In Zpocalypse: Survival - made by the creators of award-winning boardgame Zpocalypse - the player, desperate to survive, needs to build traps, manage resources, scavenge the world and fight zombies as well as human foes. BUT. Players also need to manage strategic goals; to build and defend their base, find and train new recruits and keep the team’s health and morale high. The depth of the systems and the amount of content is designed for an incredibly replayable gameplay experience.

Combining our boardgame roots with our love of videogames, we present a fresh take on the zombie survival genre adding deep strategic and RPG systems that place the importance of tactics, your group's mental state, and their home base over their gear and combat. Though some good ol’ zombie killin’ is always in order!

You will recruit, train, and lead a squad of flawed survivors through broken cities and beyond. You'll battle not only undead and human foes, but stress, disease, internal conflict and the dangers of a post-nuclear world. Uncover stories and journals from the past while learning more about the cause of the apocalypse, and pit the survivors against an array of foes with a real-time and tactical pause combat system.

You will have to tend to characters’ spirits as much as you do to their Hit Points. Zpocalypse: Survival is not a game where every survivor wins the day with useful gear and a happy disposition. It is a game about hard trade-offs, endurance, and surviving as long as you can.

Build someplace safe to survive, manage your survivors tasks while at base and help increase their morale by giving them some down time, defend against the horrors of the night from behind the safety of your walls, doors, and traps.

After something has gone horribly wrong in the bunker you are thrown back into the brutal world once again. Without someplace secure you won’t last long when nightfall sets and the undead become more active and aggressive. As you explore, scavenge and recruit more survivors you will be able to build a base anywhere in the world you please. Setup a base in the middle of town where you might attract more zombies but you will have a solid framework to build upon? Or go out into the woods and start from scratch, attracting less attention but having much more work to do in order to have a defensible position? Yet again your choices will drive the gameplay experience!

As you recruit more survivors to your cause, leave some behind at your base and let them continue to work on the base, research new things, train other survivors to improve their skills and rest from their physical and mental injuries while you take your squad out to explore . As night falls, make your way back home to defend what you have built. The undead are attracted to the light, noise and activity at your base. Did you spend enough time reinforcing the walls, setting up new traps, and arming your survivors for the almost certain undead hordes? When they come, and they always come, get all of your survivors involved in defending the base and holding back the undead for just one more day!

The undead aren't your only adversary. The world itself is a dangerous place not to mention other potentially hostile survivors. However, in order to make it you must brave your harsh surroundings looking for supplies, gear and hopefully other survivors that might be worth recruiting.

Inspired by classic Roguelikes, you'll work your way through the procedurally generated town in pursuit of your goal. Though once again with Zpocalypse: Survival, party composition remains a crucial consideration! Do you bring your brightest survivors with you to try and find more gear leaving work or research at your base to get completed at a slower pace? Or maybe bring all your melee fighters who are proficient at keeping out of sight and quite to avoid as many threats as you can along the way? As always, your choices matter.

Some of the biggest hazards come from your own party. Infighting, breakdowns, and unpredictable behavior driven by stress and more will all effect your decisions on the best group of survivors to bring along. A need for revenge on the undead may cause a survivor to abandon the group in search of as many zombies as they can kill. A sudden deep fear of death may drive another survivor to panic and flee, leaving you to fend for yourself or worse attracting unwanted attention...

Real survival is not only about blowing up zombies or other survivors. It's about scavenging and base building and just trying to make it to the next day. When you have to fight though make sure you have some friends with you!

Fast paced and strategic or slower paced and tactical, combat in Zpocalypse: Survival combines real-time action with tactical pause design. Keep the action lively while in real-time dealing with the situation as it unfolds or take a moment to pause and consider your options assigning more tactical options to deal with the situation at hand. Party composition is crucial for avoiding combat when needed or setting up attacks while trying to reduce your own casualties. At all times, you must juggle the need to do damage with the importance of protecting your survivors and avoiding making the situation worse by attracting more enemies.

The post-apocalyptic world is a dangerous place but with our full 3D environments you have a lot of different options when forced to fight. Use distraction methods to avoid combat or setup the perfect ambush. Build traps to help keep the undead from overwhelming you. Barricade choke points to even the score with your limited ammunition and supplies.

As survivors progress they will learn how to fight against the ever present undead better while also learning how to work with their squad more efficiently. Learn to construct and manage the right combination of characters and abilities to become an effective fighting force or a stealthy scouting squad!

Permadeath gives extra weight to each decision, and makes sacrifices matter.

Every event affects your heroes' morale and their humanity, or how they perceive you and the world they live in. What will happen when they reach their breaking point, or they don’t agree with your decisions?

Survivors in Zpocalypse: Survival are not the zombie killing machines of other games to which you might be accustomed. While they are certainly tough and capable, they are also very human: they will respond emotionally to the horrors they encounter. They get stressed, develop phobias, have their own agenda, and deal with situations differently. Their abilities evolve based on their experiences in the world, back at base and through your leadership. On top of this, you will need to make sure you recruit survivors that can not only help you out, but won't cause issues with your other survivors or drag down everyone's mood.

Survivors' morale and humanity respond dynamically to events in the world and back at base. Seeing your best friend eaten by the undead may lower your morale and unnerve one survivor, or may fuel another's rage driving them to an undead killing spree. If the pressures become too overwhelming, they may start to lose their humanity, and they will become depressed, paranoid, panicked, sadistic, or worse.

Survivors with morale or humanity in the extremes, both low and high, will act out in a variety of ways that impact the play experience during combat, exploration, base building, and base defense. You will have to decide how to lead your survivors and deal with their ups and downs.

Consider the needs of your survivors carefully before sending them out to explore – the consequences of your actions could be severe, and are likely permanent.

Full Release 

Zpocalypse: Survival full release will be available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Win and Mac version will be released first, with Linux following. The full release will be distributed on Steam as well as DRM-free download.  

Early Access  

Early Access will be released on Steam only. Early Access will be available for Win initially, and Mac will be added later. We are considering Linux for Early Access but cannot confirm it at this point.

When the FULL GAME releases, all backers will have the option to choose between a STEAM key or a DRM-Free download. (However, EARLY ACCESS WILL BE STEAM ONLY!)

$35,000 - Funded

  • We continue working on the game and get it into your hands with an estimated delivery date of Q1 2016.

$50,000 - Enhanced Animations

  • We bring on a dedicated animator to work on character and world animations and visual effects. This will dramatically increase the number of animations available and allow us to provide even more interaction with the world and gameplay options.

$65,000 - Upstairs/Downstairs

  • Want to build your base a couple stories up or try and use the sewers to get around town? At this point we will be able to focus on not only building out the main game world but adding in sub and upper floors to explore. This will drastically increase the various gameplay options available.

$90,000 - Other Foes & Zpoc Expansion

  • This is a double unlock. First off we can dedicate resources to enhancing our AI systems and character art to enable us to expand our enemy options to not only include various types of undead but also more intelligent opponents such as raiders, militant groups and more. On top of this we will create a new physical mini-expansion to our boardgame that started this all which will be made available as an add-on.

$120,000 - Audio Enhancement

  • We bring on a dedicated team to specifically focus on setting the audio atmosphere for the game with all unique sounds, greatly expanding the soundtrack and helping us to capture the mood for the game.

$140,000 - Zmergency (Post-Release)

  • A hospital themed expansion to the game. We will delve into deeper gameplay options around caring for your survivors as well as working on destructible zombie enemies. Blow off a zombie’s leg it becomes a crawler, chop off an arm it has a harder time attacking you. We will also build our first "dungeon" where you can explore the multiple levels of randomly generated hospital floors. Take some time out of your normal exploration to delve deep into the darkness of the hospital.

$180,000 - Story Mode (Post-Release)

  • We bring on a full time, dedicated writer to expand the gameplay text, the lore you find throughout the game, and to start working on additional story driven gameplay options.

$210,000 - Suburbs (Post-Release)

  • We break out of the cities into our first major area expansion and head to the suburbs. The destruction isn't as rampant here and things are a little more on the green side. Plus you will find new locations like mall and shopping complexes. We will also add in functionality for you to *design* your world before playing setting variables on the state of infection, human population, starting biome and more giving you more ways to enhance the replayability of the game.

$230,000 - Mod Tools

  • We will take our internal tools, polish them up, write tutorials and release them to the world so you can add to and change aspects of the game. Anywhere from creating your own events, adding new survivors or enemies, making more equipment, expanding base building options and much more!

$270,000 - Aftermath (Post-Release)

  • What caused the outbreak? How did it spread so quickly? Why couldn't the military stop it? With Aftermath we will explore some of the deeper history of Zpocalypse. On top of this we will add our second *dungeon* type. Go explore military bunkers, find out more than the average civilian would know about the outbreak, get better gear for your survivors and more advanced tech for your base.

$330,000 - Mulitplayer

  • We bring on dedicated resources to build out a multiplayer architecture and multiplayer game modes. Initially this will include co-op survival modes where you and your friends can work together to try and survive. We will later look at expanding this into some avenues of PvP.

$375,000 - Boardgame Mode (Post-Release)

  • We will essentially build a second game mode, one that we will be able to bring mobile to tablets! Fan of the boardgame, now you can play in all digital splendor. Will include multiplayer functionality!

$400,000 - Seasons (Post-Release)

  • We will bring on a dedicated resource to handle artwork in order to simulate the different seasons in the world of Zpocalypse. On top of this we will add new gameplay that focuses on the environment, how weather can affect your survival.

$425,000 - Boxed Collector’s Edition

  • Enjoy opening up your game box and having a physical game disc? We will produce a high quality Collector’s Edition box that you can add-on. This will be unique and will never be made again!

We have put a lot of thought into creating rewards that enhance your Zpocalypse: Survival experience, whether it be a deeper look into the gameworld via the art book and comic, grabbing some nice physical swag to show off your support or increasing your participation in the game's development by contributing survivors or zombies! Also, we've made sure that every tier starting at only $30 (Beta Backer) gets both Early Access (if you wish to take part) and a voice in the development of the game.

These rewards are our way of thanking you for your interest in the game, and your support in this campaign!

The Background - Select backgrounds to get you started as a character both with the character look and their gear, and with various stat adjustments. This will entail starting the game with some extra survival supplies to help you make it in the brutal world of Zpocalypse. Plus, the GBG gas mask exclusively colored in Kickstarter green. This will be a background you will have the option to start playing as right at the start of the game! 

The Pet -  From our boardgame Zpocalypse we decided to bring over Princess the German shepherd with her exclusive Kickstarter green bandana. While we haven’t hammered down all the details on our pet system, this will essentially provide you with an *extra* survivor of sorts that you can bring out with you in addition to your normal squad of 4 and she will be available right from the start of the game!

T-Shirt - We currently have one design available for the T-shirt but if there is enough interest we have some other ideas in the winds. For now here is the Kickstarter exclusive version of the Zpocalypse: Survival T-shirt

Poster - Get some art of the Zpocalypse to hang on your base wall, with one of these 18x24 posters.

With the 5 successful Kickstarters we have run in the past we have learned a lot from each. One of the biggest things is how variable shipping can be. As such we will be charging shipping after the Kickstarter concludes according to the actual costs incurred to ship to your area. We will do this through our own Pledge Manager system after the campaign concludes.

There are three reasons we are doing this. First, it allows us to provide a lower rate on the actual pledge levels and structure a much tighter budget for the campaign and stretch goals since we do not have to estimate for shipping costs. Second, the funds raised for the project are 100% for the actual project itself rather than being partially inflated by shipping costs that may not be accurate. Finally, it allows us to offer add-ons to everyone, even at the $1 Watcher level since the shipping will be charged after the campaign.

Though the pricing may vary due to any add-ons you pledge for by the end of the campaign, for those who are getting physical products we're anticipating an upper estimate shipping fee to be about: $15-$20 to ship in the USA, about $25-$30 in the EU, $30 - $35 for Australia, $30-$35 Canada and $60 or more everywhere else. Physical Collector level only estimates are closer to: $5-$10 to ship in the USA, about $15-$20 in the EU, $20 - $25 for Australia, $15-$20 Canada and $40 or more everywhere else.

Please note these are only estimates and they will increase or decrease based on the quantity of add-ons you select and their weight, and also the current postal prices at the time of shipping.

The initial funding goal is small compared to what you would see for other projects. The main reason for this is we have already invested substantially into the game over the last 19 months of development. We have a very solid groundwork laid out and mainly need the money raised to enable us to cover expenses relating directly to game development: paying our partners, hiring additional help for key areas of the game (mainly art), buying equipment and software licenses, and so on. We need your support to be able to make Zpocalypse: Survival great. 

At $35,000 we will be able to get the game fully playable state with all of the core, base functionality which includes base building, base defense, exploration, and survivor interactions such as the morale/humanity system. Should we raise funds above our target, it will allow us to develop some of the stretch goal features that we think will really enhance the core game and provide new and additional ways to play the game. These stretch goals will expand your options in the game, expand the game world to more areas, add new game modes such as Multiplayer and Story Mode, and much more. The stretch goals are all things we want to eventually implement in the game, however the more funds we can reach with your help now the sooner we will be able to get those items completed and with no additional cost to you, our amazing backers.

Finally, we wanted to bring Zpocalypse: Survival back to Kickstarter because of the amazing community support for indie games like ours and the opportunity to connect directly with those who are most interested in the game. We look forward to working with enthusiastic fans to make the game of our dreams together.

Risks and challenges

Video games are complex and shipping high quality software on time is often challenging even for experienced teams. While this is our sixth Kickstarter it will be our first in the digital realm. We have learned the ins and outs of board game manufacturing and distribution but that has been through direct experience. While we have done very solid planning and research there is always the potential for errors or miscalculations causing timelines to stretch or scope to change.

Luckily we have already built the base of a lot of some gameplay systems for our exploration/scavenging mode as well as detailing designs for our future system putting us around 35% complete on our programming side not including any features we may unlock via stretch goals. There is still a ton of work to do, but because we have such a solid base in our programming and we have found ways to optimize our art pipeline (with art being the large majority of work to complete), we are confident that we can deliver the full game on schedule and budget.

In any delays arise we will promptly notify backers and provide details on what we are doing to adjust.
