HAPA celebrates its 32nd anniversary in the studio this summer with an award-winning team of Haku Mele Song Writers, Producers, Engineers, and the newest member of the group, Kapono Nā‘ili‘ili, to craft our next album; sure to be an instant classic! The group honors your love, and humbly asks for your support in a grass-roots effort to fund a thoughtful, professionally produced album in a proper studio environment, as well as a dynamic Live Performance shoot for Video On Demand/DVD release.
It's become a challenge for elite musicians to go the extra mile with the recording process; the business model has shifted, costs have risen, and the market for recorded music is diminished. Expenses for a truly professional recording can easily exceed 100k, and record companies no longer advance these expenses. Dedicated artists such as HAPA overcome these obstacles in collaboration with their loyal audience through Kickstarter, a powerful and essential force in music today. Your contributions and actions to spread the word will help perpetuate and innovate Hawaiian music, and may lead to another award-winning release!
Make possible a Live Performance DVD & Soundtrack!
With the success of our Kickstarter campaign we plan to shoot and record a Live Performance for DVD & Video On Demand to feature the new music, along with beloved classics such as Lei Pikake, Olinda Road, and Mãnoa, In The Rain!

Much of the music planned for the new release is part of the bigger picture -- a brand new show Barry has developed over the last eight years. An “Enhanced HAPA Concert Experience” with a cast of fifty-five, including a Symphony String Section and Dancers from around the globe. This “really big show” has been presented four times in the last five years; twice in Japan and twice in LA at The Redondo Center For The Performing Arts and is being presented again this year on October 10, 2015. Here is a short promotional video of the show:
An ambitious work featuring a touring troupe of the finest Dancers, Musicians and a Creative Production Team designed to tour the mainland and the world, and further export Hawaiian culture. Funds raised through our Kickstarter campaign will also facilitate this greater effort -- and with your support, together we will perpetuate and innovate Hawaiian music.
"Hawaii's hottest group!" --Billboard Magazine
Like the islands themselves, HAPA's music is an amalgam of influences ranging from ancient Polynesian rhythms and genealogical chants to the strummed ballads of Portuguese fisherman and Mexican cowboys, and the inspired melodies and harmonies of the traditional church choirs of the early missionaries. Add a dose of American acoustic folk/rock, and you have what has been described as the “most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawaiian music the world knows!” (Maui Times)
The benchmark self-entitled first recording in 1993 still remains the number one selling recording by a group or duo in the history of recorded Hawaiian music; and it swept all six categories for which it was nominated at the 1994 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, the Hawaiian equivalent of the Grammy’s. Many CDs and awards later, the group would again sweep the major categories with the 2006 release of MAUI.
"HAPA is the most successful Hawaiian music group in recent history” --New York Times
The HAPA name reflects the diverse backgrounds of its musicians and the mix of cultures that converge in Hawai‘i. Brilliant guitarist Barry Flanagan has been the guiding force of HAPA since its beginnings in 1983. He is joined by Kapono Nā‘ili‘ili -- singer, Hawaiian chanter, multi- instrumentalist, hula dancer -- who matches Barry’s embrace of many musical genres.
A prolific composer and performer, and one of Hawai’i’s most respected and celebrated recording artists and producers, Barry has composed some of Hawaii’s most popular songs of the last three decades. In 1994, the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts honored Flanagan, and Hawaiian Language Professor S.H. Kiope Raymond, with the prestigious “Haku Mele” award, an acknowledgement for Excellence in the Art of Song composition in the Native Hawaiian Language. In 2004, Flanagan co-composed a song with friend Kenny Loggins for his Grammy-nominated release More Songs from Pooh Corner. The song, entitled Hana Aluna Lullaby includes a chorus in the Hawaiian language, the first song utilizing Hawaiian lyrics to receive that distinction.
These ingredients come together musically to evoke the unique flavor of the Pacific, of Hawai‘i, and of the HAPA sound: “beautiful, fragile, spiritual, powerful...” -L.A. Times
The newest addition to the group, Kapono Nā‘ili‘ili is known for his beautiful vocals and his mastery of a multitude of instruments, and has performed extensively in both Hawaiian and Contemporary music. A graduate of the University of Hawaii with a B.A. in Hawaiian Language, he is a chanter and hula dancer, and won Maui’s prestigious Richard Ho‘opi‘i Falsetto Contest in 2007. He is equally as comfortable playing R&B, Jazz, Soul, Gospel, and Pop as he is with traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music.

Risks and challenges
The group plans to fulfill many of the incentives in April and May. House-concerts, dinners and sightseeing, along with SKYPE sessions can be discussed and scheduled at that time to identify mutually convenient dates. The Live Performance DVD is in the planning stages, and the Redondo Beach concert is on October 10, 2015. The recording sessions are expected to run through the summer, with completion of the new album in late fall.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
