I’m excited to take part in my first Kickstarter with you.
I AM MAKING AN ORIGINAL MUSIC ALBUM!
And I'm beyond thrilled about it. It’s been a long time coming, and it is happening now because of:
1) the encouragement and interest from so many of my fans, and
2) because of this encouragement, I am finally paying attention to the very insistent and persistent voice of my inner artist that's been demanding for years that I do this (waking me up in the middle of the night like a hungry kitty quite regularly).
It’s a BIG big biiiiiigggg deal to me, to finally be turning the spotlight onto my original songs in this way. And I want to share this experience with YOU. Because YOU’RE IT! You are the reason I am able to do this. All of this… the recordings, the concerts, this life of dedicating myself to making music.
What’s different this time?
If you know me, you probably know that for the past 11 years as an independent recording artist, I have been making albums. 9, to be exact. And I’m proud of all of them. Each one has been an intense DIY effort from top to bottom.
This time, it’s different.
This time, I am stepping waaaaay into unexplored territory.
This time, I’m embarking on an long-awaited journey toward not only creating an album dedicated to my original songs, but toward putting my “Project Manager (a.k.a. total-control-freak)” self in the corner and joining forces with a producer who will be helping to shape these rough-hewn pieces that have been mined from the deepest places of my soul into something shiny and gorgeous.
That person is Troy Miller, a true artist of a producer. He has produced amazing and sensitively rendered soundscapes in his work with Jamie Cullum, Gregory Porter, Laura Mvula, Becca Stevens, and others. I’m a HUGE fan of his artistry, and I know it’s going to yield a totally new and inspiring kind of musical fruit.
So why NOW?
I feel so strongly that this collection of self-penned songs deserves the best chance I can give them to achieve its full potential. I love these songs… as in, I’m 100% over the moon about them. And, let’s face it - sometimes by trying to hold too tightly to the things we really really love, we kind of risk… um… *squishing* them a bit. And I don’t want to hold my little song babies back in any sort of way with my preconceived notions or by following a path that I’ve already wandered down.
So I’m heeding the valuable life lessons of determining when to “pass the ball sometimes”, “narrowing my focus”, and “knowing when to let go”… lessons I’ve learned the hard way over and over again, and I’m ready to be a wiser version of myself and for my art to take on new dimensions as a result. Yay, personal growth! And yeah, I’m gonna have some strong opinions (hah! Have you met me?!). But I’m also gonna practice some radical trust. It’s going to be transformative. For the music, and for me. I know this.
What’s in these songs of mine?
So, I could talk about this for… forever. But here’s a somewhat shorter summary: These are songs inspired by my life – but they are about yours, too. Because we all share the same stories – they are merely starring different names and faces and places and altered circumstances.
Since I’ve lived in Alaska and Oregon most of my life, I’m a nature girl through and through. Imagery from the natural world is woven throughout much of my art. Because it’s inspiring to me and it’s the way my artist’s mind works.
I’ve also found many of these songs orbiting around the concept of “letting go”… it’s been a really rich source of inspiration for me the past two years.
Of course, this music will also be about love and loss and beauty and tragedy and the whole range of human emotions. It’ll make you dance and cry and smile and remember important things.
It’ll make you feel.
SO MANY FEELINGS!!!
This project means a lot to me. And, judging by how many countless times fans have told me they’d really love to hear more of my original songs, I think it will be something special to others (perhaps you?!) as well.
I’m asking you to help me with bringing all the potential of these songs into full realization.
What will you be helping to pay for?
Your contributions to this campaign will go toward funding:
- studio time
- musicians’ time and energy
- recording engineering
- mixing and mastering
- artwork and photography
- getting the album OUT THERE into the world (promotion, etc.)
- music video goodness
- … and a really long list of other necessary things it takes to bring an album into being.
Why do I need you to be part of this?
I always need you… you are the reason I am able to continue to dedicate my life to making music to share with other people around the world! I have thought about doing a Kickstarter for several years now, but always felt like I needed to wait for THE MOMENT. You know, the one moment that shines as something really special and different. Something to save up for. And it’s HERE.
It’s time for reaching higher, and reaching higher in album production terms requires more funding. I’ve self-funded all previous projects. This one is a much bigger stretch for me as an independent artist. I not only am hoping for your help with this aspect, but to have you as part of a community around this project, helping to get it off the ground and into glorious flight TOGETHER!
What do YOU get in return?
There are some major perks involved with being part of this community, too! Like the MUSIC! EARLY!!! And things like original art, concerts IN YOUR HOUSE, backstage meet and greets, silly and fun creations, meaningful objects, and so much more. All from my hands and heart, directly to you.

Risks and challenges
I'm SUPER excited to be doing this. I have so many wonderful people by my side, helping foster this music into the world, and that includes YOU. I know we can do it.
I'll be letting you know every step of the way how things are progressing, and keeping you a part of this process because that's what I CAN do and will feel super privileged to do (thanks to Kickstarter and the platform it gives me to share "Updates" with you!)
Of course, there's always the slight chance of production delays, but we've got a very detailed schedule laid out and an EXCELLENT team of professionals on the artistic and business end that will be contributing toward making this album project run smoothly.
Also, did I mention that I've done this whole "recording and finishing an album" thing already 9 TIMES? And I haven't missed a major deadline yet... so... chances are looking pretty great for things to pan out well for this whole thing. :) I am nothing if not a hard worker when it comes time to buckle down and MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.
We can do this! Yesssssss!!!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
