About

Keeping the rules simple and flexible.
Keeping the rules simple and flexible.

The Pitch

Hammered is a tile based drinking game where you build a dungeon maze, collect treasure, and drink to defeat monsters. The game is printed on pulpboard coasters, much like what you would find at most bars. Hammered is intended for bar distribution, as well as a home version. The bar version will be printed on thin pulpboard coasters, so they can be distributed cheaply and in large quantities. The home version will be of slightly thicker grade, but the tiles will be interchangeable with tiles you might pick up at a bar.

Early playtesting sessions were met with so much positive enthusiasm, it was easy to see that we had a winning concept on our hands.

What Sets Us Apart?

Simplicity. One thing I have noticed about of a lot of card based RPG drinking games is that they lack simplicity. Complex rules are not something that should be part of any drinking game. It should be easy to pick up, intuitive to understand and play. What Hammered has that sets it apart is not only our dedication to making the game simple and fun, but also our distinctive play style where you create a map on the table as the core element of the game. We don't worry about hit points and card modifiers. It's just simple, straightforward, and most of all fun.

The game is also flexible and expandable. You can add more cards or swap out cards, much like a collectible card game. The dungeon tiles and monsters on the front of the card are randomized as part of the printing process, so picking up some new cards from the bar or in an expansion deck will add variety to your game. The home version of the game will be a bit thicker than the cheaper pub version, but the different print versions will be compatible with each other. So you can mix them together freely to expand your collection.

Assuming the game sells well enough to justify future work on it, we hope to release expansions and new cards into circulation. Any new cards will adhere to our core values of keeping gameplay simple and fun, without adding unnecessary bloat to the core rules.

During early development, all the dungeon tiles were hand drawn. I still have blisters on my fingers.

Your Booty

We have thrown together some nice little packages to help incentivize your support.

Where We're At

The core game concept is finished. We've already done a ton of playtesting. Just a few finishing touches and tweaking on the gameplay. Adjusting the ratio of cards, etc. The Pint Classes still need some work. I'm not going to send those off for a print run until we finalize the design on them. The game is in the home stretch. It's already very playable, and a whole lot of fun.

Where We're Going

We are getting to the stage where we need to shift gears to mass production and marketing.

What We Need to Get There

That's what this Kickstarter is for. The materials to produce the game are significantly cheaper when bought in bulk. So we would like to purchase a large quantity at the outset. We also need to get the printing presses up and running. Additionally, we plan to outsource the bottlecaps that we use for booty, get them custom printed. And, of course, the Pint Classes for the home game boxed set. Then there's packaging and sending out promotional decks to generate interest. All these things require an investment to kickstart the project. That's why we need your help.

Risks and challenges

Due to the randomized nature of the printing process specific to this game, we are trying to acquire our own printing presses. This requires a larger initial investment, but will save costs in the long term as opposed to going through a third party printer. This is assuming the game sells well. The small, single color presses that we will be using are not as expensive as one might think. But it is still a fair bit more than we can finance without your support.

We have tried to minimize risk by getting a solid game ready before we even launch the Kickstarter. There is still some artwork and fine tuning to do. But, if push came to shove, we could start shipping by the end of the month. At this point, we're just trying to get our own printing press for the coasters. We are trying to find a cheap supplier for blank coasters. We are trying to make things efficient and cost effective for the long term while we fine tune the game and finish the art. It is going to take an investment to get things set up initially. But once the presses are up and running, we should be able to pump out cards with a vengeance.

There is a time investment in developing the game. And we are all working regular jobs at the moment to pay the bills. If we get overfunded to the point where it looks like we need to dedicate ourselves to this full time, we will. At the moment, though, everyone involved is keeping the safety net of having a regular job. So there is the challenge of budgeting time to work on the game. But that's why I set the release date all the way out in October. There is a very real possibility that we will release much earlier.

One other risk is the laws regarding drinking games at bars, and how these vary from State to State. We are trying to balance having a fun game with being able to distribute it to as many places as possible. You can always purchase the home version, no matter where you live. But the distribution to pubs may be limited in some more conservative areas of the country. Our challenge here is convincing everyone to move to States that are more fun.

One other challenge is going to be finding a place that we can print, or keeping it clean. I imagine that running a printing press out of your home is going to be messy. Right now I'm renting a townhouse. I can probably get away with making the cards in my garage. But, if it comes down to it, I'll just throw down some plastic tarps and make a 'clean room'.

As a final note, any artwork or gameplay or anything else that you see on this page is still subject to change. We are in the testing phase right now, and reserve the right to tweak the game however we feel necessary to make the best product that we can. What we have shown you here should give you a pretty good idea of where we are heading. But specific points are still subject to change if we find that they need adjustment.
