Story War: Sentinel Conflict & "Cosmic Contest" Comic Book
Sentinel Conflict is a super-powered party game for 3-8 players in which you control the greatest “what if?” fights in the Multiverse!
This project was cancelled due to a lack of interest, but we all learned important things from it! Check out our update about it for more information. And stay tuned for more exciting things from Greater Than Games!
At PAX Australia 2013, we got to hang out with Tom from Cantrip Games. Later that year, we had a great PAX Prime with both Tom and Brad, and enjoyed playing their great party game: Story War. We here at Greater Than Games have always been interested in storytelling through playing games, so Story War was the right kind of party game for us!
In the last year, we’ve talked to both Tom and Brad a good deal. They're great guys and made a great game, so it is only natural that a Sentinel Comics version of Story War would be created!
Story War is all about using creativity and humor in impromptu storytelling to defeat your opponents! In Sentinel Conflict, each player will have a hand of Character cards and Item cards, and will use those heroes, villains, devices, and equipment to assemble the best team to take on the other players!
Here is the rulebook for the original Story War game. The only notable difference is that, in Sentinel Conflict, we have Characters rather than Warriors - Environments rather than Battlegrounds - just to fit in with the already established comic book themes of Sentinel Comics.
In a game of Sentinel Conflict, each team will have three Characters in play. Each team will also get to add one item for their characters to use, usually after a bit of exposition about why their team is already great and how this item makes them even better! Each conflict takes place in an Environment, and both teams would be wise to take advantage of the various elements of that Environment, weaving it into their stories about why their team of three Characters will win.
Story War: Sentinel Conflict comes with a rulebook and three decks of cards: 60 Character cards, 30 Item cards, and 20 Environment cards.
The Characters are the ones who will do battle, using the Items to boost them, all the while dealing with the complications of the Environment in which the battle takes place.
As part of this Kickstarter, Christopher (writer of all things Sentinel Comics) and Adam (artist for all things Sentinel Comics) have been working on a huge comic book! With over 50 full-color pages of story and combat, the Sentinel Comics one-shot “Cosmic Contest” will be our first physically printed comic book! We're very excited.
Cosmic Contest is the story of how a powerful extraterrestrial being pitted the heroes of Earth against each other as a result of the impending doom certain to befall the Multiverse! We could say more… but we won’t. Not just yet. Stay tuned for future updates, in which we reveal more of what the pages of Cosmic Contest will hold.
For this Kickstarter, we have a very simple pledge level system. A level for just the comic book, a level for just the game, and a level for both. Pretty straightforward, right? Here they all are:
If you're interested in adding on additional copies of either the game or the comic book to your pledge level, contact us via the “Contact me” link at the top of this page.
We do have many Stretch Goals planned, as we have learned in our previous Kickstarters just how important it is to reward backers of a successful campaign. And these Stretch Rewards are GREAT! Anyone who backs any of our three Pledge Levels will get all of the unlocked Stretch Rewards, which we will reveal as those goals are reached.
The first Stretch Goal will unlock the “Sentinel Conflict Prestige Pack”, which will combine all of the other stretch goals into one pack of things! So, each Stretch Goal level (other than the $150k level…) adds more content to the Prestige Pack!
The Stretch Goal levels which add 1 New Card add extra character, item, or environment cards to the Prestige Pack.
The Objective Card level add 3 Objective Cards, which give alternate objectives to complete in the process of a game, changing the way in which you must defeat your opponents.
The Foil Promo Cards level gets you fancy foil versions of some of the cards in the game! These do not go in the Prestige Pack, but remain separate as collectable promo cards.
If the Kickstarter over-funds by more than what’s on our current Stretch Goal graphic, we will reveal even more exciting options! Keep an eye on our updates to see specifics about the Stretch Goals as they are unlocked!
Since we are launching this Kickstarter in mid-December, we know many of you will want to give your backer rewards as holiday gifts. For you, we have this fancy certificate!
(Note that the estimated delivery of this project is June of 2015.)
Shipping, especially Internationally, is expensive. However, we've gotten pretty good at it over the years! For this Kickstarter, each Pledge Level is the MSRP of the product. If you live in the US or Canada, Kickstarter will charge you an additional $10 for shipping and handling. Yes, Canadian shipping is the same cost, and we've made sure there will be no import duties or taxes! We are covering any additional shipping costs to make sure that you get what you want for as little as possible.
In the EU, backers will pay $40 additional for shipping, as shipping is expensive. However, we do have our shipping methods in proper order to make sure that backers in the EU will pay zero taxes or import duties on your rewards when they are shipped to you. So, while the cost of shipping is still higher than we would like, we are able to make sure that there will be no additional fees.
For everywhere else in the world, your pledge will cost an additional $50, as international shipping is still very costly to do correctly, and we want to make sure that everyone receives their games and comic books on time and safely.
If you are in Australia and would like to pick up your game from a local gaming store, we've worked out a plan with Good Games distribution by which we can make this happen. Just pledge on a regular level without adding any additional cost for shipping and we'll ask as part of the survey at the end of the campaign if you are doing an in-store pick-up.
Over the course of this campaign, any media coverage of the game and/or the campaign will be listed here. If you are a media person who has written something which should be linked here, send us a message through the “Contact me” link at the top of this page, and we’ll get your link posted here ASAP!

Risks and challenges
Although we have quite a bit of experience making board games, this will be our first foray into comic books. Although we are confident in our ability to produce a high quality product, we have never done so before and could run into unexpected challenges.
Additionally, the bulk of our last Kickstarter campaign, Sentinel Tactics: The Flame of Freedom, shipped four months early. There is a risk that backers of this campaign will expect it to ship as early, which is unlikely and could create false expectations.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
