What makes Special Crew so special?

Well, a number of things actually!

  • They often more slots on the Health/Strain track, allowing them to endure more
  • All special Crew also start with a positive trait printed straight onto their token. These traits very often are better versions of standard Traits, or unique ones specific to that class altogether
  • Some Event cards have unique outcomes that are only triggered when that Crew member is present.

So they'e definitely worth hiring, if you can find them!

Traits explained

We wanted to start using these updates to discuss the game mechanics in more depth, and for this update we'll be covering Traits! Whenever a Crew token is Drawn, they are also dealt a Positive and Negative Trait token. Traits bestow buffs and restrictions on the crew and help to create the Crew member's unique personality

Traits can have a big impact on your strategy; Clumsy crew will not work blue nodes, Brawler crew roll additional dice in combat, Lazy crew may only move 1 node per Order, Explorers may re rolls failed tests, Arrogant crew must always take the test if on Expeditions, Alcoholic crew will only ever visit the Inn to drink when in Port, Charismatic crew lower the cost of any services used...and that's just to name a few! With so many options, each crew member will be a unique character every time you play!

Skeffington +1 to know what this traits mean on the token

      "It's too expensive."
      Don't buy it.

Price is what I'd expect, 10 minis for variety of characters (good and bad ones), 20 event/exploration cards to add gameplay/replayability. Not sure if I'll bite, but seems reasonable (and I'd expect an all-in down the line to drop the overall cost of the add-ons a tiny bit....and I expect several more add-ons.. )

@John, I agree the cost is a little more than I'd expect for the content, though it does seem in line with Village Attacks being £16 (£20) for a pack of four miniatures with cards and tokens. I think further explanation of the content of the add-on would certainly help.

    5. Mathieu Simard on

Great characters there!! I want it, but it seems a bit expensive for what it is. I would be more interest in artbook orq expensions for add-ons and these additionnal minis for SG. Im sure it will bring more backers on this amazing project.

@Braden Miller - Just selecet "Manage your Pledge" at the top and add the amount of the Add-on to the overall amount of your pledge. There will be a Pledge Manager after the campaign is over where you will put in your address and select what you want to buy with the money that you have pledged. Shipping will also be added and paid at that time. You will also be able to add anything else that you did not add the money for during the campaign.

having seen your previous work on minis in a friend's 'Village Attacks' delivery, price seems fair for 10 quality minis to be quite honest, I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about, especially the folks saying these crew are stronger, who have clearly forgotten we're getting 8 special crew in the base game as well. its a mechanic, people.

I do also agree with others, this isn't really what I'd have expected as an add-on, but as SGs, at least the crew. Also, yeah £25 seems a tad much...

Looks cool, let's try and take it easy on the add-ons that are gameplay related ok? 😉

Hi, this is my first game I ever backed on Kickstarter. I really like what I’m seeing here with the new content add-ons. I’m just confused on how to add the expansion content into my pledge manager. It seems I’m only able to adjust the pledge amount. I just want to make sure I get all possible expansion content.

@AJ - Hi! I'm new to this company's campaigns, so this is new territory for me. All I have to compare it to is other games/projects. I guess I can sort of see it being similar to the Psychos and Freaks expansion pack to Dungeon Degenerates, but there's not really added game content... or have I missed something?

@John C, while I get what you mean about the add-on part this is effectively a small expansion. We're being given the option to pick it up slightly cheaper and earlier.

I mean it's the same as the additional Sins from The Others or the expansion packs from Village Attacks.

I'm going to have to agree with Will Baker and "Mashing." I can't quite see how this is an Add-On item (well, except that you have it as an Add-On).
      :)

If it adds an interesting character with a bit of a twist (more health and a printed trait) to the mix, isn't that really what feels like a Stretch Goal?

I could see an expansion with different rules and some added scenarios AROUND a "special crew" being an add-on, but that would also have some added content to expand the game as a whole.

I also think of Add-On items bringing luxe components (like special dice or painted minis THE ART OF... book) into the game.

I do like these characters, but they seem like they should be part of the game if you envision them being "better characters" for the game.

I dunno... still thinking about it... I will follow the comments on this one, though...

I also hope there aren't too many add ons... though this one does look awesome.

Yes please add Description to this tokens.

    16. Mashing

That is an expensive add-on for not a lot of content. At least in my opinion. The mini's look good, but not seeing the value at the moment.

    17. Phoibos on

How does the expansion affect difficulty? Those crew members seem strong, does including them not make the game easier?

What Skeffington said, if possible and these aren't teeny tiny tokens. Also, yes, why not selfless? Since it's a positive trait that kinda rings truer to me.

What are you going to do about conflicting traits? Like a pious unbeliever? And isn't clumsy and Dyspraxic the same thing?

Just a thought, but what if you had double sided traits? Like Unbeliever on the opposite side of believe, cowardly on the opposite side of courageous, etc?

Will we be able to pay for add-ons in the Pledge Manager? I can't justify adding it now but by the time the pledge manager is live my budget might be able to handle it.

    27. Skeffington on

I like these crews and the traits a lot :) However would it be possible to add something to the trait tokens that explains what the trait does without having to repeatetly look it up? Thinking of some sign language like in Cyclades for example...
