About

WikiArchitecture.org, the FREE architecture encyclopedia used by more than 10K architecture students and enthusiasts every single day needs your help to step up its game!

WikiArchitecture.org has been online for over 12 years now, collecting valuable information on the most relevant architects and buildings of all times and making them available to everyone on-line for FREE

So, why are we here and why do we need your help:

First, we want to implement a new cool redesign to improve the experience of using the site. The new design is already done thanks to the wonderful team at Montenegro Creative Studio, the only thing that’s left to do is translate it to code and apply it to the site.

Second, and most important, we want to keep growing our database, faster and with even better content, better translations, better photos, better drawings, better everything!

In order to be able to grow our database sustainably over time without having to constantly ask you for more money we need to build some recurrent revenue, and we plan to do that by launching an on-line architecture boutique store. All revenue generated by this store will be reinvested into producing more content that we’ll make available for FREE.

In a nutshell that’s what we need your help for :)

Now let’s take a quick look at some of the products we will be offering in the boutique store and that you can get your hands on really soon if you decide to back us.

The designs have been made by local artist and longtime WikiArchitecture contributor Maria de la Paz. All products comply with the highest environmental standards. T-shirts and tote bags are 100% organic certified cotton and notebooks and postcards are made from high quality recycled materials. All of these are then screen printed by hand in a small shop in Barcelona (nothing digital, no big companies involved) with environmentally friendly water-based paints.

WikiArchitecture.org is a FREE to use on-line tool that helps architecture students and professionals with their research process as well as architecture enthusiasts learn more about the buildings they like, discover new ones, organize trips, etc.

All the information we publish is written by and revised by our in-house team of architects, architecture professors and professionals from other disciplines such as historians or sociologists. Our articles include unique analysis of each building’s history, concept, spaces, construction techniques and materials used. We do not publish press releases or any of the other articles we receive in our inbox every day.

WikiArchitecture is used daily by over 10 thousand people. 80% of our traffic comes from architecture students who use our database to research relevant projects that they need for their classes or as an inspiration for their own projects. The other 20% of our traffic comes from professional architects looking for information that helps them in their projects and architecture enthusiasts who like to learn a bit more about the architecture in their city or find which buildings they should visit on their next trip abroad.

And what would these people say if you asked them about WikiArchitecture? We’ve collected a few quotes we loved from our users :)

We have some pretty clear goals for the near future and a good idea of how to make them happen, but we need your help to make them a reality.

So, if with your help we manage to make this campaign successful these are the things you can expect to see from us very soon!

New search tools

What good is it to have information on thousands of buildings and architects if you can’t find what you are looking for? Right now users can only make simple searches of our database using just one criteria, for instance “buildings by Norman Foster” or “buildings in New York”

But with your help we could easily change that and make way more advanced searches possible, for example “buildings by Norman Foster taller than 100m” or “houses designed by Mies van der Rohe in the US” or “libraries built in the US between 1960 and 1990”. All that information is already in our database, we just need to build the tools to be able to access it!

New user interface

Having more options and tools to search our database is great, but they will be no good if you need a master to use them and read the results… that’s why we’ve partnered with Barcelona based Montenegro Creative Studio who have designed an amazing new user interface for WikiArchitecture.org. The design is already finished, it just needs to be implemented!

Grow our database faster

We currently offer information on thousands of historically relevant buildings, but we know we are still missing many, actually a lot! Every single one of our articles is researched, written, edited and published by professional architects and professors. Writing a single article takes days, sometimes even weeks to make sure all the information is complete and correct. That’s not going to change, we will always value quality over quantity, but if we could add a couple more editors to our team we could grow our database much faster and make sure no relevant architects or buildings are left behind.

Improve our translations

We believe information should be accessible to everyone, that’s why our database is published online and for FREE. But access to the internet is not the only barrier, language is also a huge obstacle, and even though automated translation tools are getting better every day they are still not good enough to guaranty accuracy and a good comprehension. That’s why we want to invest into properly translating all the content we already have, and the only way to do that right now is with human talent which we want to add to our team.

Our goals are clear, but how are we planning to achieve them? We know that asking you to help us with all of them is not fair, nor is it scalable.

WikiArchitecture has been online since 2007, and we plan to be here for a very, very long time, that’s why we need to look into the future and make a plan to grow steadily and not just spike after this campaign (which we are sure will reach its goal with your help! 😊). Using your money just to create new content or to translate the one we have wouldn’t be treating your money with the respect it deserves. If we did that we would sure be able to add few more buildings to the database, maybe even translate them to a couple languages, but eventually the money would run out and we would be back to the beginning, asking for more of your money, which we really would like to avoid.

Instead we will use your money to improve our infrastructure, build the new search tools, implement the new interface and build an on-line store that generates enough revenue for us to grow the database and translate it without having to ask you for more money in the future. And this is how the funds collected will be distributed amongst these goals.

About the online boutique store

We live and breathe architecture, we love it and enjoy it and probably wouldn’t know what to do without it in our daily lives. But we know that’s not only us. Architecture has a way of capturing you, and once it has there’s no going back, you’ll be in love with architecture (for the good and the bad) forever.

In our online boutique store, architecture lovers will find a collection of unique themed products and objects that will represent that love for architecture that we all share. T-shirts, mugs, posters, books and much more, all of them produced with the highest quality and environmental standards.

We will partner with architects and artist to create unique designs that you won’t be able to find anywhere else. These products will be the perfect gift, the delight of any architecture lover out there.

All the profits that the boutique store makes will be directly reinvested into growing and translating the database. This way we’ll be able to grow it steadily and continuously for many years to come without having to ask you for any more money.

The very first collection of products that will be available are the rewards you can get your hands on if you decide to back us, so let’s take a closer look at them! :)

T-shirts

Because good looking products shouldn’t come at any price, our t-shirts are made from 100% organic cotton and screen printed by hand in Barcelona using environmentally friendly water-based paints.

With 6 building designs available we offer 10 different colors and sizes ranging from XS to XL for both man and woman

Available for man and woman in 10 different colors

Notebooks

As architects (or future architects) drawing is a lot more than just a pretty doodle, drawing is a way of expression, a way to communicate our ideas and create new ones.

This is a hard cover A5 high quality notebook make of recycled cardboard. 100 pages of free space for you to take notes and illustrate your ideas. The notebook also comes with an elastic band (red or black) to keep the notebook properly closed while carrying it and a matching bookmark.

Tote bags

Tote bags are not only really cool, they are also a great alternative to plastic bags which are having a huge impact in our seas. Whether you need to go shopping for groceries or material for models we are sure these tote bags will always come in handy.

These tote bags are made from 310g/m2 100% organic cotton and come with official OCS100 certification. They have a capacity of 13 liters and 70cm long handles.

Pick your building

Like we said, if this campaign reaches its goal we will be able to add a lot more buildings to our database which we are currently missing. Our editors take great care in picking which buildings to add to make sure our database is balanced and diverse.

However, if you have a favorite building that you would like to add right away, back us and we’ll take your request to the top of the list and have the building researched and published in just a few weeks!

Promote your product or brand

If you are an architecture studio, a school or if you simply offer a service or product that you believe architecture students and professionals might be interested in, this is your chance to promote it to the WikiArchitecture community for far less than usual!

Back us on this campaign and have your portfolio, service or product featured on our Instagram (with over 32K followers) and/or our website (with more than 10K visitors per day).

Just remember that the service or product to promote must be related to the industry, so if you have any doubts about it please ask before pledging ;)

Time is valuable, and so if with your help we reach the goal for this campaign we won’t waste any and get right to work!

The new user interface design is already completed thanks to the amazing team at Montenegro Creative Studio, it just needs to be implemented. The logic behind the new search tools is already thought and defined, it just needs to be coded and the unique illustrations by artist Maria Blanco Urueña are already finalized and ready to go into production.

So let’s talk dates:

Risks and challenges

The main risk is that once the online boutique is online it doesn’t generate enough revenue to have a significant impact in the speed at which we are able to grow and improve our database.

In any case that won’t affect our ability to deliver on the rewards from this campaign. The only risk regarding the rewards of this campaign are that the suppliers might be slower than expected in delivering the basic products for us to screen print, but we have done some test orders with them and are pretty confident they will deliver on time ;)
