You, as the Ascendant, suddenly manifest in a world populated by raging fanatics, devout zealots, and wild beasts, furious at your arrival into their plane. You are a challenge to the rule of the older, tyrannical gods, and they will stop at nothing to eliminate you. The world has succumbed to their might and you must travel through the land gaining strength, enhancing your abilities, and gathering an army of followers to oppose their reign.

What is Ascendant?

Ascendant is a 2.5D side-scroller that combines the depth and randomness of roguelikes, and the fast-paced action of beat 'em ups. The game is being developed for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

The inspiration for Ascendant came from the countless hours we’ve spent playing other roguelikes and brawlers over the years. We have taken a number of lessons from these experiences and are shaping them to form our own version of a roguelike-brawler. We knew, with our large art support, that we wanted something visually stunning, while our love for exciting, engaging beat ‘em up mechanics would drive us to create strong, unique gameplay.

As such, the Ascendant dev team has been hard at work pushing through development but we need your help to get it into your hands.

Ascendant is very much a brawler at heart. You will constantly be in the middle of combat as you progress through the game, bashing your way through the throngs of fervent zealots, rabid beasts, and indomitable bosses. Additionally, the game takes a lot of features from one of our favorite genres – roguelikes – and puts them to good use. Permadeath, character enhancement, random drops, dynamically assembled content; these things and more are featured in Ascendant.

  • Brawler Combat – Martial weapons are the primary way that the Ascendant dispatches enemies. You will be able to perform ground and air combos to slice your way through the frenzied hordes of beasts and fanatics. Additionally, enemies can be launched into the air using a chargeable power attack which can then be followed up by juggling with more air combos and ranged spells.  
  • Aspects of the Gods – Aspects are part of a socket system that actively enhances a player's weapon, spell, or armor. Each aspect has their own unique characteristics and placing them into different sockets will yield varying effects. For example, an ice-based Aspect on a weapon would freeze enemies that are launched into the air while the same Aspect socketed into the Ascendant’s armor would allow for a slow-fall effect to be activated during descent.  
  • Dynamic Spells – The instability of magic in the world means that spells the Ascendant picks up can be wildly different from each other. Spells are generated from a set of specific archetypes – boomerang, bounce shot, and shrapnel blast for example – but their properties such as damage, mana cost, and lifetime are separated into tiers which determine their quality.
  • Followers – The Ascendant will be able to convert his enemies into allies through the Followers system. When you perform combos well, have collected enough influence, there is a chance that the enemies will be in complete awe of your fighting prowess and commit to your cause. You will then have a choice; to take these former enemies on as Followers, to fight and die for you or to sacrifice them for more influence.  

 Challenge Mode - Challenge mode will allow players to select and add modifiers to the game which in turn would drastically increase (or in some cases decrease) the difficulty and change the experience. One example could be removing chests from the game, or spawning explosive barrels instead of breakable pots, or even replacing all ground-based enemies with flying types. The possibilities are endless!    

New Unlockable Characters - If this goal is achieved we will add three brand new playable characters to the game. Each character will have distinct features, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses just as the current roster of characters also have.  

Follower Co-op - With this stretch goal players have the opportunity to command a group of Followers instead of an Ascendant in the game's local co-op. Order minions to obliterate their former brethren or guard your ally in this mode.

  • Multiple unlockable characters with different strengths and weaknesses to suit any playstyle
  • Random special events keep the gameplay fresh each playthrough. You will never know what to expect in the next room
  • Dozens of weapons, items, and trinkets to wield each with unique characteristics allowing you to adjust and adapt to the swarm of foes attempting to stop you  
  • Dynamically constructed environments means that the structure of every level will consist of randomly assembled rooms. Each level places the boss, treasure, and arenas differently so you will always be rewarded for exploring the depths of the world
  • Enemy variations will invariably keep you on your toes. Core enemies have a large number of variants with very different mechanics associated with them allowing every enemy encounter to be exciting and challenging.
  • Ascendant's source of currency is Influence. Influence is used to purchase items from shops and also determines how many Followers a player can have. Influence can be gained by discovering sources within the environment or by slaying enemies.

The reason we are reaching out for funding is so that we can guarantee the release of the game. A successful campaign here would directly pay for the handful of software and music licenses that we need to legally publish the game.

Any additional funding we receive would go towards securing the team and ensuring that we can continue to work on polishing and improving Ascendant.

Sword of Fortuna

The Sword of Fortuna is a mid-tier weapon with randomized stat points associated with all of its attributes. Most of the times this weapon will be amazing and have very interesting combinations. Other times it could be not as great but still fun to wield. The name that you give us will be placed within a pool of other names such that when a player picks up this item, one of those names will appear as the creator of this mighty weapon.

Our artists are very talented and will use their skill to meticulously detail a customized Xbox Controller for PC just for you! You will be able to pick one of the five designs shown below. Hapa Games consists of a small group of very eager graduate students from the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy at UCF. 

Ascendant began as an idea that we started talking about while we were finishing our final projects at school. We started with sketches and simple ideas on notepads and we all knew that this game would be something we wanted to play. It would be something that we would want other people to play and enjoy too.

So we came together in our last semester and were graciously allowed to use an incubator space to develop our idea and our company. Everything you see here is the culmination of us trying to realize our dream of becoming independent games developers.

As it is with any new indie game project there will always be an inherent risk associated with production and development. However, all of our time is focused on making Ascendant as great of a game as we know it can be. This game is a balancing act between implementing features, artistic challenges, and time, but we get closer and closer to hitting that sweet spot every day.

Any setbacks and problems that occur are solvable with the right attitude and honest feedback. We the Hapa Games dev team, want this project to be a success and we constantly remind ourselves what is within scope and what is not. We distinguish which features we should keep and which are too outlandish to attempt. Our goal is to release and to release soon so by dedicating our time to the core features we can really hone in on creating compelling gameplay. To supplement this we conduct consistent playtests with students and other developers to help validate our decisions on which features to implement and how stylized to be with the art. Regular playtesting also ensures that our game is not hard for the novice to pick up and also permits challenging experiences for brawler and roguelike veterans.

We know that we are just a small studio but our ambition, drive, and dedication to create a successful product and put it to market makes up for this fact. We hope that you will see that in us and back Ascendant today!
