A lamp you make, rather… you GROW!
The Grow-It-Yourself lamp combines the art of making with the power of nature in a truly fascinating and sustainable way. We provide the material, tools, and know-how to empower you, the newest maker, with the ability to grow a lampshade from mushroom mycelium.
That’s right, mushroom mycelium, the roots of mushrooms!
It’s not just a lamp, it’s the future of design and YOU get to be a part of the experience in its earliest stages!
Featuring Ecovative’s mycelium technology, the GROW Lamp kit includes a bag of Mushroom® Material, a lampshade grow-form, step-by-step instructions, a UL-certified pendant light set, and an optional table stand.
Through this experiential process, you have been given the chance to become the biodesigner, connecting with the act of GROWING healthier, safer, and 100% earth-compatible products.
If growing a lamp from mycelium might not be your thing... we've got you covered with our already grown pendant and table lamps.
We have made growing your own lamp easy and accessible and with your pledge, we can take this biotechnology even further.
You don't need a green thumb, a background in biology, or to even enjoy eating mushrooms. The GROW Lamp is for all experience levels!
Oh, in case you were wondering - our Mushroom® Materials are guaranteed to grow!
Thanks to your support, your pledge will help us build step-by-step video tutorials that will go along with the new digital instructions - here are the current Grow-It-Yourself instructions.
Ecovative started 10 years ago with the idea that there are better ways to manufacture products by utilizing the tools that nature has given us, instead of toxic chemicals.
With our success as a packaging company, supplying packaging for companies like Dell and Gunlocke Furniture, we started receiving a ton of incredible and innovative ideas from enthusiastic fans and followers for ways that mycelium could change the world. In response, we developed a do-it-yourself version of our patented Mushroom® Material for designers, engineers, artists, and makers.
Danielle Trofe was one of the first Grow-It-Yourself users and for four years, she has been working with Mushroom® Materials alongside Ecovators Eben Bayer and Jeff Betts - hosting workshops in and around NYC, providing feedback to students and designers that are engaging with mycelium, and thinking up how we could bring her designs from the studio to a larger audience.
The GROW Lamp is the result of years of collaboration between Danielle Trofe, the Ecovative Team, and the early adopters of GROW Mushroom® Materials.
By working together, we have been able to bring this new material technology out of the factory, out of the studio, and into YOUR hands. We look forward to guiding you through every step of the process and hearing out your ideas and thoughts on new innovations using the magic of mycelium.
So you're probably wondering.... what exactly is mycelium?
Think of mycelium - the filamentous root structure of a mushroom and the technology behind this project - as nature's glue.
While a mushroom is in its early stages of growth, the mycelium is filling any space possible and binding together whatever it grabs onto.
Some cool facts about mycelium for the inevitable conversations that pop up when people ask about your new GROW Lamp….
- Individual strands of mycelium are called hyphae
- Inside one cubic inch of your GROW Lamp is up to 8 miles of continuous hyphae that form a matrix of mycelium binding together agricultural material
- It acts as a powerful, biological clean up crew - check out mycoremediation
- A mycelium network in Oregon is thought to be the largest living organism ever found!
- Plants and trees use mycelium to communicate as a sort of biological internet (think Avatar).
- Beer, wine, cheese, even medications, are made with fungi - learn more about fungi
Make it a hanging pendant or add the tool-free-assembly table stand made from sustainably sourced wood in Upstate NY to create a table lamp.
We're proud to partner with a local, sustainable wood mill to create our table lamp stands! Located in Upstate New York, Megan Offner and New York Heartwoods salvage aging trees and give them new life and purpose.
Danielle Trofe // Designer of the GROW Lamp
Danielle Trofe - pronounced “Trophy” (like you win!) - was the FIRST user of GROW mushroom materials, bringing her love for design, sustainability, and just looking at things with a different perspective together to create the first mushroom lighting collection. She is a Brooklyn resident, bicycle commuter and biomimicry specialist. Danielle’s favorite mushrooms are Oyster.
Eben Bayer // Co-Founder of Ecovative
Eben has spent a decade pioneering a new type of material science - one where nature and biology are used in place of synthetic chemicals as the co-founder of Ecovative. He built his off-grid, timber frame, micro-hydro powered home for his family in Upstate NY by hand (seriously!). His favorite mushroom is Ganoderma.
Jeff Betts // Head of all things GROW related at Ecovative
Jeff is an architecture grad with a fascination for materials in design, particularly this new field of biology in art & design. He is working towards building a community of GROW mushroom materials users and connecting mycelium tech to a broader audience. Jeff is not a fan of eating mushrooms.
Ken Lush // Master Fabricator & Designer at Ecovative
Between his days of designing mushroom products, you can find Ken kayaking, woodworking, and sailing back home in and around coastal Rhode Island. Ken is a fellow architecture grad and works closely with GROW users, providing them with the grow tips and trade secrets of mushroom product production. His favorite mushrooms are Golden Oyster.
