Space War in Space!! re-purposes the saying “War. War never changes” to suggest that sometimes, War does change, and it changes for the better. Why use a lifeless deck of cards and pretend to control a vast army of bloodthirsty savages when you can pick what bloodthirsty savage best represents your basest, most conquering desires? Send your army into the far arms of the galaxy to prove you’re the one to rule. Utilize your Factions strengths and carefully honed Powers to see your enemies driven before you. To impose your will upon their planet. Their people. Their public transportation system. Experience War the way it was meant to be experienced.
The base game of Space War: In Space!! comes with a total of 5 Factions broken down into 62 cards.
A fight to the death for 2-5 players, your battle begins by selecting one of the five base factions:
Will you choose Humanity? Humans have always struggled to think of themselves symbiotically. They categorize themselves by race. By gender. By social status. By country. They fail to see themselves as a whole. But time is the great unifier. When overpopulation finally reminded the primates of their lack of forward thinking, the Great Lottery became their last chance for survival. That was seventy years ago. Earth is spent. A sponge wrung out. Now, the last remnants of the Human race hurtle through a merciless galaxy, forced to rely on one another to survive. General Washington (no relation) watches over the dwindling empire, protecting her people from threats without and within.
Dwarves? Their craftsman bazaars were once the greatest in the galaxy with Posts in each of the Seven Systems and a seat on the Council Galactic, but greed drove them to ruin. They hoarded their knowledge. Their ore. Their trade. Over time, the greater CG grew distrustful of this distrustful race. One-by-one, their Great Forges burned out. One-by-one, they were abandon their Posts. Now exiled, their limited resources on Asteroid Groundhollow have forced the Foreman to turn his eye to neighboring planets so his people might find the means to finish their Final Project, and reclaim their place within the galactic elite.
Or the Elves where, in the beginning, the Four Spirits opened their eyes and the universe opened its eyes with them. They retired to Quility where they combined their collective essences to shape the First People, creatures of wind and water and flame and soil to tend them in their waning. But it is not right for a congregation to outlive their gods. So the First People took their relics and created their own life, new gods warped and impure and made mad by their wracked sorceries. Unsatisfied with the lesson of peace, the gods of the First People send forth their missionaries - these Elves - into the universe to bring a galaxy without faith to the light.
Perhaps you fancy yourself able to command the unpredictable choosing to back the Trolls. It was Chef Mud who first discovered the many uses of limestone in relation to the spice properties of minerals when mixed with a boiling pot of dust broth. Since this groundbreaking revelation, The Chefs of Ore were elevated to the role of clan leaders - bastardized, later, into the now used Chief - with the Chef holding the Great Recipe being crowned as Sous over all clans. Both unwilling and unsatisfied to limit themselves to ingredients found only on Ore, Sous Chef Slate tasked his people to raise their clubs and leave their planet in search of new rocks with which to set their tables.
Goblins. There is no individual. No name. No class. Only Tribe. Only Goblin. Tribe Pure. Untainted. Bred to harmony. Other Tribes false. Flat water. Goblin kill explorers. Steal ship. Cannot fly ship. But learn. Send Goblin and Goblin and Goblin and Goblin until none fit. Erase Tribes. Steal ships. Purify water.
No matter who you decide to conquer the galaxy with, your army is only one piece of the fight. Not only does each Faction have their own number-curve, Faction specific Powers will alter the way you play your Faction and how your opponents respond.
What do we mean by number-curve? Let's compare Dwarves with Humans. Dwarves, you see, have a handful of 1s and 2s sprinkled throughout their decks. Fodder for the opposing army, you might think, especially since Humans begin at 3. On the surface it might seem as though Humans have a distinct advantage over the Dwarven horde when, in reality, Humans see fewer high-numbers the further up the ranks they climb (ignoring, of course, the formidable General Washington) where Dwarves see an increase. This spread is seen across all Factions allowing not only for some strategic command opportunities by their players, but acts as a small piece of lore building as well.
Powers come in a variety of flavors, the most common of which is through Player-timed abilities. Let's go back to the Dwarves. After their leader, the Forgemaster, enters the fight, he grants his controller Dwarven Armor and the ability to add an additional point of strength to their attacks for a subsequent battle. Since Dwarven Armor remains active until it is finally triggered, it is up to the Player to determine when is the best time to utilize their Power. Once a Power is spent, it is often unavailable again until certain criteria have been met, so make sure to time your abilities wisely.
