Audiobook "Doreen Valiente -Witch" Read by Philip Heselton
Recording and production of pagan audiobooks. Our first project will be in cooperation with the DVF and CFPS!
My name is MoV Steele. I’m a pagan, and former Managing Director and producer of my own small underground music label, which was based in London. I have a master’s degree in music and fine arts and spent over 18 active and amazing years in the music industry. In December 2014, due to the worldwide music crises, I closed down my business and moved to the north of England. In 2015 I got married and went back to university in order to start a complete new career. My studies will keep me busy for the next five to six years and I'm enjoying each single day of it.
For many years I have been asking myself why there are no pagan audiobooks available, and as my continued searches came up blank, I decided to start the Green Man Audio Books Project in late 2015 and got in contact with Philip Heselton.
In March 2016 the Centre For Pagan Studies has commissioned Green Man Audio Books to record Philip’s latest book, a biography of Doreen Valiente which is entitled Doreen Valiente Witch, and will be narrated by the author. Philip is a dear friend of mine and I'm proud to be able to work with him on this project.
I'm in contact with an array of pagan authors and organisations as well as several independent publishers of pagan literature. As the pagan book world is a more or less non-commercial environment, pagan authors and independent publishers on the whole, cannot afford to invest large amounts of money to release their works. The production costs of creating a professional audio book, including the price of hiring the studio, editing master copies of the recordings, hiring an engineer, licenses, and production of CDs along with promotion and advertising to generate sales can generally be in the excess of £15,000 or more.
On the whole, very few people can afford to pay that amount of money without taking out a bank loan, and nor do authors like Philip Heselton or independent publishers like the Doreen Valiente Foundation and the Centre For Pagan Studies.
My aim is to offer pagan authors and publishers access to my services in return for a non-profit payment to cover production costs. The costs will involve travel to the recording studio, the maintenance and repair of equipment, software licenses, server costs and consumables such as CDs. And these costs are so low that each author and independent publisher will be able to afford the recording and release of their works.
However to be able to produce a high quality product you also need access to high quality equipment. The equipment I have is good but for the project to succeed, there are some parts that I urgently need to replace, and this is the main reason why I'm activating the crowd-funding project.
As soon as the equipment is up to date I can start work on recording the audiobooks. It is also an investment for future projects. There are a lot people out there who cannot read due to old age or visual disabilities; the audiobooks will create the opportunity for them to enjoy previously inaccessible material. If you are in your car, on the train or bus on a long trip at the gym or doing housework, you can listen to an audiobook. What is better than listening to the authors themselves or someone who was chosen by them to read their work.
I summon, stir and call you forth... I call upon all pagans out there, let us create something special; working together we can bring pagan books and literature to the next level. We are a worldwide pagan community and we should think about the future. Many of us download eBooks, music and videos on a daily basis, so why not also add an audiobook into the equation? You can presently pre-order the limited edition of the audiobook with an introduction, spoken by Philip Heselton, and by doing so you will support the Green Man Audio Books Project and give us the chance to start with the recording soon.
This limited edition, which will be provided by the Centre Of Pagan Studies, is a digital MP3 download, includes a digital booklet and is limited to 100 copies. The download link will be sent to you on the evening before the day of the official audiobook release (UK time) in turn you will be able to listen to the audiobook before its official release. After this, the Doreen Valiente Foundation and the Centre Of Pagan Studies will officially release the audiobook. The release date will be announced as soon as the recording is finished.
Risks and challenges
Green Man Audio Books in cooperation with the Doreen Valiente Foundation and the Centre For Pagan Studies will produce this audiobook as fast as possible. Due to the fact that the author will read the book by himself, his book promotion commitments and private arrangements, we plan a production period of up to three months for recording, editing and mastering.
In case we will get more money than we need to start the project, we will donate the rest to the Doreen Valiente Foundation!
Green Man Audio Books is a non profit project with the aim to produce high quality pagan audiobooks in cooperation with and for authors and independent publishers of pagan literature and pagan organisations. This is our first audiobook project and we are looking forward to future projects.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
