About this project
Missed our Kickstarter campaign?
Unicorn Coats can now be found at GrizCoat.com
tl;dr As a part of Kickstarter Gold, we're back with our fifth Kickstarter project: a Unicorn Coat. Yes, a freakin' unicorn! Why? Because no one ever said the world had too much magic. And since we'll be custom-making each one of these coats, you get to make your own magic.
2012: Griz Coat CHANGES. THE. WORLD.
Pretty much everyone remembers exactly where they were the moment Griz Coat launched on Kickstarter in 2012. Right? Right? Anyone? OK, whatever. Trust us, it was a universally-momentous occasion.
Just to recap, we made some coats that looked like bears, and a bunch of downright-amazing folks on Kickstarter took the risk on a couple twins who had exactly no idea what they were doing. Much to our own surprise, we figured it out and delivered the goods (on-time-ish)!
2013: Panda, panda, panda, panda
A bunch of our original backers had asked us for it, so in 2013 we came back to Kickstarter with a Panda Coat. Another fun and pretty popular project for us!
2014: maybe we got a little too creative
Riding that massive winning streak (of two!), we got our creative juices flowing in 2014 and launched an ingenious new product that no one had even thought to ask for: a Griz Rug! We thought it was awesome, but it was greeted with a collective yawn. OK, lesson learned: just listen to the people. Our backers did get their rugs, but the Griz Rug is, sadly, no more. RIP.
2015: we enter the unicorn biz
Totally unrelated but still sorta-related, we revived the world's most beloved '80s brand of ski gloves called Freezy Freakies in 2015. And that's technically "sorta-related" because...just look at those UNICORNS!!! (yeah, we know they're technically "pegacorns")
We continued our streak of doing one Kickstarter project a year by...wait, we didn't actually do one in 2016. Moving on...
Since a few folks were asking for it, we're now back with a Unicorn Coat to celebrate this Kickstarter Gold campaign! We're taking what we know from our 2012 Griz Coat project and all that "in-house design expertise we've developed" (pretty sure that's the right industry-speak), and we're just dialing up the magic and dialing down the fierce. Behold:
We know there are other unicorn suits and onesies and hoodies and jackets and tees and masks and stuff. And we know they only cost like $30 and are churned out in the tens of thousands by the unicorn factory in China. Those products are great too; after all, unicorns are unicorns! But we always try to make our coats as visually-striking as possible, using components designed by taxidermists (yeah, our taxidermy guy can even make unicorn parts...he's that good), and featuring the softest faux fur we can find. And while we try to make sure our coats look great, it's a total requirement that they're also comfortable to wear for hours, can easily be put on/taken off, last for years, and fit a broad range of body types and head sizes. And we do our patriotic duty and build these things right here in the USA!
Each Unicorn Coat will be custom-made
This time around, we wanted to give backers a chance to really make this coat their own. There's a chance you'll be the only one to get your exact version of the coat.
1) Choose your horn
First, you get to pick your horn color. We partnered with the world's leading purveyor of Unicorn Horns, Brooklyn Owl. They hand-make their top-quality horns in Brooklyn, NY. Ain't that something?! Matter of fact, if all you want is one of these horns and you could care less about our coat, you should just head to their website and pick one up. Backers get their choice of 4 horn colors: rainbow, white, gold and fuchsia.
2) Choose your eye color
Two eye colors: Blue or Pink? Blue or Pink? Blue or Pink?
3) Choose your size
We offer two adult sizes:
- Smaller: for people 5'0" to 5'8" (152-173cm)
- Larger: for people 5'6" to 6'3" (168-191cm)
(Sorry kiddos, no sizes for you. You've already got plenty of unicorn gear available.)
Added bonus: you get a rainbow tail!
This will be the first tail we've ever put on a coat. Repeat after me: "milestone".
- Faux fur: ultra soft, incredibly-realistic fabric (white: 92% acrylic, 8% polyester; rainbow: 80% acrylic, 20% polyester)
- Unicorn head-hood: shockingly lightweight, with a comfortable fabric-lined, soft foam interior; plus, the hood is detachable, in case you need to wear it in a more formal setting
- Eyes, teeth, hooves and ears: totally faux, but with a striking resemblance to the real-deal
- Reinforced over-stitching: double the strength, double the fun
- Lining-free coat: extensive market research has revealed that lining just plain made our coats way too hot to wear, so we've removed it and now let the soft fabric backing wick away moisture and allow the coat to breathe. Trust us, it's much better this way.
- Definitely not intended for children under 13 years old. Our apologies for that, but the kids are already so well-covered when it comes to unicorn gear. This one's for the big people.
- Care: Professionally dry clean only; remove the head before cleaning
- Made in the USA of US and imported parts

Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is that you don't like the coat! Because that would make us sad unicorns. And we're not even sure unicorns can be sad, so that would be quite something.
Another risk is that we don't deliver your coat to you on-time, and you don't have it for some critical event. Seasoned Kickstarter backers, you almost certainly know about that risk. Our track record in this regard is actually something we're really proud of, and something we take very seriously. We've delivered the rewards for all 4 of our campaigns either on-time or with only a one-month delay. That's 4 projects with lots of reward tiers, and the worst we've done is been a month late. Not too bad. But the risk remains...Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
