About

GriefGuide: Interactive Self-Counseling

A project by Haley Harris-Bloom and Rex Lundstrom

After a loved one has passed, is there something you can do day-to-day to work through the tragedy and take care of your emotional health? Most would agree that counseling with a professional is a tried and true method, and we are no exception.

Unfortunately, few people have the time or resources to do so. Even if one can go to therapy, it’s not something that happens every day. So what can be done on the other days?

While there are many accessible resources such as websites, blogs, podcasts, this is a mixed bag and it is hard to distinguish what is useful.

That is where GriefGuide comes in. GriefGuide is the first interactive self-counseling app for the bereaved. It is designed to provide thoughtful and personal daily writing prompts which each target key aspects of the grieving process.

GriefGuide offers a space for reflecting about your grief daily. With inlaid grief education and daily writing prompts, your responses will feel meaningful and will help you clarify the emotions, feelings, and physical symptoms that are natural to go through when grieving—this will help the process of grieving by thoughtfully confronting all aspects of grief. There is an emphasis on self-care throughout this journey which includes exercise, diet, socializing, sleep, and gratitude.

By having a daily platform to pay homage to your loved one, GriefGuide will spark your healing process for the day, week, and months to come.

Creator and motivation

My name is Haley and I am a nurse in the emergency department. While I often deal with tragedy at work, the past few years I have had trauma in my own life. My two cousins, who are brothers, and my childhood best friend all died within a few years of each other. They were all in their 20’s. The process of our families grieving and trying to cope with the loss of these boys has been heart wrenching.

Since these deaths I wanted to learn the best way to grieve, because it is such a daunting task. I have devoted the past year to studying grief counseling handbooks, grief theory and evidence based practice for grieving. During my research, I thought of my uncle and my best friend’s mom trying to find the right place to look for guidance through their daily pain. The amount of grief websites, books and blogs is overwhelming. With close to 13 million new people grieving each year in the United States alone, there is a need for a modern day, easily accessible solution.

That’s why I am creating GriefGuide. I have seen and felt the pain and devastation of losing a loved one. I want to help others navigate this devastating journey of grief with mindfulness, education, and a consistent platform to explore these complicated emotions.

Why $50,000?

Simple apps are becoming affordable to create, and it’s not out of the ordinary for your average person to fund one with their own money. So what is the 50K for?

  • With a modest budget it is far too easy to sacrifice quality for affordability. We want GriefGuide to be more than a barebones functional app so you can focus on your grief with technological ease.
  • Hitting this goal will ensure that there is a strong user base in order for us to have a ability to fund troubleshooting, updates, and keeping GriefGuide as user friendly as possible for you.
  • This app is to be designed for you, and it needs some key features that will bring the cost up: functionality across devices, a personal account and easy login, guaranteed security of your information, and an interface that invites you to use it.
  • We want to continue interacting with users and to spend lots of time making this app live up to its potential. The more users of GriefGuide there are, the more we will be able to tailor it for our community!

App Breakdown

The app will be downloadable for free in the app store, and upon creating your account, the first two weeks of prompts will also be free for trial. After that you'll be granted the option for a monthly or discounted annual subscription.

Each day will bring its own unique prompt which targets a different aspect of grieving. You will have the option to enable notifications to help prompt your reflections for the day. Each prompt is designed to be answered in a few minutes or less, but there is potential to elaborate into great depth when you feel up for it.

Here are a few sample prompts:

  • Grieving is painful and can take a long time. Often we try to avoid pain, but anything that gets in the way of feeling this pain will prolong the grieving period. Take a moment to think of and write down things you do to avoid feeling pain and grieving.
  • Write about a time your loved one was courageous. How can you embody this courage in your daily life?
  • We experience grief throughout our lives even at young ages. Events such as losing a stuffed animal as a child are actually grief events. Think back and describe an episode of grieving that you experienced as a child. How did the adults around you respond to your loss?

Risks and challenges

The challenge will be to create a beautifully working app within budget! A lot of research and preparation has gone into GriefGuide, but ultimately, it hasn't been made yet. We will do everything in our power to have a great app to help your grieving process by May 2019.

Another challenge is to try and tackle the vast nature of grieving. There are many cases of complicated grief that are very complex. Some of these types of grief such as traumatic, disenfranchised, or multiple deaths may fit into this category. Please be aware that GriefGuide does not cover this vastness at this time. Please reach out to a professional for further help.

There will be red flag warnings as to when to seek professional help as well as a crisis resource page. The prompts and check ins will not be monitored by GriefGuide. If you or someone you know needs immediate help please call 911, go to your nearest emergency room, or call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
