Moxie is the wireless lens control system that bridges the gap between capability and affordability. Moxie allows you to control focus, iris, and zoom using a smartphone or handheld controller.
Moxie's flexible design means that it can grow with you. If you're just getting started or rarely need wireless lens control, Moxie is affordable; but, if you are a professional cinematographer, Moxie provides the day-in-day-out performance and reliability that you need to get the job done. When considering that motors with comparable performance cost in the neighborhood of $2,000 and can't be used without a motor driver and a hand-held controller that cost several thousand's more, it's not hard to see why Moxie can't be beat in terms of value and flexibility.
We created Moxie to empower filmmakers, and we put this Kickstarter campaign together because we can't do it without you.
What you see in our video and the rest of this page is only a prototype. We've leveraged rapid prototyping technologies (like 3D printing) in order to get to this point in just under five months. The final product that will be delivered, should we reach our goal, will be injection molded out of a high-quality, high-strength, low-weight material (such as polycarbonate). Everything that we raise as part of this Kickstarter will be used to cover the cost of tooling and materials needed to take Moxie from prototype to production.
Please help us make Moxie a reality. We know you're going to love what Moxie can do for you.
- Andrew and Eduardo
Getting started with Moxie is a quick and easy process: 1) mount to most lenses using standard mounting rods, 2) connect to your camera's battery or to an external power supply, 3) calibrate automatically for lenses with end-stops or manually for lenses without, and 4) capture new and interesting shots by controlling wirelessly through your smartphone or a hand-held controller.
The best thing about Moxie is that it can grow with you. Moxie provides flexibility and gives you the best performance where it counts without breaking the bank so that you can grow your capabilities as needed.
We are committed to making Moxie a high-quality product that you can rely on, and that is reflected in our design choices—both inside and out.
The Moxie App will be available on both iOS and Android. We designed the Moxie App to enhance the capabilities of the filmmaker, and we think that even the most ardent proponents of traditional hand-held controllers will find something to love about it.
Moxie is a top-tier professional device. We take pride in our work, so while we are trying to make this equipment more accessible in terms of cost and complexity, all Moxie components were selected to ensure quality, performance, and reliability.
We first announced Moxie to the world at Cine Gear Expo 2019 and were blown away by the overwhelmingly positive reception. Matthew Allard from Newsshooter stopped by our booth to chat with us about Moxie during the Expo.
In this video, Andrew walks us through mounting, manual calibration, and controlling focus using our latest Moxie prototype and phone app.
And now, a quick look at some of the prototypes we made along the way. We've leveraged the speed of 3D printing to make the housing for all of our prototypes, the final product will however be injection molded out of a high-strength, low-weight material (such as polycarbonate).
A special thanks to our family and friends who have supported us, encouraged us, and helped us along the way. We couldn't have done it without you.
Risks and challenges
The best way to address technical risk was to build Moxie first. That is why, over the last several months, we have overcome all major technical hurdles and built a functional prototype. While there is still work to be done to optimize the design, this is work that is familiar to us; with our background in aerospace mechanisms, control software, and electronics we are confident we can deliver on our promises.
Because of iOS limitations and the sheer variety of Android devices out there, there is a risk that the Moxie app will not function exactly as we've intended on every device. If that's the case, we will work hard to ensure your device is supported, and in the event that we are unable to deliver the functionality we have promised, rest assured that we will not turn our backs on you.
Scaling hardware is a notoriously challenging task, so we have designed with manufacturability in mind from the very beginning. That being said, there is always a risk that things don't go as planned, like requiring additional tooling iterations and component shipment delays. To mitigate this risk, we have already begun working and building relationships with manufacturers to ensure that our design is production ready. Furthermore, we've explicitly included a 50% margin on our schedule so that you know exactly where we stand.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
