Legion of Liberty: Superheroes of 1776 is an officially licensed setting book for the Savage Worlds Adventure Edition role playing game.
In Legion of Liberty, you play a young superhero who joins a group of other heroes to free the American colonies from British rule. As the Revolutionary War progresses, you develop new superpowers, such as shape change, energy weapon, elemental mastery, transmute, disguise, state shift, or weather control, and fight supervillains with powers such as puppet, hunter's path, witchsight, gift of luck, or gate. In Legion of Liberty, your actions may change the course of history, for better or worse!
Great RPG setting books have great illustrations, so great books need an art budget. Happy Monster Press is a two-person operation. Scott's background is in business and physics; Joy is a writer, with a few traditional watercolor skills and a basic grasp of Photoshop. When the Happy Monster creative team put their heads together to make a piece of custom art, the following masterpiece was the result.
Some of our friends have said, YES, DO THE WHOLE BOOK THAT WAY! (For you folks, we've added in a stretch-goal; if this project funds at $10K, we'll produce a special edition, fully illustrated by Scott and Joy, for anyone who thinks this is a good idea.) Otherwise, we'll be hiring professional artists to illustrate Legion of Liberty. For Children of the Apocalypse, our first setting book, we hired Yihyoung Li to make custom illustrations.
Paying for these images consumed Happy Monster's entire art budget, so for the rest of the Children of the Apocalypse, we had to use royalty free stock images. Happy Monster Press believes that professional illustrators should be paid pro rates for their work, which is why we're Kickstarting Legion of Liberty. With a larger art budget, we can pay illustrators like Yihyoung Li to create professional cover art and custom characters like Jacoby Barnes (the Boston Lobster Man), Philomon Smith (the Plymouth Rock Boy), and Deganawidah (the sonic Wampanoag warrior). Adventures such as the Battle of Salem, where Paul Revere (the Silver Speedster) faces off against were-porcupine Jane Goode (aka, "Mauler"), would be even more awesome with full-page illustrations. Please help us bring Legion of Liberty to full-color life with great art.
In the Americas, a tiny percentage of young people (~age 12) develop superpowers. North American Superhumans are a new resource that the European powers are fighting over; whoever rules the most colonies, and commands the most superhumans, will surely gain supremacy across all of Europe. Those superhumans loyal to the British join the Royal Superhuman Regiment (the Greycoats), whereas those siding with the resistance join the Sons of Liberty, who are conspiring to cast off the rule of King George and establish an independent government.
Plot Point Campaign
You, as a young superhuman, will fight historical battles, such as Bunker Hill and Yorktown, but your victories and defeats will affect the course of the American Revolution. The Legion of Liberty Plot Point Campaign includes traditional battles, from early conflicts in Massachusetts to the final confrontations in Virginia; however, the Plot Point Campaign includes several alternate histories the gamemaster can put into play if, for instance, the heroes win a battle that was historically lost. In these alternate histories, for example, the Continental Army might conquer Canada; or General Washington could be captured while crossing the Delaware. Legion of Liberty has been structured to maximize flexibility for the gamemaster and increase the stakes for the players.
For gamemasters wanting to go beyond the American Revolution, Legion of Liberty's new Edges, Hindrances, and Powers provide a framework for other historical or present-day low-power superheroes campaigns, all fully compatible with the new Savage Worlds Adventure Edition.
- Interact with historical figures like Washington, Hamilton, Franklin, and Sam Adams.
- Exert political influence to support the Declaration of Independence.
- Foil a secret society of superhuman villains (the Order of the Seventh Circle).
- Trounce Redcoat forces in traditional, close-quarters, black powder battles.
- Pit your superpowers against elite British superhumans (the Greycoats).
- Fight mass battles with custom rules for superhero skirmishes.
New Tools for Players and Gamemasters
- 18 new Powers (bomber, conjuration, elemental mastery, energy transformation, energy weapon, gate, gift of luck, hunter's path, immunity, implant memory, legion, mimic, nature bond, state shift, stretch, transmute, weather control, witchsight).
- 22 new Edges and Hindrances for heroes with superpowers.
- 10 Savage Tales set in the colonies, Europe, and Native American territories.
- An adventure generator for raids, battles, reconnaissance, and skullduggery in the American Revolution.

Legion of Liberty requires the Savage Worlds Adventure Edition Core Rules to play.
At the Patriot level and above, backers will receive a PDF copy of the Legion of Liberty setting book and any digital stretch goals unlocked during the Kickstarter. Backers at higher levels will receive softcover or hardcover print copies and any unlocked digital and print stretch goals.
A limited number of backers have the opportunity to be Tuckerized; non-player characters (both heroes and villains) could be named after you!*** For General(s) of the Continental Army (the highest backer level), the co-creators at Happy Monster Press will run a custom session of Legion of Liberty for you and four of your friends, using the Roll20 online platform!
All PDF and print books (other than signed copies) will be fulfilled through DriveThruRPG.
***All Tuckerizations are subject to the approval of Happy Monster Press. The Happy Monster Press Party Poopers(TM) reserve the right NOT to have a superhero called WonderFly McSuperface, because that would only be funny for ten seconds.
If funding reaches $4000, we will add two custom digital, printable Chase Decks (Wilderness and Urban). These Chase Decks add obstacles players must negotiate during escape/pursuit scenarios. For instance, after freeing Paul Revere from house arrest so he can run at super speed to alert the colonial militia that the British Are Coming, you must escape a unit of angry British Regulars. But wait! The Chase Deck says there's a cart full of Sam Adams beer kegs blocking the alley! What do you do now?
If funding reaches $5000, we will provide all of our print backers with print copies of the Chase Decks!
If funding exceeds $5000, we will add additional digital and print stretch goals.
If funding reaches $10,000, Joy and Scott will produce a special digital edition of the Legion of Liberty core book featuring all original Sharpie/watercolor art! (This is for those backers who've noticed and appreciate that the abbreviation for Legion of Liberty is LOL.)

Risks and challenges
The primary risk for Legion of Liberty is a delay in art production, which may push out the delivery date of the final product. The core content of the setting book is complete and simply needs layout and ART!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
