As we countdown to our last 6 days, we are offering a new reward in collaboration with Victor+Alexander!
T H E S T O R Y
From behind the shadows of their bedroom door, two Taiwanese brothers, Wang Hao (7) and Wang Po (10) witness a violent confrontation between their feuding parents one night. The verbal exchange escalates into physical violence, as their father, Wang Wen-Te, sends their mother, Wang Kuei-Chi, crashing down onto their living room floor. As Wang Wen-Te storms out the house, Wang Kuei-Chi takes the opportunity for her and her boys to escape their abusive patriarch. The boys are awakened to the hope of beginning the next chapter of their lives in the United States led by their mother.
N O T E F R O M T H E A U T H O R
This short film is based on the true story of my family’s move from Taipei, Taiwan to the United States. It is dedicated to my family and also acts as a reflection of my family, overcoming many obstacles to be where we are today. My parents divorced when I was five years old, and even though my mother, brother, and I had to leave behind the lives we knew, I understood as a child, that my mother’s decision to relocate to the United States was for the best.
I remember my older brother and I were hiding in the corner of our living room in Taipei, watching the biggest argument happen, right in front of our eyes. My father was part of the Republic of China Army, so he would only be home once a week. Whenever he was home, an argument would ensue. During the heat of the fight, my father broke our favorite household items, including our huge cylindrical aquarium (which he shattered with a baseball bat), our guitar, and our radio. The radio was our favorite, we listened to it every morning before school as we got ready for the day. After my mother had enough and filed for divorce, she became everything to me and my brother. In February 2001, my mother, brother, and I came to the United States not knowing any English. We had boarded the plane in Taipei, where the temperature was nearly one hundred degrees; however, when we arrived in the U.S. twenty-one hours later, we were welcomed by a snowy, frigid runway in Detroit, Michigan. The weather that day was just as foreign as the United States was, compared to the culture I had left. During the flight, my brother and I chose easy nicknames from American pop culture; I selected “Jerry” from Tom and Jerry and my brother, Po-Chen, selected “Kevin” from the movie Home Alone. When we arrived, I was clueless about everything, from reading signs to understanding the flight attendant’s instructions. Upon arrival, our aunt was there with open arms to guide us through the next chapter of our lives.
I want this film to convey the idea that any single mother will do whatever she has to, in order to provide the best for her children, even if it means leaving everything behind. I also want this film to focus on the relationship between a mother and her sons, while emphasizing the feelings of fear over starting a new chapter in one’s life. My target audience includes immigrants that have come to America, as well as any family that has dealt with divorce.
