Our goal is to provide a home for the passionate creators, for the forward thinking artist supremely dedicated to their work.
Why is Great Time Studios worth supporting? What makes our studio different?
We wouldn't have music as we know it without recording studios. Every hit song, every legendary artist, every defining era of music; they all owe their success to a handful of revolutionary studios. The Beatles had Abbey Road. Los Angeles had Sound City. New York had The Magic Shop. Our generation has Great Time Studios.
Our studio is built from a band's perspective. Great Time creates music through jamming and spontaneity, and as producers and engineers, we bring the same ideology to the recording process. Combining discipline with comfortability, we work with musicians to produce quality material with the highest standards. We are as involved in your music as you are.
Location - Situated on 140 acres of wooded farmland, yet accessible from major cities, including New York City, Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia.
Atmosphere - Natural wood and plenty of sunlight create a sense of familiarity. We've designed the studio from the ground up to function as efficiently and effectively as possible. Every detail has been thought out, down to the exact angles of the walls. Bands feel like they're at home here. At Great Time Studios, it becomes more about the entire experience. Walks through the woods, bonfires by the creek, and late night jam sessions are routine.
Equipment/Gear - We pride ourselves on our collection of hand built vintage microphones and modified analog gear. The quest to preserve analog warmth is often lost on modern production techniques, but we believe it is essential to producing high quality recordings. We implement a unique analog/digital hybrid workflow as necessary, with all of our "in-the-box" recording powered by our custom built computer, Elmo. Boasting 480 gigs of RAM, he is often the last step in the process of digitizing music for today's consumer market.
Your contribution will help fund a hub where artists can come together and create. When you're at the studio, you can't help but have a GREAT TIME
Who are we?
We are Great Time. Three self employed, self motivated twenty-two year olds with big dreams. We are a band, but beyond this we are a family, looking to make a big impact on the way musicians approach their craft. Our mission is to produce music of the highest possible caliber with the simplicity to bring people together and the ingenuity to make them think. We as a band strive to work in full collaboration from the first inkling of an idea to the final master. We are currently working on our debut album to be released in 2016: 'GREAT ALBUM'. The entirety of this album will have been written, recorded, mixed, and mastered by us, in our own recording studio that we have been building over the past 2+ years.
How did we get here?
Great Time Studios, nestled in the suburbs of Philadelphia, exists on an operating farm owned by the drummer's family. Formerly an office created for a home business, we have transformed the space into a highly sought after recording facility entirely by ourselves. The process began with a complete interior overhaul, including new floors, fully acoustically treated walls, custom built ceiling panels, and sound proof windows and doors. Of course the most important aspect of any studio is the quality of recording gear, and that is where we separate ourselves from any other studio. We produce our own microphones, built in house and modeled after vintage masterpieces. By sourcing parts from all over the world, we craft a unique, high quality, highly custom microphone paralleled only by the finest vintage gear. We also modify and repair existing gear to create unique pieces of equipment not found in any other studio. Our 32 channel Soundcraft Ghost, purchased on eBay, has undergone a complete internal revamp, including re-capping and replacing ICs on every channel to improve the preamps and EQs. All of this work takes place upstairs in our electronics and computer-science lab. Out in the garage, we build our own baffles, diffusers, and acoustic panels for the ceilings and walls with materials we pick up at Home Depot. Our bass amp was found in the trash outside a ritzy apartment complex in Brooklyn, wheeled home on the seat of a bike, only lacking a five cent fuse. We collect and fix gear that people deem useless and it all adds up to our little home.
Who have we worked with?
We've worked on a variety of projects with like-minded musicians including:
Ruby My Dear
Jazz Students from the Interlochen Center of the Arts
The American Helicopter Museum
So why are we telling you all this?
It has come to the point where we have decided to turn our space into the next big thing, with an addition of around 1000 square feet. We are transforming what was once an overgrown extension of Pennsylvania forest into a breeding ground for up and coming talent, a hub for the budding scene our peers are creating. We have already recorded a number of projects for other bands, albums, EPs, singles, mixes, masters, and it has become clear that we need more space to operate efficiently and effectively. With the help of a local builder, we are hard at work constructing our new space by hand, a space entirely designed by us. From pouring footers and the foundation to framing the walls, we have been an integral part of the building process every step of the way, and are now working on the final stages of completion. All of this is funded by our life savings and contributions from those who believe in our dream, totaling to over $140,000. We are quite literally putting everything we have into this project, and though we are fully confident in our ability to carry it out to completion, we have begun to reach out for help from external sources. Through our efforts we have raised upwards of $6,200. However, we still find ourselves with $40,000 in remaining expenses. We don’t come to you asking for a handout. We come to you as three hard working and serious individuals with an opportunity to help one of the most ambitious projects happening in music today, and with the confidence that any contribution will not go underutilized. We come to you sharing the importance of the recording studio, both in music's history as well its future. Recent changes in the industry have left us with recordings that often sound cold, unnatural, and inhuman. The subtle imperfections of our favorite records are a cherished byproduct of antiquated recording techniques, rendered obsolete by simpler, more convenient processes. We aim to preserve the techniques developed by previous generations, while seamlessly integrating them with modern sensibilities. As studios have been downsizing due to many changes in the music business, the purpose and need for these spaces has not; an environment for musicians, engineers and friends from all walks of life to converge and create, while simultaneously adding to and becoming part of music's rich history.
Since the beginning, Great Time Studios has been completely self made by three inspired, resourceful, and dedicated musicians, self taught to become producers, engineers, and more with nothing but the highest of standards. Thank you for acknowledging our words.
