About this project
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
THE GRIZZLY is one of six short films sponsored by Film Independent's Project Involve program. These shorts share a common theme of "California Stories," which examine what it means to belong to a particular community or cultural group in one of the most diverse states with immigrant populations. Film Independent is a non-profit organization that runs the Los Angeles Film Festival, Independent Spirit Awards and supports projects like ours. Project Involve is Film Independent's signature program, dedicated to increase cultural diversity in the film industry by cultivating the careers of underrepresented filmmakers. This showcase of shorts will premiere at a sidebar showcase during the Los Angeles Film Festival in June 2012.SYNOPSIS:
Every parent wants to ensure a better life for their children. Our film, THE GRIZZLY, is about a single mother who jeopardizes her job as nanny to fulfill her son's birthday wish.
The film tells a story about heroes that rarely get acknowledged -- single parents. Our main character, Araceli, struggles with a difficult question: how to be loyal to her job and loyal to her child, Ale. Araceli believes by fulfilling Ale's birthday wish, she will ensure her son grows to pursue, expect and have a better life.DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:
This script started as an exploration of the Los Angeles Bus Route — Line 576 — also known as the “Nanny Express.” The "Nanny Express," began shortly after the Watts riots to help with access to jobs, ferrying cooks, butlers and other household staff from the neighborhoods in South Los Angeles to employers in Beverly Hills, Westwood, Pacific Palisades, and Malibu. The original script, written by Allison Lee, was about a mother’s daily journey on the 576 bus and her goal to return home in time for her son’s birthday.
This initial idea inspired me to get involved as a director and clarify the dramatic elements hinted at in the script. I was raised by a single mother and familiar with the dilemma my mother faced — to be loyal to her family at the risk of her job and vice versa. It was important that the mother in our story, Araceli, face these same challenges. Our story is about the sacrifices a mother will make for the promise of her child’s future. Araceli believes by fulfilling her son, Ale’s birthday wish, she will encourage Ale, to pursue, expect, and receive more in life. We watch Araceli jeopardize her job for Ale’s happiness.
