Hi, my name is Daniel – some of you know me as the creator of ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG, and face of Grim & Perilous Studios. I am a level 41 husband/father/raconteur, and have worked in digital advertising for 14 years. Were you to compare me to a character on the show Mad Men, basically I'm Ken Cosgrove: biz-dev guy on the streets/author in the sheets. Much like Cosgrove, I am a writer when I'm off the clock.
I spent five years writing the brobdingnagian (read: mammoth) 688-page book you know as ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG. I set up a Kickstarter, nearly two years ago to the day, to make it a reality.
Following a very successful Kickstarter & CrowdOx phase, a feature article on Forbes, and a 3-month climb to DriveThruRPG's Platinum Rated top 25 products, it drove over 62,000 copies of ZWEIHÄNDER moved worldwide to-date.
ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG also took home two golds in the ENnie Awards for Best Game and Product of the Year at GenCon 2018.
Turns out, there's a market for world-agnostic, gritty D100 tabletop RPGs that doesn't rhyme with "Goonquest" or "Warslammer".
And after a stroke of inspiration, I began writing another book. Say hello to MAIN GAUCHE.

We estimate that MAIN GAUCHE will come in between 300 to 400 pages after we finalize layout, in full, old school black & white glory. Like its predecessor ZWEIHÄNDER, it will be illustrated cover-to-cover by Dejan Mandic.

Once funded, there will be two physical hardback versions of the rulebook – the Offset Print Edition & the Print-on-Demand Edition.
PHYSICAL VERSION #1: OFFSET PRINT EDITION: The offset print edition of MAIN GAUCHE will be in 8.5x11 format, which we anticipate to be shipped by December 2018.
It will be printed on 70# clay-matte paper, offset quality with soft-touch matte cover, smythe binding (section sewn) and interior ribbon. This is the best version you can purchase, of collector's item quality. Its materials will resemble the offset print edition of ZWEIHANDER Grim & Perilous RPG from our first Kickstarter, which you can preview here:
PHYSICAL VERSION #2: PRINT-ON-DEMAND EDITION: The print-on-demand edition of MAIN GAUCHE will be in 8.5x11 format and fulfilled by DriveThruRPG, which we anticipate to be shipped by December 2018.
It will be printed on 70# heavyweight paper with glossy cover and perfect bound. This version will withstand consistent use, with good binding and strong paper weight. Its materials will resemble the print-on-demand edition of ZWEIHANDER Grim & Perilous RPG from DriveThruRPG, which you can preview here (unboxing by Runeslinger):

DIGITAL VERSION #1: EARLY ACCESS PDF: Once funded, we will have an Early Access PDF. This is a fully 100% playable version of MAIN GAUCHE, without the illustrations. The PDF will be made available 30 days after the conclusion of the Kickstarter, direct from DriveThruRPG.
DIGITAL VERSION #2: FULLY ILLUSTRATED PDF: Once funded, we will also have a Fully Illustrated PDF: This is a fully 100% playable version of the MAIN GAUCHE, and will resemble the aforementioned hardback versions. The PDF will be made available to backers a few weeks before we begin shipping physical books, direct from DriveThruRPG.
We have several Stretch Goals to be unlocked throughout the campaign. Once unlocked, all Stretch Goals can be purchased as Add-Ons when surveys are sent out. We've dropped a few visual clues - can you guess what they are?
Should we hit our funding goal, can use Add-Ons when surveys are sent out by our pledge manager. Stay tuned as Stretch Goals are revealed to learn more about what Add-Ons will appear! Note that the Beggar's Bowl pledge level cannot Add-On (as that would cheat people who paid full price beforehand).
We will also be offering most of our print-on-demand products from DriveThruRPG at a significantly-reduced rate to you. Add Ons marked "POD -" before the title will be printed and shipped out from DriveThruRPG. After receiving your survey from our pledge manager, you'll be issued a code from DriveThruRPG at the email address you included in the survey. You will be required to pay $1.00 USD, plus your own shipping charges.
However, we have made certain to reduce the prices so that it's fair and economical for those both here in the US and overseas. POD products have very little mark-up, so that Kickstarter backers are guaranteed the absolute best price there is on these POD products.

The offset print edition of ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG will be in 8.5x11 format, which we anticipate to be shipped by December 2018.
It will be printed on 70# clay-matte paper, offset quality with soft-touch matte cover, smythe binding (section sewn) and interior ribbon. This is the best version you can purchase, of collector's item quality. Its materials will resemble the offset print edition of ZWEIHANDER Grim & Perilous RPG from our first Kickstarter. This is only for the original cover by Jussi Alarauhio. It will include all errata, grammatical fixes and printed in the good ol' USA.
You need only add +$65 to your pledge level to pick up the physical+pdf edition.
A retailer pledge level is also now available for verified brick-and-mortar locations, sold in combined cases of 5 ZWEIHÄNDER offset copies and 3 MAIN GAUCHE copies. Cases cannot be split.
MORE STRETCH GOALS TO COME!
We've been through the hellscape that is shipping with our previous Kickstarter, and returned as masters of the art of shipment. We have a reliable printer who will package books up in protected boxes, bubble wrap and water-resistant tape.
In order to keep things running smoothly and to avoid the challenges we had from our previous Kickstarter, you will be responsible for your own shipping charges. Packages are expected to be shipped from the United States. A few caveats:
OFFSET PRINT EDITIONS: When you receive your survey from our pledge manager, you'll pay for shipping based on the number of books you bought at that time. Shipping is charged at-cost – we make zero dollars on shipping.
- US-based addresses: Shipping will be done through USPS using Media Mail, and includes tracking. Simple, and easy. We anticipate this cost to come in around $5.00 USD.
Canada, Mexico & International addresses: Shipping will be done through USPS using Priority Mail International Flat Rate. Customs paperwork will be included in the shipment, and includes tracking. Your cost will vary by country, but our average cost to mail international from our last Kickstarter came in around $27 USD. You are responsible for any customs charges, but we will value the books at $5 USD gifts in case your local custom agent asks for payment.
PRINT-ON-DEMAND EDITIONS: After receiving your survey from our pledge manager, you'll be issued a code from DriveThruRPG at the email address you included in the survey. You will be required to pay $1.00 USD, plus your own shipping charges. DriveThruRPG and its sister network has print-on-demand facility partners all over the world, so shipping costs will depend solely on where you live. Based on our sales with ZWEIHÄNDER to-date at DriveThruRPG, the average cost worldwide is $10.98 USD. You can also look at estimated shipping costs for Standard Shipping by country here.
SHIPPING OUTSIDE THE US: We are trying to lock down a relationship now with an overseas drop shipper. Should this occur, we will notify everyone prior to surveys being sent out.

We here at Grim & Perilous Studios are firm believers in upfront, honest communication. Should anything change or evolve, you'll be the first to know. Outside of the Updates and Comments section on Kickstarter, we will be regularly posting progress notes with the community over at GrimAndPerilous.com, on Facebook and Twitter.
Additionally, I will be sharing my experience with the development process for MAIN GAUCHE regularly on Kickstarter. As an example, I released over 95 updates during the last Kickstarter prior to release, and remained engaged with fans across a multitude of RPG forums. Some said this was too much, but I am a firm believer in community engagement: over-communication is better than little communication, and you deserve perfect clarity, particularly when you've invested your hard-earned dollars into making someone else's dream a reality.

BEHIND THE SCENES
This isn't our first rodeo. We have our printer and shipper already locked in – we just need to collect the funds to get some additional artwork lined up, to pay our editor and to get the first print run going.
One of other biggest pitfalls we’ve seen with other failed tabletop RPGs on Kickstarter is that the product isn’t completely written or playtested before launch. We committed to the ideal beforehand that we’d not bring MAIN GAUCHE to Kickstarter until we felt 100% confident it’s ready for the public. We also didn’t want acts of chaos gods, writer’s block or other personal matters to interfere with getting the product out the door to our fans. We have purposefully avoided this by spending the last two years writing and playtesting the heck out of the game.
We've also cemented a great relationship with our local printer in Missouri (coincidentally, we work with the same printer Larry Elmore and Mike Ploog uses). That means we print our limited edition books in the United States. This ensures the best quality control money can buy; one which you simply cannot get by working with less expensive Asia-based print shops. Our pick/pack/ship distribution center is literally 4.3 miles from my driveway to the warehouse. We're incredibly fortunate to have great partners, and these relationships will ensure a smooth transition from Kickstarter, to print, to dependable packaging and shipment to you.
The real risk, however, is that we go unfunded. While we don’t anticipate this happening, there is a backup plan to get the Early Access Edition PDF out as a digital download and print-on-demand through DriveThruRPG.com should all else fail. Contingency is a 6th level evocation spell, and we're high enough level to cast it thrice daily.
