GRUMMY is a gothic fantasy short film about a young girl's flight from an abusive childhood into the amber fields, and long fangs, of her imagination.
Inspired by the worlds of Terry Gilliam, Hayao Miyazaki, and Jim Henson, and brought to life by effects legend KEVIN YAGHER (CHILD'S PLAY, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, TALES FROM THE CRYPT), this story is based on real-life events from co-writer/director Micheline Pitt's childhood. This distinctly female-driven genre project serves as a haunting lullaby for victims of abuse, created by a woman who relied upon her own imagination to survive it.
GRUMMY is the story of how monsters saved her life.
GRUMMY is a cinematic love note to the glory days of physical sets and effects in 80's/90's-era fantasy films. By embracing the practical, lived-in worlds at risk of being washed away in a deluge of CGI, this project offers something unique in today's film landscape: a living and breathing, hand-crafted, tactile world of whimsy, color, and light.
Every dollar of your hard earned money will appear on screen in:
- Live action creatures with animatronics
- A full studio fantasy set, including detailed miniatures
- Expansive matte paintings
- The best team you could hope to assemble for a short film
We are building monsters. The real sort, that you can touch and feel. But we're also building a world that offers great value to our backers beyond the film itself.
Expanding on the universe of GRUMMY, this project includes two high-quality companion books as rewards:
GRUMMY CHILDREN'S BOOK
Written and illustrated by Micheline Pitt, this full color, hardbound children's book serves as a prequel to the film, inspired by the classic style of Little Golden Books. This fantasy romp will take you deeper into the vivid world of our title character, brought to life in Micheline's signature art style.

You should back GRUMMY because...
- This is a story only a woman can tell, and female filmmakers deserve a voice in genre.
- We're fighting to preserve the live action physical creatures and production design that defined our childhoods.
- You're betting on a winning team who've worked on some of the most beloved franchises and films in cinema history.
- We WILL give you your money's worth -- our awesome companion books are worthy of crowdfunding campaigns of their own.
- You will get an insider's view into the work of a creature effects master in Kevin Yagher.
- This little monster is the start of something MUCH bigger -- and you can be a critical part of it from the start.
But most of all, because we can't do this without you.
Risks and challenges
Building a believable monster and world is just as expensive for a short as it is for a feature.
For example, a monster suit with animatronics can easily cost $100,000 alone. While we're fortunate to have many volunteers on our team, our goal of $95,000 is the bare minimum by which we can produce this film -- a minimum which will demand creative compromises to cut hard costs.
Bottom line: the amount of funding we raise will ultimately dictate the depth, expressiveness, and scale of our world, along with the creatures that inhabit it.
In order to afford the animatronics, physical sets, and labor necessary to realize the full creative potential of this story, our goal is to exceed $130,000 in pledges. Reaching this stretch goal will provide: professional animatronics with a full range of emotional expressiveness, more expansive sets, and, crucially, more shooting days to accommodate the allowable working hours of child actors.
We have BIG plans for our little monster, including a feature length adaptation. Successful funding of this short film will in turn help finance the feature version. Thanks to your generous support, our monster will be built and ready to go for his feature debut.
As we approach our initial goal, we'll have some great stretch goal perks to announce. Stay tuned!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
