This is our 2nd Kickstarter campaign (see our original Kickstarter project here)... and with one successfully funded Kickstarter campaign under our belt and many lessons learned, we are excited to present our next Big Idea!
Who are We?
We are Katy and Zach- a collaborative pair of artist/musicians.
We met playing music together back in 2001 at the Governors School for Performing Arts and fell in love pretty soon after (yeah...we're high school sweethearts). Here we are now...thirteen glorious years later...and we have the pleasure of making art and music together as our profession!
We currently run a small event music and lighting business in the Cincinnati area called the Happy Couple Duo. After living most of our adulthood in Cinci, we are headed west this December to begin a new chapter in our life.
We have done a great deal of event lighting...
...but come December, our focus will shift to light as an art medium. Essentially... we will paint public spaces and objects with light!
As we travel west this winter to our new home in the Rockies, we will stop frequently along the way to create temporary light-based public art installations, which will display an interchange of light and architecture.
Imagine brilliantly lit mountains, trees, waterfalls, and pieces of architecture from the East Coast to the Rockies- beacons of light that beckon your inner voyeur and provoke a sense of adventure and renewed spirit.
For more insight on being an artist, we will let the very brilliant Jorge Luis Borges enlighten you!
Above is an example of the metamorphosis that takes place when even the simplest lighting design interacts with architecture. Imagine what we can do with more tools, the country's vast collection of amazing natural and man-made features, and your support at our disposal.
For more on this light installation- check out our blog!
The Art Artifact:
To document our journey and our light installations, we will create the following articles:
1. An Art Book featuring images of our light-based art installations titled "Traveling at the Speed of Light: A Brilliant Journey West"
2. Photos of our light installations to be printed on canvas and framed (limited number available)
3. A series of post cards and posters featuring images from our light installations - as a small memento.
We love Cincinnati and all it has done for us...
but alas...our hearts are truly in the West. For the past 8 years, our biggest dream has been to make Denver, Colorado our home (and no... this has nothing to do with the legal green). Just look at the majesty!
So, after living the majority of our adult life in Cincinnati, we are packing up everything we know and moving west this December 2014 into an exciting, yet uncertain future!
It has been another long-time dream of ours to create large public light displays. Thus, we want to use our entire journey west as a means to finally create this large body of light-based public art work. This work will serve as a narrative of our travels across the country- a story of the people we meet and the community we build across the U.S through the act of creating public art.
Further Project Details:
We will use various types of LED and DMX controllable fixtures, including washes, spots, up-lights, and abstract projections, to light any feature (man-made or natural) with architectural tendencies that we or our donors find awe-inspiring or thought-provoking.
Our lighting voyage will begin in the Chesapeake Bay Area (close to our home town) and end at the magnificent Red Rocks Amphitheater (pictured below)…UNLESS you want us to go all the way to the Pacific. We are not opposed to staying on the road until we've gone coast to coast....
To ensure that our photography work is top-notch, we are working with several of the BEST professional photographers in the tri-state area, including Natalia Bishop of Natalia Bishop Photography & Chocolate Box Photography, Amy and Aaron Hildebrand of Best Day Ever, and Nikita Gross of Nikita Gross Photography.
To any photographers out there looking to collaborate with us, we would LOVE for you to come out to our installation sites and take photos- you will get full credit for any images of yours we use. Photographers- contact us at email@example.com if you are interested in being a part of this project!!
What Your Support Means:
Although a portion of this project will be self-funded, your donation is CRUCIAL to our success and to help propel this awesome project to the next level. Instead of writing a letter to Warren Buffet, we look to you Kickstarters.... with the help of this powerful and immense community we will tell an epic tale.
Thus, we are asking you to help us plan our journey- that's right... YOU will help US plan MOST of our travels west!
Here's how it works... With each pledge, you will have the chance to drop pins on our map. Locations with the most pins will be guaranteed to have a light installation set up and photographed.
Although we will visit any place that has the most pins located between the Atlantic Ocean Coast Line and The Rocky Mountains, we do have a few must-stop places for ourselves. Check out the map below for our pre-planned stops.
Your generosity will help fund our travel expenses, camera equipment, and additional lighting necessary to working in outdoor elements, such as rain and snow (we already have a great arsenal of lighting appropriate for indoor use or "friendly" weather).
As of May 14th, 2014, our project is being sponsored by Astera Global Lighting. We will be using Astera lights exclusively for our light installations and are super pumped for this partnership!
We will of course be using part of the funding to finance the Art Books, Prints, Posters, and Post Cards we will create and give to you fine people as a thank you for your contribution.
We ask you and your friends to ban together and offer whatever you can to buy post cards, posters, Art Book, framed canvas prints, and pins to drop on our map.
...And for any of you throwing a big event (let's say a wedding), we encourage you to become one of our top sponsors and we will bring the best music and lighting to you!
While our goal enables us to purchase the proper light fixtures, make all of the rewards, and travel for three weeks, we are not limiting ourselves to that timeline. The more funding you provide, the more of you we can visit. The longer we can stay on the road, the more captivating our story will become.
If you can't spare a few dollars, please help us spread the word to as many people as possible. The interactions we will have and stories to be told from our journey is what this is truly about. We hope you can be part of it!!
Email us anytime at firstname.lastname@example.org and if you become a backer please 'comment' your location.
We can do A LOT on our own- we are a fantastic team- but we can't do it ALL and we definitely will not achieve our goal with out the support of wonderful people such as yourselves. We thank you all for taking your time to check out our Kickstarter- happy donating!!
*******Special thanks to Best Day Ever Photography for all of these wonderful and amazing shots of us! You tell our story so beautifully through your art! To get to know us a little better, visit our blog
Risks and challenges
We are lucky to have the experience of a previously funded Kickstarter project to help us better assess our potential risks and challenges and how we can tackle them should they arise. Don't worry- there aren't too many!
1. Some light installations will be executed with guerrilla tactics- meaning without permission. This of course could lead to being cited and fined for our installations or being told to take light installations down before we have the opportunity to complete them and take photos. To avoid this happening frequently, we will limit our guerrilla activity to places we have researched that seem more approving of our actions. We will also work hard to plan venues and spaces ahead of time and receive permission from as many sites as possible.
2. Life sometimes happens and equipment sometimes does you wrong! Yes, there is always potential that equipment or life malfunction could lead to a delay in production. Barring a huge catastrophe, we will make sure you have our amazing work in your hands as promised by the delivery date. As we said before- we learned a lot from our first kickstarter- so we have set our reward delivery date for July of 2015 to give us plenty of time to get everything printed and distributed. In the very minuscule chance that we will be delayed in our production, we promise to be prompt and effective communicators and let everybody know how long of a delay they will experience.
Of course we will keep all of our supporters apprised of our progress the whole way through up until the awards are produced and ready to be distributed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
