A watch designed to last a lifetime. Nanok by Hamtun Watches

£40,926

For more than 50 years, the full day-date has been the ultimate high-end watch design. Worn by heads of state and royalty around the world, it's become synonymous with quality and style.

Unfortunately, that reputation comes with a hefty price tag. A day-date with a Swiss automatic movement is simply out of reach for the majority of us. Until now.

We're Hamtun Watches and since 2015 we’ve been designing modern, high-quality watches that people can actually afford. This is our 3rd Kickstarter (and our 4th pre-order campaign overall) and the Nanok is the culmination of all of that experience in one stunning watch.

By combining classic, time-tested Swiss technology with subtle modern design touches, we've built a watch that is immediately recognisable yet also completely new.

Some people like to wear a different watch every day, and we get that. There are so many beautiful ones out there! But we're romantics for a time when people owned a single watch for their whole life, and the Nanok is our vision of that watch. A combination of classic Swiss technology and modern styling, it's designed for a lifetime on your wrist.

At Hamtun we make watches that we want to own. Our designs are lead by instinct and passion, not market research and spreadsheets. You’ll see lots of different styles in our catalogue because we build what excites us.

Since day one the goal has been to build a diverse range of watches so that we'd never wake up and be tempted to wear a watch that we didn't make. With the Nanok we've taken a giant leap towards achieving that.

Final clasp may differ slightly but will offer the same functionality

Part of building a watch for all situations is making sure that it's not too thick. If a watch can't fit under a shirt cuff, it's not an everyday watch for lots of people! We focussed on this, and the Nanok comes in at just 10.6mm thick. Despite the additional functionality of the day & date movement, it's the thinnest watch we've ever made.

Like most high-end watches, the Nanok has a 316L stainless steel case and a sapphire crystal (which is flat with internal anti-reflective coatings) making it incredibly tough, while the screw-down crown ensures it's water resistant to 100 metres/10ATM. You can swim with your watch without worrying.

Despite all of that toughness, Nanok weighs in at just 66g on the leather strap and 138g on the bracelet. You'll hardly notice it's there! And if it gets a bit dark, the genuine Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9 lume will keep your watch visible long into the night.

The Nanok features a Swiss made Sellita SW 240-1. It's a well known and time-tested movement that will be easy to maintain and service for years to come.

The SW 240-1 is an automatic movement with a high 28,800 bpm beat rate, resulting in the super smooth second hand sweep that defines high-end watches. As it's automatic you'll never need a battery, just wearing it will keep it running.

It features 26 jewels. Jewels are used in movements to avoid having metal parts rubbing together. It prevents wear and extends the life between services.

Importantly, it is made by Sellita. Sellita is a long-established Swiss company whose movements appear in the watches of some of the biggest and most famous watch brands in the world. This is a serious movement for a serious watch.

If you own a watch that you love you probably wear it a lot, so you'll know that over time it'll start to look a bit worn. No matter how careful you are with it, it's inevitable that marks and hairline scratches will start to appear.

What if we could do something about that? Well now we can!

Thanks to recent advances in the technology we can now add a scratch resistant coating to the outside of 316L stainless steel watches and so reduce the risk of marking or damaging the metal over time. Until recently this was only an option on watches at a vastly higher price.

If you decide to have your watch treated it will be far more resistant to scratches and marks, and so should stay new looking for far longer.

That's not to say we can make the watch completely scratch proof (it's not magic), but you'll find that your Nanok will be far less susceptible to the signs of wear that are associated with standard, untreated watches.

How does it work?

We apply a tiny coating to the outside of the watch (and bracelet if you order one). At about 3.0 microns thick, it's basically invisible. You'll notice a very slight change in the colour of the metal when compared directly with an uncoated watch, but that's it. Once the coating is added, the hardness rating of the outside of the watch goes up from about 225HV (the hardness rating of standard 316L stainless steel) to 900-1100HV.

What does that actually mean? Well Corning® Gorilla® Glass 6 (the latest version of the stuff most smartphones use) has a rating of around 680HV, while sapphire crystal has a rating of somewhere over 2000HV. So the coating on your watch case will be somewhere between the two, and many times harder than standard 316L stainless steel.

What does the hardening cost?

The hardening process costs an extra £40 on top of the price of your watch. When you order your Nanok just add an extra £40 to your pledge, we'll be in touch at the end of the campaign to confirm your choice.

Why an option rather than a default?

The coating process costs more and it takes a bit more time. We don't want to raise the price and increase the lead time for people that aren't interested in the additional long-term protection. It'll take around a month longer to deliver your Nanok if you go for this option, but the result will be a watch tougher than any made from standard 316L steel.

We're offering three strap options for the Nanok so that you can make it work for you from day one. We'll also be making further options available via our store in the future so that Nanok continues to adapt to your style. Or, of course, you can pick up a strap from your retailer of choice, there is nothing proprietary about our straps.

1) Pick one from our choice of two genuine leather straps, included in the base price. Available in grey or black and handmade from vegetable tanned leather, these straps are the best we've found at any price point. Comfortable, soft and light, the leather strap can dress up or down easily depending on your day.

Our grey (left) & black (right) leather straps
Our grey (left) & black (right) leather straps

2) A 316L stainless steel H-link bracelet with ratcheting clasp, available for an extra £30. H-link bracelets hold their shape really well, resulting in a solid, high-quality feel. Ratcheting clasps help ensure that whatever the size of your wrist, you can adjust the bracelet perfectly. The bracelet features all solid links, of course, and tapers from 20mm at the lugs to 18mm at the clasp.

If you'd like both a leather strap and the bracelet that's fine, just add £35 to your pledge.

If you're new to Kickstarter, pledging can be a little confusing. Here are a few scenarios which will hopefully make it clear.

You just want a Nanok watch on a leather strap

Pick the cheapest pledge level available, then pick your country. The final price will be shown. Checkout.

You want a Nanok watch with a leather strap and the bracelet

Pick the cheapest pledge level available, then pick your country. The price will update to include shipping. Manually add £35 to the price shown to get both the bracelet and leather strap. Checkout.

You want a Nanok watch with the bracelet and a hat

Pick the cheapest pledge level available, then pick your country. The price will update to include shipping. Manually add £30 to the price shown to get the bracelet and another £20 for the hat. Checkout.

If anything is unclear, back the project at the lowest possible price and then ask for help in the discussion section. Anyone that has backed the project can comment. Remember you won't be charged until the project ends and has reached its goal of £20,000, and you can cancel or change your pledge right up until that moment.

Sometimes it's fun to see the path to a product, right? Most companies keep the stuff that didn't make it hidden, but to us, that's part of the story.

Nanok design started in mid 2017, with the only requirement being a day & date movement. We didn't know which one or any details of the rest of the watch.

We looked at multiple options for movement manufacturer and day/date positioning. We quickly rejected a truncated day at the 3 position in favour of a full day at 12. We then played around with case, dial and hand designs until we had something we were happy with.

Early on there were a few miscommunications! The odd dial pattern and blue hands were the result of a translation issue on the lume and sunburst dial. They are long gone, but the case shape has changed little since our first renders, with the only significant difference being the crown shape.

The biggest issue though was that the day window was cut in slightly too far away from the edge of the dial. As a result, the 1 and 11 markers had to be cut too short and the day window felt a bit like it was floating in the middle of the dial. It needed to be closer to the edge!

The movement size is obviously fixed, so we re-worked the case and bezel to slightly decrease the space and fix both of these problems.

This is very close to the first prototype we actually made. We're considering this dial (with the date moved to 6) as a stretch goal because we still think this one works. This handset was abandoned before we began prototyping.

A darker sunburst dial that almost made it to production but was eventually replaced with the matte black dial you see today. Something about the dark sunburst dial just didn't work, and didn't feel like a Hamtun watch.

The final dial with date moved to 6, a matte black finish, a blue contrast added in a few places, and our final handset.

As you can see, the design we've released isn't where the Nanok started. The case, dial, handset and crown have all been changed or re-thought during development.

Early concepts just didn't feel like a Hamtun Watches design and didn't really come together as we wanted. It's important to us to stay true to ourselves and build watches we want to wear, so we went back to the drawing board. The watch you see here today is the result of that determination to build watches we love, not just watches we think we can sell.

Creator

Hi, I'm Ross Davis and in 2015 I founded Hamtun Watches. Now, 3 years later, I still lead all of our projects but I now have a few people helping me. As the business grows it becomes less and less practical to try to do everything myself.

Before I started Hamtun I spent 10 years in software, product management and operational positions working for software businesses based in London. I left London with my family after our second child was born, looking for a slightly less hectic life on the south coast of the UK. I now live with my wife and our 3 children in Southampton.

You can find me on Twitter as @rssdvs and Instagram as rssdvs

We have recently started a Hamtun Discord channel as well. This channel will be a permanent part of our community, allowing you to talk directly with our support team if you have any questions about your watch, as well as chat with other Hamtun customers about watches or life in general!

Join now, it's free and instant. Discord apps are available to download for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows PCs. Never heard of Discord? It's a hosted chat platform used by lots of groups and communities. Read a a bit about it.

Thanks

A huge amount of work has gone into building the Nanok, both at our end and at our brilliant manufacturing partners who are helping us build something really special.

Over the years we've built amazing relationships with many of our backers and we are genuinely so grateful at the support and love that has been shown for us and our watches. The low early pricing on this watch is our way of saying thanks so much for the support so far. We've got big plans for the future, we hope you'll be a part of them.

FAQs

  • Where do the watches ship from?

All of our watches ship from the UK. We don't know if you'll have to pay import duties if you're outside the UK - check with your local tax office.

  • Where do you ship to?

We ship to any country in the world except: Saudi Arabia, Kosovo, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, North Korea, and Yemen. Nothing personal, it's just really hard to ship to those countries.

  • Which courier company do you use?

All our products ship through Royal Mail in the UK. We use a "tracked and signed for" service for all countries it's available for, and a "signed for" service for all the rest. We can not use different couriers on a one-off basis, even with extra payment. Our system relies on us shipping fast without having to handle some shipments differently to others.

  • How much does shipping cost?

Shipping for watches is £10 within the EU or £15 for the rest of the world.

  • Can you declare a different price on the shipment?

No. We are often asked to declare a lower price on the shipment or ship in multiple packages to help avoid taxes. That is fraud and we'd put ourselves at legal risk. The price declared on the shipment will be the value you paid for the goods we are shipping. If you place one order your goods will be shipped in one order. If you place multiple separate orders they will be shipped as separate orders.

  • Why "Hamtun" and what does "Nanok" mean?

Hamtun is an ancient name for the settlement that eventually became our home city of Southampton, UK. The city is famous in the UK for being the home to Supermarine, a (now defunct) manufacturer of planes and seaplanes. They are most famous for the Spitfire, but the Nanok was also one of theirs. We try to find names that mean something to the area.

  • Are the dimensions 100% accurate?

The sizes and weights detailed here are accurate for our prototypes. When we move to production we will use slightly different manufacturing methods which could result in slight variations. Nothing significant, we will be using the same technical drawings, but you could find a fraction of a mm or a few grammes difference between these samples and the production models.

  • What fallback do you have in place in case a supplier lets you down?

We have multiple suppliers lined up for cases and bracelets. We will work with our usual factory by default, but if there is a problem we have already built a prototype with a fallback supplier who can take over.

We will source our movements from Sellita, but we have built a prototype with an equivalent movement from STP as well. Sellita is a big, well-known movement supplier and has a good relationship with our assembly factory. If you know Swiss movements you'll probably have heard of them.

Having a backup plan makes sense, but having to execute it would delay delivery. The chance of Sellita or our default manufacturing partners letting us down is tiny, we know and trust them. The backup plan exists because it's good practice, not because we expect to need to execute it.

  • What warranty do you offer?

All Hamtun watches come with a 2 year warranty covering manufacturing defects. What does that really mean? If your watch fails because it's faulty, we'll fix or replace it. If you drop it, damage it, break it through misuse or lose it, it's on you. We'll be fair, we expect you to be as well.

Risks and challenges

At Hamtun Watches we ran our first campaign in 2016. This is our third Kickstarter campaign and our fourth pre-order campaign overall. All watches from our previous campaigns have been delivered and well recieved.

We have great ongoing relationships with our suppliers and have received high-quality samples. Photos of those samples have been shared here.

We have built in some slack to our advertised delivery date to cover potential delays importing the goods through customs or any other unforeseen circumstances. We are confident we can deliver on schedule and to a high standard.

From day one we will be active in the comments and we will keep backers updated. We're always active on social media so we are easy to get hold of if you ever have questions about your pledge or the project.
