SmuggleCraft is a quest-based hovercraft racing game with randomly generated tracks and a branching narrative.
From the very beginning, we knew we wanted to make a top-notch racing game. The exhilaration and intensity when playing racing games are unparalleled, especially when playing next to your opponents. So we studied our favorite parts from our favorite racing games and boosted it up a notch to give you SmuggleCraft. We want it to be as engaging, beautiful, and aesthetically marvelous as possible. Gameplay reminiscent of the best parts of Wipeout, Crazy Taxi, and Pod Racing while inviting you into a rich action/adventure narrative. Fast and customizable hovercrafts, a new and beautiful world, and an immersive narrative with lasting consequences.
Branching Narrative - Become the most famous, or infamous, Smuggler in Dirahl. Use your hovercraft to smuggle contraband, evade the authorities, and take offensive measures against other smugglers. Discover new upgrades and build the most powerful hovercraft on the planet.
Accept Smuggling contracts from the many inhabitants of Dirahl - some legal, some not so much. The contracts you accept will effect your reputation. Choosing to follow through with your word or stealing the cargo for yourself will effect your rep as well.

A Beautiful, Evolving Environment - The unique world of SmuggleCraft is packed with life and personality. Explore the great terrain of Dirahl and interact with its many inhabitants to improve your reputation as a Smuggler. Every track you traverse is randomly generated, and with over 160 different track pieces, no two races are ever the same. Races become more about skill and adaptation, rather than track memorization.
Easy to Learn, yet Difficult to Master - SmuggleCraft is an homage to old school racing games, merged with modern mechanics and gameplay. SmuggleCraft is a RogueLite, meaning your death will result in starting over at the beginning of the narrative, but your Hovercraft's upgrade and progress will still be there. Master unfamiliar terrain and the maneuvers of a pro Smuggler to prove you are a force to be reckoned with.

Your Hovercraft - A smuggler is nothing without their Hovercraft. Composed of an Engine, Body, Cockpit, Nose, and Stabilizers, your Hovercraft is your tool, weapon, and life. As you progress as a Smuggler, you will discover different parts to upgrade your hovercraft with. With each new part comes new stats, increasing or decreasing your hovercraft's Aerodynamics, Stealth, Thrust, Acceleration, Shields, and Handling. Craft and customize your Hovercraft to suit your smuggler playstyle.
Shields - The terrain of Dirahl is unforgiving. All Hovercrafts are equipped with shields to add durability. However, shields deplete if your hovercraft clashes with mines, caltrops, or other hovercrafts when traversing at high speeds. Dirahl and its smugglers can be dangerous, so shields are a must.
Boost Orbs - Unfortunately, hovercrafts consume an immense amount of energy. Drive through Boost Orbs to refuel your hovercraft's engine. Not reaching a boost orb before your fuel reaches zero will leave you stranded in the Dirahl Sideways (roads in which the Smugglers traverse). Trust us, you don’t want that to happen.
- Drift Boost - Every Smuggler’s secret weapon. Drift Boosts gives your hovercraft a short thrust, something that takes a bit of practice at the get-go -- this will prove the Smugglers from the Sunday drivers.

The game is currently in Early Beta phase. The core mechanics and loops are built and playable, and we have been greenlit on Steam and cleared for a PlayStation Store release. The main story line and its many endings are outlined, but the Final Act has yet to be implemented in game.
The larger task ahead is the online multiplayer. We are aiming for 16-player max online race mode, and we aren't moving away from that goal. This includes online hovercraft customization and matchmaking lobbies (both private and public).
$20,000 Stretch Goal - We will update the game with new single player AND multiplayer game modes FREE after launch!
$27,000 Stretch Goal - We will make the world of SmuggleCraft more alive by adding cutscenes. Happy Badger Studio is a small team, so reaching said stretch goal will let us find outside help to aid us in making SmuggleCraft as amazing as possible.
$30,000 Stretch Goal - Smuggler's Stash DLC will be made available, bringing even more upgrades for your Hovercrafts!
- $35,000 Stretch Goal - We will implement the Track Editor. This will allow players to build their own tracks using any of the 160+ pieces in the game, with more to come in future DLC!
Since we began development for SmuggleCraft, it has swiftly spun into a much larger world and gaming experience that needs the help of the community in order for it to thrive.
We aren't searching for a lot, we're searching for enough to get the game to the state we've envisioned since Day One: A unique and exhilarating hovercraft racing experience with an immersive world and captivating narrative.
To complete this game by Spring 2017 will take immense time and focus. The initial goal will grant us just that. The higher stretch goals will allow for the fully realized version of SmuggleCraft.
Paying Outside Help - SmuggleCraft has been a work of love and passion for Happy Badger Studio, but we have reached out to other talented artists to help bring our game to life. Reaching our goals will help compensate the amazing artists who've helped us on this journey.
Company and Operations Cost - Happy Badger Studio is a small independent studio located in St. Louis, MO. Our team dedicates themselves to making this game as fun and as clean as possible, and we wish to continue making games long after the release of SmuggleCraft.

Risks and challenges
The Kickstarter could fail. We have put too much love, dedication, and hard work into this project to not let it happen. A failed Kickstarter means heavily reduced funds for SmuggleCraft, and Happy Badger Studio may need to go into hibernation. This would result in a SmuggleCraft game that wouldn't meet the full vision we have originally intended, and Happy Badger Studio closing its doors.
Game development is a risky business, even more so as an indie developer. After almost two years of hard work and development, we decided that it is now time to give our passion project its final push. Our aim is to make this the best game possible and your help is needed to help us reach our goal.
The genre and core loop of the game is racing, which is not the most popular genre of gaming. The top racing games, such as Forza, Need for Speed, or Mario Kart, tend to do below average when compared to the other top titles on the market in terms of sales. Since SmuggleCraft takes the racing genre a step further by giving the world and your races meaning, other than just "Finish in 1st place", we hope to change the way players see racing games and revive an underdog genre.
Happy Badger Studio is an Indie Game Studio and sister studio to Rampant Interactive. Our team is composed of dedicated and hard working artists, programmers, and gamers. The founders of Happy Badger Studio also founded Mauhaus, a cat cafe and lounge, located in St. Louis, MO.
