**** UPDATE MARCH 19: ****
These DVDs will be professionally replicated, packaged and sealed when purchased separate from the VHS.
All previous and future purchases of the VHS will also include a FREE copy of the DVD.
Before GWAR, before Slipknot, hell even before Nintendo there was GREEN JELLO (aka Green Jelly), the Godfathers of punk rock puppets.
Born on the same year I was, 1981. They finally hit their chart-topping fame in 1993 and were featured in the soundtracks of many films and games.
By that time they had been through 71 band members which grew in numbers since then to presently over 600 including members like Danny Carey & Maynard James Keenan from Tool. Karen Black, Weird Al Yankovic. Hulk Hogan. Members of Kiss, GWAR, Cannibal Corpse, Testament, Fishbone, Skid Row, Danzig.
... And me.
Hi I'm Rob Gabriele. Green Jello superfan and member #363. I discovered Green Jello on MTV at the peak of their fame. I was 11 years old. I began making short films and claymation immediately afterwards, I also started playing drums that year, both paying hobbies I have been enjoying since my childhood which I credit deeply to the influence of Green Jello.
During that time I was old enough to know damn well that Los Angeles was long distance from Canada but I called the GREEN JELLO HOTLINE and left messages every day. Back then they would have a new recording each day which answered the questions fans asked the previous day. I called 20 times daily until the bill came. It took all summer to pay back that $400. That was my first contact with Bill Manspeaker.
20 years later I notice Bill Manspeaker on Facebook and we start chatting. He liked some of my artwork and had me make him some new flyers for his tour and new merchandise. I was flattered and honored. Months later he described his plans to do what no rock band has done before. He was setting up a "franchise" band in every state & province. And he needed one for Ontario. I was his man.
It's been 3 years since I joined, playing 1-2 gigs annually. This year will be different. I booked a four-day tour of Ontario. I'm ecstatic.
We will be filming the ENTIRE tour and professionally recording audio from one of the gigs. The release will be 60-90min limited to ONLY copies of VHS and will NOT BE AVAILABLE AFTER THIS CAMPAIGN.
That's right, the ONLY way to get a copy will be HERE on Kickstarter.
The VHS tape will include full color art and 8x7 poster inserted exactly like the two original VHS releases Cereal Killer & 333.
Why limit release to VHS?
Green Jello was the first band ever to release a video tape before releasing the companion "soundtrack" album. That's what they are known for, the videos. Since the demise of tape media collectors feel nostalgia in that rare Thrift Store find that brings them back to their childhood. We now collect vinyl, laserdiscs, and Betamax realizing these first printings were the only printing ever. And this tape is the same. A timeless piece of history that will be printed ONCE. Of course the digital version is also available to those who buy the VHS.
Releasing to DVD would be much cheaper!
But we're not. This is a collectors item for true fans.
This is not just a concert film and this is much more than a home video. I plan on bringing this experience to you from brushing our teeth day one to the end of the tour when I drive Bill to the airport. All footage will be 100% new and unseen.
Rather than the film focusing on the live show (which of course will have it's very prominent moments throughout the movie), this film will feature the raw behind the scenes of a no-budget tour and the men who endure for their love of the band (and the Wives who proudly follow). Candid interviews with band members, fans, and promoters, and most importantly a 4-day interview with the man himself, Bill Manspeaker who has stories of a life you could never believe existed.
For $5000 I will release a very compelling piece of art that will journal our travels and the obstacles along the way. The goal to dig into the mind of Bill and scoop out his amazing tales of rock-stardom while tapping into the lives of the band members who took time from their jobs and families (with little to no compensation) to make this tour happen.
Let's be realistic. $5000 only gets us so far.
The budget is low because the costs are low. The budget will NOT go towards transportation, accommodations, music licensing, color correction & transfer fees, film festival submission fees, etc.
This is for the fans BY the fans. And once it's gone, it's gone.
I have kept the goal as low as I could while still being able to release a well-produced film with great audio. Clearly the quality & post-production time depends on the amount of funding received. Here I have narrowed down what I can do and what I will need:
Aside from booking the gigs, managing the Ontario franchise band, and being Bill's chauffeur during the tour, I am providing my services as director, interviewer, cameraman, editor, graphic design & photoshop, promotions, research, webmaster & web hosting, animations, merch printer, and of course performer. All while working my 50 hour/week job as Fiber Optic Splicer. I am using vacation days for the tour, and NOT paying myself from the film's budget. All my personal expenses will be covered by myself.
The higher the budget, the less I have to do myself. Therefore speeding post-production time.
$5000 will get the project started with:
- Rental of two Sony HVR-A1U HDV Camcorders & three GoPro camcorders for one week
- Professional live audio recording, mixing and mastering for one gig
- Hard Drives for storage
- Camera crew, 5 cameramen minimum
- Provincial taxes & Kickstarter's 10% tax
- VHS duplication, cover and poster professionally printed and folded.
Because I am doing the assembly & shrink wrap, standalone Dual Deck VCR Dubbing in home myself I estimate the release date for the film to be May-July 2016. However what we REALLY want is...
$2000 above our goal;
- Extra songs mixed
- VHS copies will be professionally dubbed and packaged by a replication company. Their quote for 100 tapes were $1700.
This will significantly speed up post-production and move the release date to an estimated Jan-Mar 2016.
$3000 above our goal;
- Every VHS order receives a free additional T-shirt of your choice of the 6 designs.
- Extra songs mixed
- Additional DVCAM rental
- Extra hard drive storage
- Extra Crew
ORANGE KRUNCH full-body costume is available as a reward!!!

Risks and challenges
Every project I have ever worked on has had absolutely zero budget. No, I don't mean spending a few bucks here and there, I mean NO budget whatsoever.
Not only do I find excitement in starting with nothing I feel I thrive. I pride myself in being able to find ways over hurdles and hit the ground running each time. I am able to, through film, tell a story and invoke emotion and laughter using almost nothing. Like a beautiful sculpture made of dog waste.
I once managed to shoot and edit an entire music video even though band didn't show up. Neither did the camera crew with their cameras. The actors & crew quickly grabbed their phones and home camcorders and started filming. We got it done.
I am being realistic in expecting things to go wrong, that is simply what happens. I live life with a plan B always in mind. This is a documentary of a journey, all rides either up or down will be documented.
In an absolute worse case scenario where Bill doesn't make it across the border to play the shows, the recording will be postponed for 2-3 months until more shows are booked.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
