About

"When reluctant elf prince Tatian Elfiore is forced on a royal mission to the Dwarven mines all hope for peace and prosperity between the kingdoms hinges on one legendary vegetable."

Halls of the Turnip King is an original graphic novel created by Canadian comic artist Brenda Hickey (My Little Pony, Ward's Valley). It is a fantasy/comedy story that follows the blunders of an unexperienced (and highly uninterested) Elf prince as he navigates the diplomatic role he will one day inherit. Tatian's father, constantly paranoid about potential wars (even when there's no hint of them), sends him on a mission to the Dwarven Mines where he and his band of bard guards attempt to charm Dwarven King Tubahd into agreeing to ally his kingdom with theirs. Y'know, make nice with other Kingdoms so that they won't want to attack yours. Of course nothing ever works that smoothly, especially when the ones in charge aren't much smarter than a basket of turnips.

Packed with slapstick comedic moments, a colourful cast of crazy characters, Newfoundland jargon and a hint of romance, Halls of the Turnip King is not to be missed by comedy comic connoisseurs!

If you're looking to sink your teeth in even deeper before jumping on the bandwagon, we have  a FREE 13 page preview for you to check out!

Oooh, so shiny!

Our goal at PegaMoose Press is to produce quality and we plan to treat Halls of the Turnip King like royalty. For those of you who'd like to see an approximation of what standard comic size looks like.

All this to say that we assure you that holding this book in your hands is going to feel like a book lover's dream come true! The people at Friesans know what they're doing.

Also, did you know the interior pages have been touched up to uphold our dedication to perfection? Well, if you think it's crazy that Brenda hand lettered the book entirely the first time, get this - to keep the lettering style consistent throughout the whole book she RE-LETTERED the first 2/3 of it for the graphic novel edition! Now you GOTTA admire THAT level of dedication! Take a look and see what I mean:

Now Brenda didn't just do the relettering because she is a glutton for punishment, oh no. As you can see she also took the time to make sure the dialogue balloons were fully readable, less cramped, and overall designed much more eloquently. This was also the purpose of redrawing those few panels where she did - to make jokes and actions read more clearly. It's really all about making your graphic novel experience that much more satisfying!

And hold up, there is still one more thing to say about this book! In order to give those who have already invested in the four issue mini series some content to get excited about, there is also an all new, 13 page epilogue and an illustration gallery to enjoy.

Comic creator Brenda Hickey has been creating comics probably since third grade. Professionally she is known for her work on Hasbro's My Little Pony series published by IDW Publishing and Ward's Valley, a creator owned graphic novel collaboration with writer Bobby Curnow, published by Top Shelf in 2018.

Turnip King pages on the drawing desk over the years.

Before all this though, she began writing and illustrating pages for Halls of the Turnip King. Since those first pages were drawn life took over - she got married, became an instant mom to twin step daughters, began work on My Little Pony, had a child of her own, travelled around the country and beyond to attend various comic cons, illustrated Ward's Valley, and EVENTUALLY put her foot down and made the decision to wrap up this Turnip King business!

In order to set small goals and finish the book she broke the story into four parts and self published (with money from her own pocket) floppy issues of Turnip King from 2015-2018. She would bring these along to the conventions she attended in hopes of building interest and a readership.

At Hal-Con 2018 with all 4 Turnip King issues!

Finally, with the completion of issue 4 in 2018 she was able to call it done and focused on making 2019 the year the book would assume its final form: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL! This is where you guys come in!

Funding small run issues alone was doable, but a graphic novel is a whole other beast. Troy Little and Brenda Hickey, the comic-creating force behind the PegaMoose Press imprint, are determined to bring you a volume of epic proportions. We hope to print 500 hard cover copies of this 152-page monster, collecting the story together as a whole and including a brand new, never before seen epilogue as well as an illustration gallery. And in case you find yourself scratching your head at our fundraising goal, here's a quick breakdown as to where we got our numbers:

To help push books into comic shops we are proud to offer a retailer tier, and if you can spare the dollars we'd super appreciate you purchasing some original art to help get us to our goal as quickly as possible.

Please spread the love by spreading the word on all your fancy social medias! And a huge thank you in advance to your contribution to seeing our dream become a reality!

Made your pledge but still find yourself wishing you could grab some extra merch? Well, look no further than the ADD ONS section! We've kept things simple as we want to keep our focus on making the book top priority and not getting too distracted by side quests like these.

...But it's no fun not to have a few things, right?

Not sure how to access the add ons? It can be a bit confusing but we're here to help you through it! We've created a step-by-step guide to getting all the goodies your little heart desires!

What?! We've hit our target goal and our funding has gone WAY above and beyond what we could ever imagine?! This is a dream come true! How could we use this extra cash and bring our beautiful, amazing backers an even better product?

With STRETCH GOALS, of course!

This may be PegaMoose Press's first Kickstarter, but we've done our research. We've spent hours studying other campaigns and learning what works and what doesn't. And, lucky for all of us, the book is already completely drawn & coloured. All that's really left to do is format and set up files. We're 100% confident that once the book is funded it won't be long before the final product is in your hands.

The printer we've chosen to work with, Friesans (https://www.friesens.com/) is based within Canada and we've heard about their good reputation. However, if there are any delays and we can't get the book to you by the promised delivery date we will be open and honest about it and contact you all as soon as there's any news.

For further reading, please check out Kickstarter's section on ACCOUNTABILITY!

Troy and Brenda from PegaMoose Press would like to take this time to thank all of you who have checked out, supported and shared our Halls of the Turnip King campaign! It's thanks to people like you indy creators can see their dreams of self publishing realised. You, my friends, are true heroes!
