A series of large art pieces of classic Hollywood icons spray-painted on top of different materials that relate to their art & careers.
Hello Kickstarters! Thanks for taking a look at my project, hope you find it interesting and maybe even throw a few bucks towards making it happen.
WHY AM I DOING THIS?
I really love movies. The magic of film has become my life. I've also always loved the days of old when the film industry seemed to have such charm. I'm hoping to be able to give a little of that back to Los Angeles by making and exhibiting pieces that really show the true essence of the cinematic passions that older film icons had.
WHAT AM I DOING?
I'm making a series completely dedicated to further immortalizing classic and contemporary film icons through collage and spray-paint stencil The pieces consist of a decoupage collage of materials that relate to the specific persons career, interests or art. (For example, Alfred Hitchcock is on a collage of old 1800-1970 murder and mystery headlines and articles on newspaper.) Then a custom stencil is spray-painted on top. What you get is a fantastic mix of wonderful artists layered over the things that truly interested them.
The series is going to be exhibited right here in Los Angeles, and will initially consist of 11 pieces based on a few directors and stars:
- Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Woody Allen, John Ford, Stanley Kubrick, Clint Eastwood, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton
Spray-painting the prototype:
HOW WILL I DO IT?
I made each piece in Downtown Los Angeles. Nothing used is prefabricated, I custom print each article and headline on newsprint, I design and print the stencils, custom-cut, custom painted... everything is done by hand and is original. But, the proof is in the pudding as they say. So I spent a great deal of time printing and cutting and pasting and painting and what I ended up with was my prototype of Hitchcock. The piece is 55"x75" and it's Hitch spray-painted over old real murder and mystery headlines from the US and the UK between the years 1800-1970 (Jack the Ripper, The Zodiac Killer, etc.)
Here is the Hitchcock Piece after the first round of spray painting before finishing (this is an actual prototype at 55"x75"):
WHAT IS THE MONEY FOR?
The money is going to be used to cover the costs of making the pieces and putting them in a temporary frame for exhibition. Each of the large 10 pieces requires a lot of materials. Any extra money over the initial goal will be used to make additional pieces. Here is a rough list of the materials used per piece:
- Backing material or Canvas, framing materials, 1+ can of spray paint, Gesso, Tape, 2 Cans of Mod Podge, Gloss, UV Sealer, Two 28x80 sheets of paper and roughtly 12 custom printed 20x30 newsprint sheets.
I think this is the minimum amount of money I'd need to do an entire first set of all 10 to a degree that they would be gallery quality, so that's what I'm striving for.
And that's it.... feel free to email me with any questions at firstname.lastname@example.org and thanks for checking my project out. With a little help and a lot of luck, I'll soon be gluing and spraying.
