The Haul-a-Day allows an entire household to be human powered with one size-adjustable bike. There are several great cargo bikes on the market that focus on carrying very heavy loads with one strong rider in mind. The Haul-a-Day enables riders of all sizes to enjoy an agile ride with a cargo capacity rivaling the heaviest cargo bikes.
Our early testers say that the Haul-a-Day is a world-changing bike. Your support will help us make more Haul-a-Days available faster at a better price while keeping production in our Oregon factory.
The Haul-a-Day is unique:
- Adjustable in size, it fits riders 4'6" to 6'4" (135 cm to 195 cm) so friends and the whole family can ride it.*
- Extremely light and agile starting at a breakthrough 32 pounds (most cargo bikes start at 40 to 50 pounds or beyond), its compact size makes it easy to store. It's a great everyday bike when you aren't hauling anything, and a fine expedition touring bike or tour leader's bike.
- Much more suitable for smaller, shorter, and lighter riders than any other cargo bike. The standard model is rated for riders up to 220 pounds (100 kg) and cargo loads up to 200 pounds (91 kg) and a frame upgrade is available for up to a 260-pound rider and 300-pounds of cargo.
- Built with 20" wheels front and rear: the center of gravity is lower providing greater ride stability; the maintube of the frame has a low step-over height for easy mounting and dismounting even with heavy loads; the wheels accelerate more easily from a stop without compromising ride quality.
- Stands upright on its rear end for easy compact storage.
- Fits on many transport racks: bus, car, and train.

- Built by hand in Eugene, Oregon USA! Building bikes using lean manufacturing in the USA allows us to listen to our customers and incorporate improvements into every new bike we build.
* The adjustable main tube has four size options and the handlebar stem and seat mast can adjust several inches.

Why are we making a new cargo bike?
The Haul-a-Day is truly a customer-inspired product. Originally, our Co-Founder Alan Scholz developed the Haul-a-Day for his friend Shane MacRhodes. Shane leads the Safe Routes to School program for our local Eugene 4J school district, and his young family of five relies on bikes for almost all their transportation. Shane wanted a cargo bike to go along with the 4J's Bike Friday training fleet. This "instructor bike" would fit people of all sizes plus carry things like traffic cones, a bike pump, and tools, with the potential to carry a student and another bike.
Once Shane started riding his Haul-a-Day and wrote about it on his blog, people started coming out of the woodwork. They also wanted a lighter and more adjustable cargo bike! We have made a number of improvements to the design in response to customer feedback. Unlike bike brands using overseas manufacturing facilities which can take months or years to respond to customer’s needs, using lean manufacturing techniques, we can rapidly take a good idea and implement it into the next bike off the line.
The people who have been attracted to the Haul-a-Day are an inspiring group of individuals, each courageously choosing to use Human Power in their daily lives in all sorts of amazing ways. It's our passion to support these people by offering tools that empower them to live this way.
Who is Bike Friday?
Bike Friday (Green Gear Inc.) is a family business filled with individuals who live life with loving dedication focused on a healthy sustainable lifestyle, and providing tools to help others do the same. Green Gear was founded in 1992 by brothers Hanz and Alan Scholz, who wanted to build empowering lifestyle tools in the U.S. They shared a deep love for the bicycle, and a belief in the freedom and adventure of cycling. They also believed in lean manufacturing and used those principles to set up the factory for mass customization. Green Gear designed and built the Bike Friday line of high performance custom travel bikes for the last 22 years -- building each bike by hand to custom order in our Eugene, Oregon shop. Today Alan Scholz is still working in the company and his daughter Hanna Scholz is the President of Green Gear Inc.
Alan started his first family bike shop as a teenager in North Dakota. He later went on to co-found Burley Design Cooperative, initially to make bike bags. The Burley Trailer came out of Alan's desire to transport his daughters, Hanna and Fraeda, without needing to own or use a car.
Hanna grew up in a Burley Trailer, and as the President of Green Gear she continues to express the love of human-powered transportation she shares with her father. The Scholz family, and our incredibly talented team of about 30 employees, is dedicated to the mission to build a better tomorrow by offering individual solutions for transportation, personal oil independence and health
Why do we need your help?
While most bike manufacturing is overseas, custom building bicycles in the USA is challenging and has not resulted in profits margins necessary to develop this new product. We have been sustained with the passion and commitment of our customers and employees and are determined to press forward with this exciting new lifestyle tool if you’ll make the journey with us.
We are currently building Haul-a-Days one at a time with long lead times for delivery in the 400 square foot research and development “skunk works” area of our shop. The requests for accessories and delivery timing that families and individuals are asking for exceeds our capacity without funding for improvements.
Meeting our basic goal of $45,000 will enable us to increase our production capacity to deliver the first 250-300 Haul-a-Days toward our big goal of delivering 1,000 Haul-a-Days in 2015. Funds from the basic goal will be used to:
- Build initial tooling and infrastructure for efficient Haul-a-Day production, bringing our production capacity to ~25 Haul-a-Days per month.
- Train production team members from our other product lines in the skills and techniques necessary to produce Haul-a-Days and accessories using the new tooling level at the volume of 25 bikes per month.
- Purchase Haul-a-Day components in larger quantities to reduce cost.
- Build some Haul-a-Days into inventory for fast delivery to customers not needing a custom configuration.
- Deliver rewards to our Kickstarter campaign backers!
Raising $65,000 will enable us to order a container of bicycle components directly from the manufacturers. This will help us reduce cost to the point where we can afford to manage a dealer network for Haul-a-Days and make it possible for people to test-ride Haul-a-Days at a local dealer.
Meeting our stretch goal of $100,000 enables us to:
- Hire or re-assign and train 4-5 people full-time to Haul-a-Day production, bringing us to the production level necessary to deliver 1000 Haul-a-Days in 2015. The decision to hire or re-assign depends on how busy our existing production team is.
- Finish building the tools and infrastructure to set up a complete and efficient production area.
Meeting our super stretch goal of $120,000 enables us to:
- Finish development of much-requested additions and accessories like an electric assist option, child's trailer bike attachment and several others. We have one prototype of each but no specialized tooling or funds for beta testing.
- Start development of a child's back tandem conversion attachment.
Meeting our Super Super streatch goal of $225,000 enables us to:
- Deliver all the Kickstarter Haul-a-Days at least a month earlier than promised.
- Offer a $999 8spd Haul-a-Day after the campaign is over to help more families join the movement.
What happens if we don't get the funding?
If we don't make our funding goals then several things will happen:
- We will have to increase the retail prices and have the
lead times continue to be many months long to reflect the high
expense of Alan and our engineer building bikes in our R&D area
instead of an efficient higher-volume production process. The Haul-a-Day would be less affordable for active families that want to use human-power in
their daily lifestyle.
- We will not be able to offer an electric-assist option until we get funding for development.
- We will not be able to offer a trailer bike attachment option until we get funding for development.
- We will continue to do our best to support families making the commitment to a healthier, human-scale lifestyle, less dependent on oil.
Risks and challenges
We are a small frame building company and bicycle assembler in Eugene, Oregon in business since 1992 with a lifetime warranty on every frame. Our customers rely on us every day to timely deliver custom bikes just in time for a pre-planned international trips.
As a small family business with a team of employees we are dependent on the knowledge and skills of critical team members. If we had to work around the long-term absence of a critical team member there could be delays to the shipping schedule while we get back up to speed in the affected area of the business.
To fulfill the Haul-a-Day orders placed in this Kickstarter campaign we will order a container-load of components from overseas vendors. If our vendors are delayed in shipping components to us, or if there are shipping mishaps, the delivery schedule of the bikes could be affected.
