We've almost hit 40% of our goal now, and it seemed like a good time to tell you a bit more about the exclusive game that goes to everyone who funds us for $15 or more: Jan Willem 'JW' Nijman's tennis game, TENNNES!
How can I describe the experience of playing TENNNES? It's almost as visually minimalistic as Pong, and it has very simple pick-up-and-play controls like Virtua Tennis, but it's tactically much deeper than either of those games. It lets you take wild liberties with the rules - for example, you can lob the ball out of court, then catch up to it and hit it back in. You can run around the net and hit the other guy's ball before he can serve it, causing him to fault. Forget serve-and-volley: you can run up to the net and *jump it*, bringing the game to the other player. Somehow JW managed to balance the game so that no matter how much you break the rules, the game stays balanced and incredibly competitive. It's hilarious, it's addictive, and I can't imagine a reward that better matches the games in the Sportsfriends package.
TENNNES debuted at NYU's No Quarter exhibition this year, alongside BaraBariBall. Since its inception in 2009, No Quarter has commissioned a number of groundbreaking games, including Hokra and the amazing Nidhogg.
Jan Willem Nijman is one of indie gaming's rising superstars. One half of game studio Vlambeer, he designed Super Crate Box and Radical Fishing, among many others. The sound in TENNNES was contributed by Eirik Suhrke, who also worked on Spelunky and Super Crate Box.
We're incredibly humbled to be able to offer you guys such an awesome Kickstarter reward. But we can only get it to you if we hit our target, so we need you to help us get the word out as much as you can!
We've got a bunch of stuff going on this week to promote Sportsfriends:
First, we launched a Tumblr this week, you can check it out here. If you're a tumblr kind of guy/girl, maybe you could tumbl it over to your tumbler friends! Let's get this thing tumbling.
We're showing all the games at the launch party for the new Motherboard website in NYC. I finished my first update to iPhone QWOP in two years, which will launch with a promotional message. And we got covered in Forbes! We're playing all the angles we can think of, but if you have any ideas, post them in the comments or hit us up on twitter.
In the coming days we'll have a lot more to announce as we try to get the word out to a wider audience, so stay tuned!
