UNNERVED is a horror/thriller feature film currently in post-production. We shot the movie this past Fall in the beautiful state of Maine on a very low-budget with a crew of 5 people and 3 lead actors. It is currently being edited and we will soon be moving into the realm of scoring and sound work. Telling the full story would take away from my goal on keeping you on the edge of your seat. So with that in mind, I'm going to be light on the plot details.
Logline: After the mysterious death of their young son, a couple desperately flees to a remote lake house to escape the unrelenting haunting that is following them only to discover that this mysterious entity is still very much a part of their lives.

Why Am I Making UNNERVED?
I was 5 years old when it all began. It was the very first film I ever saw. My parents took me and my older brother to the theater to see a little movie called STAR WARS . It was love at first sight. It left an impression on me and forever changed my life. I became fascinated with the magical world of filmmaking and from that point forward, I knew I wanted to make movies.
I loved films so much that my brother and I started making our own Super-8 films. Yup we were those kids who remade their favorite movies while enlisting our entire neighborhood friends as actors. And when I discovered horror and suspense films, it opened up an entirely new dimension of storytelling for me. Now I had experienced FEAR while watching a movie. I'd never felt that feeling grip and take hold of me like that before and it really opened my eyes to the unique powers of cinema. This happened during the early 80s, so I begged my parents to let me watch films like Tobe Hooper's POLTERGEIST and David Cronenberg’s SCANNERS and after that, all I wanted to do was make a horror film! See a snippet of my version of SCANNERS in the video below:
The coolest part is that we (both my brother, Michael King, and I) ended up actually making films as grown ups. He was always the CG guy for our little science-fiction films (which meant adding lasers by hand, directly onto the Super-8 film -- see the video above) – and not coincidentally in his adult life he went on to work for Pixar, Disney Animation and LucasFilm among others.
I grew up to direct several feature films, the latest being the award-winning musical HOW DO YOU WRITE A JOE SCHERMANN SONG. This film was also supported by many generous Kickstarter backers a few years ago. Without their help, SCHERMANN SONG would not have been able to screen at all of the festivals that it did around the world, where we won over our audiences as well as such prestigious awards as Film of the Festival at Raindance (UK), the Cox Audience Award (Phoenix Film Festival), Best Picture (Idyllwild Cinemafest) and Best Director at the Flyway Film Festival – these were all very humbling moments of success for us, of course – and now SCHERMANN SONG is available worldwide.
One thing I take pride in is being able to take a genre I love and then I put my own spin on it. For the musical, I made SCHERMANN SONG. With your help, I can finish UNNERVED which is my take on the haunted house/ghost story and my first real uncompromised visit into the horror genre. It’s my vision of what I believe a horror film should be, based upon the films I loved growing up.
I set a goal for myself to create a film that will not only scare the pants off of you, but will involve characters that you’d truly want to care about. And to be honest, this combination is exceedingly rare in modern horror films. My favorite ones ( THE EXORCIST, THE ENTITY, THE FLY) are all about the people first. You really want to see them succeed. You need for them to live another day.
This film has a special place in my heart. It’s the hardest undertaking I’ve ever attempted in terms of filmmaking. Not only did I push myself mentally and physically creating this film, but both my cast and crew were definitely pushed to their limits as well. It was a very exhausting experience for everyone, but in a very good way. We truly became a band of brothers and sisters. Now this film has truly become an extended family affair. I wrote it with my brother and he plans to help with the computer graphics. My wife helped produce it from the very beginning. Many close friends (old and new) were brought in to collaborate with us on this. Please check out the FAQs section to see the cast & crew listing.
Even as a kid, I wanted to scare people. The idea of bringing a horror film to the big screen would make my dream a reality. In order to make that happen, it is being able to give it the final elements of sound, visuals and music to scare you. Most importantly, I want to craft a terrifying motion picture that will resonate with audiences.
My dream is almost there...
We need you. Help get us to the finish line and become part of the UNNERVED family.
Thank you for believing in our movie and us!

IS IT REALLY ALL OR NOTHING?
Yes it is! Every Kickstarter project must be fully funded before its time expires or NO MONEY CHANGES HANDS. And it is a great way for us to discover if there is true support for this movie before it even hits markets.

Risks and challenges
The major challenge we face is to make ourselves as visible and competitive as possible. This means that will strive to keep to our proposed timeline, however depending on the TLC needed to edit, sound mix and score the film, along with external factors (like film festival rules/schedules and signing a distribution deal) may alter it. We've tried to be conservative in picking estimated delivery dates, but we have no way of knowing what might hold up the film's release going forward.
Rest assured, our backers are always our priority. And per our previous campaigns, everyone has either been contacted and/or have been sent all their promised “thank you” rewards. We deliver what we say we will. :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Here is a full breakdown of our post-production costs:
Sound, Editing and Music ($8500): These elements are the cinematic experience -- and that goes double in importance with horror films. The bulk of our raised funds will pay for the artists and musicians that will bring the film's visceral experience to life.
Our fees to Kickstarter and Amazon ($800 to $1000 on $10,000 raised): In order to be able to raise funds on Kickstarter we pay a percentage of our pledges to these amazing institutions, for without them you wouldn’t be here to help us!
Shipping costs for Pledge Rewards Materials within the US ($700): All pledge rewards that qualify for shipping will be sent via US mail. These awards will be delivered at approximately the same time that the film is scheduled for release from distributors.
The Cost of Deliverables ($5000):
- We will hire a specialized company to transcribe the film into subtitles for international markets (or we don’t get to be worldwide!)
- We will cover the fees necessary to get the film rated (ex: PG-13, R) for the film to be released in the US and around the world.
- We will purchase Errors and Omissions Insurance. This is required by a distributor in order for us to be able to sell UNNERVED.
Live Orchestra ($5000): Composer Ken Lampl would be able to hire a live orchestra for a full day session to record his composed score for UNNERVED. How cool would that be?!
Computer Animation ($5000): We’ve used practical f/x as much as possible in UNNERVED, however if we're able to hire CG (computer-generated) artists, including my brother, it would give the film a heightened reality and would create authenticity for certain scenes. Thankfully my brother Mike and his team were able to donate their time and talent at no charge to me for some of my past feature films (including the Overture and "Write Me A Love Song" sequence from SCHERMANN SONG.)
However, brotherly love only goes so far! After 6 years of free labor, he and his team would get to be paid what they finally deserve.
Color Grading ($2500): We could hire a talented artist who would be able to polish the overall look of the film to suit the tone of the visual storytelling. Here's a video explaining the process: http://www.youtube.com/watch…
Festival Submission Fees ($500): While Film Festivals are a very worth while experience for both the filmmaker and the fans, unfortunately the cost of festival fees add up. Check out Moviemaker Magazine’s Top 50 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee: http://www.moviemaker.com/festivals/top-50-festivals-worth-entry-fee-moviemaker-releases-annual-list/
Marketing ($500): DVD screeners, publicity materials such as posters and postcards.
Kickstarter is a progressive method of growing community support, participation and awareness in artists, which allows us to raise money for films in a fun and organized way. For your kind and generous donation you can get some really cool "Thank You" gifts (ex: copy of the film, the soundtrack to more exclusive and limited rewards like sitting in with me during a sound mixing session) in return! Please check out the right hand side of this page to review all the rewards available. If one strikes your fancy, then GO AHEAD AND MAKE A PLEDGE. You won’t be charged a dime (or get the awesome gifts) unless we raise the minimum $10,000 by February 23rd 2014. Our total completion funds cost we hope to raise $28,500.
