Deadstock - The First Sneaker-Themed Coffee Shop and Gallery
A sneaker culture-inspired coffee shop and art venue in the sneaker capital of the world, Portland, OR.
What Is Deadstock?
Deadstock Coffee and Gallery is the world's first sneaker-themed coffee shop and gallery space. We combined some of the best things the Rose City is known for under one roof - premium coffee, local organic food, kicks and quirkiness.
Why Portland? Why The Name?
Portland is ranked top 3 in cities for coffee shops in the United States. Coffee enthusiasts here are now rivaling the wine and craft beer in industry! Due to market saturation, Portland has now passed Seattle in craft coffee growth and will continue to grow as its focus has always been on finding its own niche in the industry. The "foodie" industry here is next level as well. There are all types of eateries here ranging from southern-fried comfort foods to high end vegetarian, to rock and roll sushi... and that doesn't include the 500+ food carts. There's even a completely vegan strip club - the only in the States (which illustrates that Portland really is weird).
This city is the sneaker capital of the world with multiple industry leaders calling this place home - Nike and Brand Jordan, adidas America, Keen, and the recent addition of Under Armor. It's respected as a design, marketing, technology and 'green' processes powerhouse as well. Our goal is to create an inspirational space for anyone to come in for a quick coffee and bite before work, lunch or business meeting. We will leverage our connections in all these outlets to create a premium, authentic experience for anyone who wants to come though for a cup or to just talk kicks.
In the sneaker world the word "deadstock" means "brand new". It refers to a brand new pair of shoes, probably a pair you've been holding on to for a special occasion like your graduation or wedding day. Deadstock Gallery is the first of it's kind; a new venture for not only Portland, but the world.
About The Team
Ian Williams has been a footwear developer at Nike for the last five years, eight years total. He did a brief time in both retail and air bag manufacturing when he saw an "opportunity" and took a job as a janitor on the Nike HQ campus. Through the connections he made over the years cleaning toilets, Ian was able to create a shoe with Nike SB! Today along with his day job, Ian throws sneaker events around the Portland area... it's time to take them to a more permanent place though.
Young Ben (YB) and Ian met when Ben was intern at Nike. A shared mentor connected them in 2008 and have stayed connected since. After three years in Nike's Innovation Kitchen he is currently designing all types of performance shoes from running to basketball. Aside from their professional careers, YB and Ian have worked closely on sneaker art, local sneaker events and brand consultation for business around PDX.
Alex, our resident coffee enthusiast, is currently a manager at New Seasons Market. He and Ian met at the store and instantly connected over their shared appreciation for the sneaker culture, and for a good sandwich. Since 2010 Alex has been managing the sandwich and coffee bar in New Seasons. This experience has given him the knowledge of the day-to-day responsibilities, along with expanding his knowledge on hyperlocal organic ingredients. And to top It off, his Supreme 5-panel and sneaker collection goes back many years.
Board of Advisors
Our Advisory Board is full of well-respected creative and business people both locally and globally. Their experiences and our willingness to learn will surely lead to success for years to come... don't want to bore you with names though... *cough* Tinker Hatfield *cough*
What We Serve
Our coffee beans come from Dapper & Wise, an organic roaster outside of Portland that is quickly becoming known for their benchmark eco-focused roasting methods. D&W's beans come from far above fair-trade sources around the world. Their flavors range from high-end bright and floral single origins to dark and caramely Italian blends. With more than 30 combined years of experience between the two owners as baristas, roasters and entrepreneurs, they are also excellent people to have in our corner. Their intense focus on both their product and on doing the right thing is what makes us proud to serve their coffee. And of course, it tastes great! Our Deadstock signature beverages will be inspired by Portland's eclectic culture. Locally blended teas and hot chocolates will be on the menu as well.
Our sandwich menu was intensely created by a chef who understands the importance of letting the ingredients shine, and with everyone in mind; the sandwich connoisseur, carnivores, vegetarians, vegans and those who are gluten free. Everyone will have multiple options. And if none of those sound good today it's also fully customizable. The sandwich ingredients will come from local sources known for their product quality and their environmental awareness during production.
What We Need
Deadstock is already alive in our minds through the sneaker events and community involvement we have had over the last couple years. With your generous donation we will take the steps to making it a permanent space.
The first part of the investment will be used to secure the location in the Old Town/Chinatown District. Most of Portland's sneaker shops, art galleries and Pensole Academy are located in this district. We already have the perfect place in mind... now we just need you!
Deadstock will be a laid-back place during the day with the ability to host art openings and throw parties at night. To do this we want to create a modular space where we can easily transform the layout. And of course our atmosphere will feature nods to the sneaker culture.
Without equipment we can't make you anything or offer you a place to sit! A large portion of your contribution will go toward purchasing the espresso machine, coffee grinders, and sandwich prep stations, as well as seating and coffee tables.
This is what you all really care about:
Special Thank You's:
First, to my family - Mommy, Sata, Tee, Moose Louie and Uncle Ronnie. To my friends - Erin, Ben and Thuy, Rick, Jackson, Andres, Mikey, Terrence and Veronica and everyone else not listed... I havent forgotten about you, just trying to spare everyone from reading a whole page.
To Evan and Tyler at Dapper & Wise for your mentorship, for allowing us to feature your coffee beans, for offering your tasting room for the video, and mostly for your friendship!
Jonny Cool for the beats. Both of us had big dreams since our days in Nike Custodial, bumping beats in the halls and burning sample CDs on our breaks.
To all my mentors and the people I bounced this crazy idea off of years ago - Esaie, Astor, D'Wayne, Gemo, Rashad, E. Scott, Lisar, Keith and Valerie, Mike, Tinker, Sandy, Kris, Fraser and many many more.
And to all the artists who have been rolling with me since day one - YB, Erin, Mundo, Digs and Eugene, Chad, Jamaal, Ashley, Charles, Nick, EL and Katie
Without your help, our chances of creating this space are very low.Kickstarter上の説明責任について詳しく知る
