About

Hyperspace Smuggler puts you in the pilot's seat of your favorite space freighter! This tile-laying strategy game lets you explore the galaxy, engage in exciting adventures, and battle your fellow players as you race to deliver cargo. It's easy to learn, rewards strategic play, and features a unique Hyperspace movement mechanic. Click here to read the game rules!

 51 tiles / 24 laser cards / 24 engine cards / 24 hyperdrive cards / 12 alert markers / 13 cargo cards / 16 crew cards / 6 rules cards / 4 player ships / 1 rule book

Everything in the box (sans rulebook) in prototype form
Everything in the box (sans rulebook) in prototype form

These are prototype components. The main game components will be professionally produced (by AdMagic!) and graphic designed (by Mary K. Delaware!). Look for designs coming to backer updates soon! Expansion content is high on my list of stretch goals. New tile types, new game mechanics, and possibly new ship types may appear if we meet certain goals!

STRETCH GOALS:

If we hit certain funding thresholds, I can add to the game at no extra cost to you! Backers (that's you!) will have a lot of say in this process via surveys sent out in backer updates. Right out of the gate, I've got something I'm very excited about: at $33,000, I'll add in three new tile types. More variety in your space exploration = a more exciting game!

Play as a daring smuggler captain.
Play as a daring smuggler captain.

In this game, you will...

- Become a daring smuggler captain.

- Explore space, building the board as you go.

- Jump from point to point using hyperspace.

- Use unique abilities to deal with danger.

Hyperspace Smuggler has...

 - A simple rulebook, making it easy to learn and teach.

- Lots of tactical choices: Your movements matter, and the quickest route home is not always the safest.

- High replayability: The board is new every game.

- Incredible artwork from esteemed board game illustrator John Ariosa.

NEW TO BOARD GAMING? This game has a few simple rules that combine to generate lots of fun, outer-space adventures. If it's a fast-paced, space adventure you're looking for, you've come to the right place. This game plays in about an hour (including setup time), so you'll be able to play it again or move on to other things once you've secured your place in the Smuggler's Guild.

SEASONED GAMER? Me too! I wanted to make an adventure game that was light enough for my friends who weren't yet into board gaming, but had enough strategic depth that it would still be interesting for me to play. This game has a short rulebook, but the game's systems interact to create incredible potential for strategic play, with lots of player interaction and conflict.

WHY DO I NEED THIS MONEY? Manufacturing and shipping a board game is not cheap. Even so, the goal for this project is a little higher than some other tabletop Kickstarter games. This is for two reasons: Tiles are the first: The base game ships with 51 tiles, which cost more to produce and ship than cards. Art is the second: I want to make a game that looks great on the table, and that means paying a skilled professional (in this case, John Ariosa, an acclaimed board game artist who was the lead artist on Mice and Mystics).

First, the rules: They're quick to read, so you can get playing right away! You can look at them here

Jesse Hickle at Boards and Bees says "It moves quickly, and there’s the potential for lots of exciting action as you work out exactly how you’re going to get where you need to go." Click to read the full review!

Brendon Solits at Gaming for Justice says "I love [the hyperspace movement] mechanic! As the game progresses more and more pathways are opened up to the player via the warp action. I really like seeing innovative and unique changes to well established board game mechanics and I think the warp mechanic in Hyperspace Smuggler does that for pick up and deliver.Click to read the full review!

NVS at NVS Gameplays says "It's presented in a way that you can enjoy the fun. You're not bogged down by rules..." Check out his play-through and thoughts below:

Charalampos Tsakiris of Future Games (all the way in Greece!) played the print-and-play version and said, "I had fun… It’s easy to understand. It’s easy to play with gamers that are not into heavy board games yet.” Check out his video below:

The game has been growing and changing since review copies were shipped, which explains any discrepancies between these video and the rules linked above.

INTERVIEWS:

I spoke with Daniel Zayas of Smarter Backer about the game and my inspiration for it:

I wrote a brief designer's diary that was featured on the board gaming story site Analog Games.

And here's a link  me talking about my experiences designing Hyperspace Smuggler (and real-world games) on the Cardboard Architects podcast.

Risks and challenges

This is my first tabletop game project, but it's not my first game project. Plain Sight Games regularly designs and executes real-world games and scavenger hunts, so I have plenty of experience seeing a project through from start to finish.

Additionally, I have more than 5 years of experience in the specialty coffee industry, so the ins and outs of global production and shipping are not new to me. Learning the specifics of production schedules and shipping logistics is my biggest hurdle, but I'm confident that with the help of my team and the advice of the many Kickstarter creators who have gone before me, I'll be able to deliver the project on time.
