Gameplay spotlight: Accomplishment cards
As pre production draws to a close and we eagerly await news from the factories, we wanted to start doing a little series of updates about the various gameplay elements of Endure the Stars, and we've decided to start with the Accomplishment deck!
What is the Accomplishment deck?
The Accomplishment deck is a series of cards that give each Survivor an optional objective that is personal to them. All Accomplishment objectives are optional and do not affect the main mission objectives. Optional objectives can unlock stat boosts that can help to snatch victory on the toughest of missions, but they may also require Survivors to act in a selfish manner, putting themselves and others in potentially dangerous situations!
How do they work?
Each Survivor is dealt 1 Accomplishment card at random at the beginning of the mission. There are 3 main components to the cards:
1. Flavour text - A small sentence or two that helps to give the objective some context.
2. Optional objective - This is what the Survivor must do to complete the objective. All optional objective criteria must be met within a single game round and do not continue to accumulate into the next round. For example, if the objective is to kill at least 3 enemies, killing 1 in the first round and 2 in the second doesn't count. This really helps to add another layer of strategy without overly complicating things. Book keeping is something we have very much tried to avoid creating in Endure the Stars.
3. Reward (upside down) - This is the Survivors reward for completing the objective.
What happens once I complete the objective?
Once you've completed the objective, simply rotate the card 180 degrees so that the reward section is right side up. We've constantly been striving for a great balance of depth and simplicity with ETS, and I personally love little designs like this. It's instantly clear that you've completed your objective but no book keeping or extra tokens are required!
How do I use my reward?
Rewards can be activated at any time during your Survivors turn, and their effects last until the end of the current round.
So there you have it, that's the Accomplishment deck. Up next, the Resolve deck!
