About this project
WHAT IS THIS PROJECT?
'Jesus Days, 1978-1983' is a photo-book, a collection of Kodachromes that I shot during my twenties. At that time, I was a Campus Minister for a large American evangelical student movement AND a closeted gay. As such, 'Jesus Days' is both a visual diary of a young man in conflict with his faith and sexuality and a memoir, recalled by that now out gay man, thirty years later.
WHY A BOOK?
The best way to show these photographs and tell this story is in the form of a book. The images stand together united as one body of work from one period of time. I plan to make a fine hardback book that reproduces the Kodachromes with great accuracy, producing a book of Kodacolor brilliance. For the last five years, I have edited these photographs down to around 80 images and have made high res scans on the incredible Imacon Flextight scanner. Some of these images can be seen at Vice Magazine online.
BUT WHY THIS BOOK?
I believe that 'Jesus Days' is a photo-book that has not been seen before and can not be found on book shelves. The photographs sprang from the imagination of a boy in the closet and the images show the world as he saw it and felt it. The photos are the document of the 70s and early 80s and look at American evangelicalism from a unique vantage point, not as an outsider but one of an insider.
$25,000 is required to turn 'Jesus Days' into a book. Much of the expense has already been carried by the photographer (myself) who has already made all the scans and spent the countless hours restoring these Kodachromes to their former glory. In consultation with the graphic designer, Riley Hooker, we have concluded that this amount is necessary to fulfill our vision. This is not a print on demand book, the quality of which would present the photographs, but would fail to fully show their beauty.
