Thank you for taking the time to read about and consider our short film project.
HOWL: A short film written and directed by Maureen Dunbar, produced by HappyZombie Productions. This is a school project for my film class.
The Story: HOWL is a short film/music video based off the song Howl by Florence + the Machine. (The song will not actually be used in the film). I have always been inspired by music and I have loved this song from the moment I heard it. It is an achingly beautiful song about love and loss. The line "Beware the curse that falls on young lovers/Starts so soft and sweet and turns them to hunters" is one that stuck with me and ultimately became the inspiration for the film. The film features a young woman running through the woods, alone and scared, covered in blood. You don't know who or what she's running from. Interspersed, we see little vignettes where she is meeting a young man in the forrest. They are sweethearts meeting in secret. Things start out "soft and sweet" between them, but quickly the passion grows and the young lovers become more animalistic. She wakes the next morning next to her lover, both covered in blood. She doesn't know who's it is or what happened so, frightened, she runs away. The ending is a surprise.
Rewards: We'd never ask for money without offering something awesome in return, and so we'll include our backers as much as possible in the process of making this film. If you look to the right, you'll see a bunch of different reward tiers, from $10 (every bit helps and is appreciated!) to $1,000, and rewards - everything from tshirts and signed DVDs to Associate Producer credit and a hike around the area where we are going to shoot our film and dinner with the cast and crew! One very generous donor will get a FREE short film or commercial produced by HappyZombie Productions (restrictions apply).
Why Kickstarter?: The money we receive will go towards the production of HOWL. I have a freakin' awesome crew who is willing to give up an entire weekend to help me film and I would love to provide them with a hotel room near the location instead of having them camp. I also have a very talented costumer who is making the beautiful dresses used in the film and I'd like to be able to provide her with quality materials (and maybe a little something extra for her efforts!). Also, I am a broke college student trying to start a small production company and I would like to start accumulating some nicer equipment so that I can make quality products, now and in the future.
About the Filmmaker: Writer/Director/Producer Maureen Dunbar began making music videos and short films in 2009. She has always been in love with film, television, and music but always considered filmmaking as more of a hobby, that is until recently.
While teaching third grade, Maureen would make short educational videos for her students. One night, after watching Shawn of the Dead and having a crazy zombie apocalypse dream, she decided to get her friends together and film a zombie music video. During the film shoot, one zombie could not stop smiling. When the video was uploaded onto YouTube, most of the comments were about the "smiling zombie" or the "happy zombie" and HappyZombie Productions was created.
HappyZombie Productions is a video/film production company based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We are a bunch of nerdy people who like zombies, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and being super silly. Maureen heads up the small production company with TONS of help from make-up genius/costumer/awesome assistant director Amanda Hall and cinematographer/video guru Phillip Slavin.
