About

Huzzah!
We want to start a revolution! Not with guns, pitchforks or militias, but with a little idea and some big word of mouth.

But first, let's get on the same page
Let's face it, as a nation, we kinda suck when it comes to energy consumption. The energy we work so hard to pay for is harming the planet. We use a loads of dirty energy and we pay a premium for it. We need to develop a few more solutions to this problem that go beyond CFL light bulbs and programmable thermostats. We need small changes the bring big results.

We need simple steps that every household in America and around the world, can take right now to save money, conserve energy, and reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions!

We need steps that people can take without spending money to save money.

We need simple stuff!

Electricity use in America
At the moment, we're producing an average of 10,656 kWh of electricity for each of the the roughly 110 million households in America. This electricity is costing each household about $1,280 per year and produces about 7.5 tons of carbon dioxide in the same amount of time.

Producing the electricity for Americans is an expensive process costing a whopping $134 billion dollars to produce the 1.1 trillion kWhs of electricity. To top that off, the process produces an estimated 791 million tons of carbon dioxide - a primary greenhouse gas.

Whether or not you believe on global warming, there's plenty of reasons to participate. Aside from reduced pollution and carbon dioxide, there's money to be saved too.

What can we do?
We're convinced we've got a really simple and effective way to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases while also saving every participating household a bit of money. Our idea won't cost you a nickel and you could start tomorrow if you want!

Here it is: Be "green" for one day. Or to snaz it up a bit - "Green One Day".

Green One Day is the simple idea of being green once a week, once a month, or once a year. Whichever you decide, on this day or days you're being green, just turn off all the electricity in your household - that can safely be turned off. Things like lights, TV, Computers, Radio, ovens, microwaves, washer/dryer, clocks, radios, etc. You don't need to turn off the heat, the fridge, the smoke alarms, respirators, etc - just everything that you can safely turn off! You decide how much you want to unplug.

We think that in doing so, you could probably save as much energy as if you had purchased a hybrid vehicle or solar hot water system for your home. The great thing is you don't need to spend thousands (or anything) to do this!

Unplugging is something everyone can do - starting now! And so, we want to start an unplugging revolution of people zealous for taking one day a week, month or year to save energy, money and the planet.

Here's the part where we ask for your help (and you say yes, right?)
To do so, we've been working on quite a web site to offer some free, robust tools for promoting this revolution. We want to use the power of social networking and viral marketing to change the course of energy consumption in this country and beyond. And we think we can do it.

We've got a heckuva web service planned that will allow "unpluggers" to join ranks with another to re-volt (yeah, stupid pun, sorry). Users will be able to report and track their unplugging success, schedule reminders for their upcoming unplugged days, and maybe even engage in some friendly, world-wide competition to see who's saving the most energy by unplugging.

Further, we're aiming to create a tool for users to begin tracking their energy use and compare it to others with similar demographics. It's been said that when people start tracking their electricity usage, they often see a 10-15% reduction just from their new awareness! We'll drink to that.

Wanna be a "Seed User"
Okay, so maybe that sounds weird. But the gist of it is this. We're going to capture which user refers others to become an GreenOneDay user, plus who referred them so we can see who the "seed" user was where it all began.

That means that those users who started early are sure to have a large impact, which we'll track and show through an unpluggers "leader board" (assuming you're cool with that first). Seed users will be able to test their social networking prowess in helping the planet. The backers of this project will be the first folks invited to become formal unpluggers - the seed stock, and therefore will have maximum impact as they begin inviting others.

If you've got ideas, questions, or comments, we'd love to hear them.
