Great Notion Brewing is a 7 BBL brewery and tap room in Portland Oregon that has taken over The Mash Tun at 2204 NE Alberta #101 (next to Pine State). We will rebrand as Great Notion with amazing new beer and an innovative food menu in January 2016 (after getting our brewers license from the TTB) Great Notion Brewing will primarily focus on juicy IPA’s and creative sour ales. You'll also find a variety of beers on fresh fruit, barrel aged beers, and big stouts made with coffee, maple & chocolate.
Our barrel program will be hosted in an off site location where our American sour ales age for 9-24 months in oak barrels and custom built clay amphoras. A portion of our sour ales will be blended with Summer Oregon fruit like peaches, apricots, strawberries, and cherries.
Great Notion Brewing is a project started by three friends; James Dugan (Brewing and Marketing) Andy Miller (brewing and operations), and Paul Reiter (strategy and finance). All three guys live on the same street in North Portland and share a love for craft beer. Andy and James met while home brewing in 2010, and began developing recipes and building a friendship. Together they have 25 years of brewing experience with medals in the National Homebrew Competition for fruit lambic and Double IPA. Paul has an MBA from Babson with a focus on start-ups and creative enterprise. In April of 2014, the boys finally got together and shared some home brew. On this night they enjoyed a Stout with hand smoked malt, a 3 year old Peach Sour, and a 10% double IPA. It’s fair to say, on this night, Great Notion Brewing was born.
Why Great Notion? After many years of home brewing, we had a product that deserved to be shared, and a desire to share. Our beers are bold, playful, and attractively unusual. At Great Notion Brewing, we don’t take ourselves too seriously, just our beer.
New GNB beers in early 2016 include Juicebox (Double IPA), Juice Jr. (IPA), Sour Patch (Berliner Weisse), Stamper Stout (American Stout) Expect experimental seasonal beers like a Chocolate Coconut Porter, Passionfruit Wit, Hibiscus Saison, Chipolte smoked Porter, Chocolate Peanut butter stout, Coffee and Cream ale, Rasberry tart (berliner) and more!
We spent a good chunk of our initial capital (SBA loan and some gracious private investors) on the purchase of The Mash Tun. With your help, we can purchase some additional brewing and kitchen equipment.
The money raised on Kickstarter will be spent in 2016 on:
Brew Equipment: new mill & auger, water and gas flow meters, new tank valves, new hoses, a keg washer, oak barrels & racks, and a brite tank.
Restaurant / Taproom Equipment: New glassware, refrigerator, dishes, dishwashers, new chef, paint, decorating, lighting, and more!
Risks and challenges
Since we acquired The Mash Tun we are already up and running as a bar and restaurant. Sales have been great, but we are not able to brew our own beer until the federal government's TTB division approves our application. This should happen by the end of November. With that said, there is not much risk in supporting us through a small prize/donation!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
