Written by Anthony King and Scott Brown, Gutenberg: The Musical is a two-man musical comedy about aspiring playwrights, Bud and Doug. Hoping that someone in the audience will come forward to throw millions behind their ill-advised and historically inaccurate laughable musical, Bud and Doug perform every role in the show, switching hats and voices at a breakneck pace to help their audience keep track of the characters. By the end of the show, patrons will wonder who they are really rooting for: Johann Gutenberg, in his struggle against the evil Monk for universal literacy, or Bud and Doug, in their own naive, valiant, and heartfelt battle for their own theatrical dreams!
This is, simply put, one of our favorite musicals. Please help us bring it to you and your friends this year!
Two-man show or not, to bring Gutenberg: The Musical to the North Bay we need a TEAM, and we hope you will be part of that team! We couldn’t have made the above awesome video without any one of the forty plus volunteers who showed up and put in one incredibly hard day of work just for the chance of seeing this show get funded! Likewise, we will not be able to rehearse or officially announce the show without your financial support.
But here’s the fun part…
Contribution to this show makes you a fellow collaborator- a producer- and a highly appreciated one. Every dollar counts and everyone who donates even a dollar matters- we all need each others' help!
Every cent you donate goes directly toward the show!
You are paying for performance rights and the rental of the scores, a rate decided upon by Samuel French Theatrical Licensing Co. You will also be supplying us with the necessary budget to purchase and build new costume pieces, props, and other supplies!
Our budget also supports helping us hire the creative and technical help that no production can do without. Now, Nick and Trevor comprise a huge part of the creative team for this show, and we don't have to hire ourselves-- seeing the show come together and getting to perform in it again for you all is the only payment we need! But to make sure you enjoy the show as much as we do, we need to hire a team, including: a stage manager, the backbone of the production; a lighting designer, who can hang, focus, and program the lights so our pretty faces can be seen; and an excellent accompanist. Anyone who plays piano knows that accompanying for a musical is work, and months of rehearsal and three weekends of performances deserves some tangible recognition (money)! Making theater takes a lot of talented and well-trained folk!
That being said, we are asking for the bare minimum required to make this show excellent. We need every cent to make this show happen-- and every extra cent beyond will only go towards making the show even better! We just want to do this show!
Now THIS is exciting! Santa Rosa’s award-winning 6th Street Playhouse has agreed to partner with us to bring Gutenberg! The Musical! onto the stage this summer!
6th Street Playhouse, which received "Theater of the Year" and "Best Local Musical" (for Kiss Me, Kate) at the 2012 BroadwayWorld San Francisco Awards, has welcomed our run of Gutenberg! The Musical! into its Studio Theater, for three weekends in July. This studio is a charming 99-seat house that is PERFECT for bringing Bud and Doug's Gutenberg! adventure to life!
Huge thank-you's are in order to 6th Street Playhouse's Artistic Director, Craig Miller, for working with us over the last several months to arrange this collaboration, and for inviting us to be a part of the Summer Season in 6th Street's Studio Theater!
If the project achieves its funding goal, our production of Anthony King and Scott Brown's brash and zany two-man pseudo-historical-musical-biographical comedy will play from July 6 through July 22 in 6th Street's Studio Theater!
Because it is THAT MUCH FUN! It should happen every year!
Written by Scott Brown and Anthony King, this musical began at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York, where the authors played the roles of Bud and Doug while developing the show. It continued on to London and Off-Broadway runs, winning Drama Desk Awards for Best Book and Best Director of a Musical. The infectious, brilliant humor and refreshing energy of Gutenberg! The Musical! -- no doubt stemming largely from the humor and energy of the authors' collaboration on the piece-- has it catching on all over the country and even the world.
And the performance rights are available through Samuel French Inc.! So we at Breaking Fourth figure: it's available. It's hilarious. It's a two-man show for comic actors and singers. It's a play about collaboration, hope, and unbridled love for musical theater.
Now, we already licensed and performed a one-weekend run of Gutenberg the musical in Petaluma’s Cinnabar Theater last summer (2011) and the response was staggering! We had people calling to ask if we were extending the run, and have spent the year hearing from friends, family, and total strangers how much they loved it and would love to see it again!
For reference, here's a taste of last year's production: a promotional trailer we shot for our performances at Cinnabar Theater. Remember, this is just for reference-- don't show up in Petaluma for Gutenberg this year!
So, we have to admit: It’s a blast for us, too! WE LOVE THIS SHOW! We cannot imagine a better way to spend our July than in bringing you Gutenberg! the Musical!
Who doesn't love being rewarded for supporting theater? We have some pretty cool stuff lined up for anyone who helps us out. This is like a win/win! Check it all out below.
The GRASS ROOTS GIVER ($10) -
Your name displayed prominently in the theatrical program as a producer, and all the ego-inflation that goes with it!
The GRASS ROOTS GO-GETTER ($25) -
We have some amazing original artwork for our production done by extremely talented local artists. You snag the 11x17 print of your choice, just by being awesome and pledging $25!

Jesse Maccabe is a concept artist at Telltale Games currently working on The Walking Dead. His past credits include Alpha Protocol, Poker Night at the Inventory, and Jurassic Park: The Game.

The GRASS ROOTS GODSEND ($50) -
Now we're talking. In addition to the previous rewards, you lock down your very own ticket to the show, and your choice of any one of the 20+ hats used in the performance you attend. Will you choose "Monk"? Or are you more of a "Dead Baby" kind of person?
The HOB-NOBBER ($100) -
We heard some of you are so generous, you'd want to buy a friend an extra ticket so they can join you on the performance of your choosing. And now, you don't have to choose your favorite poster; they're both yours! Let's just hope your friend understands your lack of poster share-age, you hob-nobber you.
The PATRON OF THE ARTS ($200) -
So we have this hat... this really really awesome hat... it's kinda top secret, and we can't say much, but we can say it might be the coolest sparkle glitter hat you've ever wanted. This is for the producer who isn't impressed with hats worn by common actors. This is a hat, nay, THE hat, for any gentleman or woman who understands what it means to be a true producer. No matter what the occasion, wearing this hat will demand respect* and force all those around to you to their knees. Of course that might just be because of the blinding light the mountain of glitter is sure to produce.
*No respect guaranteed
The FAT CAT ($500) -
So you got your name in the program, two tickets, both posters, a hat from the show, and a SPARKLE GLITTER "PRODUCER" hat. But lets face it... you're not gonna be around forever. Sure you could leave your kids the estate, but what about this: why not have your name (or any of your choosing) immortalized forever in our ENTIRE RUN of Gutenberg! The Musical!. Think about that for second! Your name could live on a hat used in the show. And when the run's over, we'll make sure it finds it's way back home and onto your mantle.
The ANGEL ($750) -
Wow... you... you're an angel! We're blushing over here! With this sort of contribution, you deserve to be there before anyone else. We're having a press party July 5th, and you and your guest are now invited. Join us at 6th Street Playhouse for a catered event where we will be talking all about the show, why we love it, and what our process was like. Of course after that has concluded, be a part of the first audience to actually see the finished show!
The ARCHANGEL ($1000) -
You've done so much... is this a dream? Gosh, we can't really offer much more. Except... well of course! If you show your support by pledging this much money, we have no choice but to offer you a small role in the show itself. Now I know you're sitting there thinking to yourself, "But isn't this a two man show?" Well lets just say, we have ways of making you talk. In addition to that, or if you don't have any interest in joining us on stage, we will dedicate a performance to you or person of your choosing. Your contribution really made all of our dreams come true, and we will never forget you, *your name here*!
