The idea originally came about from a combination of being a photographer, my love of animals and wanting to try and make a difference however small – it’s that simple.
I have attempted to produce a book that can be related to on three levels: visual, informative and intuitive, evoking a sense of intimacy with the world of elephants. My images are intended to provide a window into elephants’ private lives and behaviour, to bring them closer to us and for us to feel closer to them.
I chose elephants or they chose me – either way. They resonate in me very deeply. I had grown up with the elephant’s iconic status, on television, in zoos and as these great beings we all know, but realised I knew nothing about them, I needed to find out. I believe that in life, we are drawn to what is important to us, what lessons and messages we have to learn. I believe I was given the amazing gift to be able to work with elephants.
I focused on Sri Lanka which has a high population of Asian elephants relative to its size and was primarily interested in capturing both rare moments and the spirit of elephants, in an attempt to bring the viewer closer to bridging a personal connection between them and us; qualities that I felt a lot of wildlife books lacked. Sri Lanka was a country that I had never been to, knew nothing about and had no previous contact or connection with. It is a magical country with beautiful national parks.
After having lived periodically in Sri Lanka for over four years, working with elephants, capturing amazing moments and being amongst elephants has been a life-changing experience for me. Elephants have added colour and richness to my experience of life and deepened my appreciation of both seen and unseen communication that is evident and possible between human beings and animals.
One of the key messages of the book is that elephants are wild animals that need to be with their own family, friends, social groups and left free to be elephants, not ‘living joy rides’ for entertainment or symbolic gestures for temples and chained to a pole their whole life.
Why is it so important to educate people about Asian elephants?
A lot of attention has been paid to the largest of the two main species - the African elephant - being hunted and poached for its prized tusks. And while their population currently stands at about 470,000, it is the smaller of the species – Asian elephants – who have unfortunately drawn considerably less attention, listed as ‘critically endangered’ with dwindling numbers remaining somewhere between only 25,000 - 40,000 left in the world.
I decided that Asian elephants needed another voice. I set out to educate myself about elephants and see what I could do as a photographer and try to produce something that would afford people a more intimate contemplation of these creatures.
What will happen with the profits from the sales of the book?
All profits will be listed on the Proboscidea website after the kickstarter campaign has ended (www.proboscidea.org). This way there can be full transparency as to how much money has been collected and reports of what the money has been spent on will also be listed.
Become a part of Asian elephant conservation and species preservation – support my book – support Asian elephants. Thank you for your support!

We have been working hard and closely together for quite a while now in order to get this project funded and this wonderful book published. This project means a lot to all of us and we would be both thankful to you and extremely happy if we can see this book come to life.
How we would use the pledged money
The funds raised here on Kickstarter will be used to pay for:
With 23,000€ we can print 1000 hardcover copies of the book with a beautiful dusk jacket. With 30,000€ we can even print 2000 copies. In any case all the books will be produced climate neutrality and be printed on recycled paper.
So it basically is up to you how many of those beautiful books we can bring to life.
Our printer is located in Germany and we are also in contact with another printer if we need to source one. The book, the calendars and the postcards will be produced climate neutrality, will be printed on recycled paper (as we do not want to support cutting more trees down than necessary) with non-toxic colours and under fair labour conditions.
Where we are right now
Basically, the book is all set. Everything is written, the photos have been hand selected and the book has been proof-printed.
We are currently in the process of redesigning the existing book. The following changes will be done:
- Shortening the text to strengthen the message
- Reducing the amount of pictures to show only the best and most powerful ones
- Optimizing the size and colour of the text
- Editing the 'sponsor' and 'thank you' section
The redesigning, fact checking and proof-reading will be done latest by the 4th of January 2016. After that is done we will start printing the books. We will try our best to produce everything at the highest possible quality but also as fast as possible to deliver your requested rewards.

Risks and challenges
The risk is relatively low. If we don't reach the funding goal, then your credit card is not charged and you pay nothing.
However if we do reach the funding goal your purchase is finalised and you have just helped to launch this wonderful book. The book is written, it is currently being redesigned and our printer is waiting to print our books. We do have a second printer that could also print the books for almost the same price and conditions (just in case).
So after we have reached our funding goal we will start right away with printing the books and sending them (and the other rewards) out to you.
Maybe it takes a little bit longer until you receive your rewards but we do our best that this will not happen.
Other than that we can't foresee anything else being a problem right now.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
