The Gravity Ball was designed by a physician whose goal was to make resistance exercise fun, safe and accessible for people of all ages and fitness levels.
The vision of Gravity Ball Fitness is to see people of all ages and fitness levels achieve their ideal level of fitness and sustain it by providing a new and different way to do quality resistance exercise that is easy and safe but also fun and creative.
Three and a half years ago Mark Chavez M.D. quit his job as an emergency medicine physician to begin working to create the Gravity Ball and to bring the Gravity Ball vision to life. Using a small amount of savings and with the help of friends and family Dr. Chavez dedicated all his time and effort in creating the design of the Gravity Ball and developing his unique way of using it to get fit and strong and ultimately take back his health and confidence.
In disbelief at the decline of his own health after years of working overnight shifts in the emergency room, Dr. Chavez started building what would later become the Gravity Ball in the early morning hours of his one bedroom apartment in Long Beach, CA.
The Gravity Ball
The Gravity Ball gives people of all ages and fitness levels a simple and challenging way to do resistance exercise at home, in the office, or outdoors at your leisure. The Gravity Ball is also an invaluable accessory for any athlete, coach, or sports and fitness enthusiast. Its innovative design makes it equally beneficial for the beginner to the advanced exerciser.
Over time and after seeing thousands of patients it became clear to Dr. Chavez and Dr. Taylor that many of the most common health problems they were seeing such as neck and back pain, various joint pains, arthritis, diabetes, weight gain, chronic fatigue and even depression stemmed from the negative health effects of chronic muscle loss. For this reason Dr. Chavez and Dr. Taylor made a commitment to create a new method of resistance exercise that could be done by anyone to:
1) stop chronic muscle loss
2) increase bone strength and quality
3) provide a way to maintain strength and decrease body fat
by using the Gravity Ball to find your own unique way of practicing consistent resistance exercise for the purpose of maintaining strength, mobility, and fitness throughout all stages of life.
The Gravity Ball was conceived as a fun and efficient way of incorporating resistance exercise into your everyday life. It also provides a solution to many of the barriers that people often face when thinking about joining a gym or using equipment that may be intimidating to some.
Over the past three years we developed the Gravity Ball from an idea into a fully functional prototype. In 2011, our team started making hand made Gravity Ball prototypes in a small workshop in Downtown Los Angeles, CA and began distributing them to hundreds of friends, family members and colleagues to use and test. From the feedback we have received and the results we have seen, we know the Gravity Ball is a great way to achieve and sustain health and fitness.
In 2012, we began working with a small design group in Southern California with a goal of manufacturing the Gravity Ball on a much larger scale. Since then, we have obtained the patent, completed the design and tooling and are now ready to order our first production run of the Gravity Ball.
Making the handmade prototypes is time intensive (15 hours to make one Gravity Ball!) and the cost of the raw materials is very high so we can no longer afford to make them by hand. We are asking for your support to help fund the first production run of a minimum of 250 Gravity Ball units.
Non-Traditional Fitness - The Gravity Ball is perfect for combining cardio and resistance exercise by adding resistance to cycling and running and by adding an additional challenge to yoga and Tai Chi practices along with various sports.
Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation -The Gravity Ball is an ideal tool for physical therapy and rehabilitation. Its unique features provide patients with poor grip strength the ability to do exercise they normally would not be able to do by using the pull-away extender straps and Velcro handles. Exercises can also be safely done while lying, sitting or standing.
Personal Trainers can use the Gravity Ball to expand their repertoire of exercises and incorporate new variations of classic exercises for their clients.
Group Fitness Instructors have a new tool to challenge even the most experienced fitness enthusiast. Cardio and resistance exercise can also be incorporated into the same class.
The Gravity Ball’s patented design utilizes a 3-strap system, which provides multiple exercises including various hands-free ways of exercising which is important for those who have decreased grip strength. This feature alone sets the Gravity Ball apart from most other types of exercise equipment.
The Gravity Ball's three-strap system includes:
- A pair of Velcro adjustable handles
- A pair of pull-away extender straps
- Four attachment anchors to use with a pair quick-release soft handles
Current available weights:: 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9, and 11 lbs
Dimensions: 7" diameter, 22" circumference
Available colors: orange, pink, blue, charcoal gray, and black
HOW TO USE YOUR GRAVITY BALL
A successfully met campaign goal of $25,000 will cover the costs to purchase the minimum order of 250 Gravity Balls, including shipping, packaging, tax and other related costs. After distributing the Gravity Balls to the backers we plan to do the following with the remaining Gravity Balls.
- Distribute Gravity Balls to LA/OC based physical therapists, rehabilitation specialists, weight loss specialists, fitness instructors, and sports-specific trainers for use in their facilities
- Create a new Gravity Ball Fitness class
- Use as part of our new Gravity Health program
- Distribute amongst our team to use for demos, promotions, testing, and research/development.
Funding earned from any of the other rewards (not including Gravity Balls) will go towards the following:
1) Recruiting additional help for packaging, shipping and distribution of initial order to backers and other early adopters.
2) Updating equipment including purchasing two new computers and two iPads for use in the Gravity Health program.
3) Purchasing more Gravity Balls once the above needs are met.
Note: Prior to shipping Gravity Balls to our supporters, our engineers and team members will be testing a smaller order of 25 Gravity Balls throughout March and April for strength, durability, resistance to wear and other factors in order to ensure that we are 100% satisfied before placing the larger order of Gravity Balls for backers. Due to the three years spent refining the design, we seriously doubt that any major issues will arise but in case they do we will update our Kickstarter page with a new timeline as soon as possible.
We are an independent group of health and fitness professionals who have come together to create a new way to do resistance exercise that anyone can do that we call the Gravity Ball method.
Gravity Ball Fitness is on a mission to cause a positive disruption in the public health sector by educating the public about the importance of resistance exercise throughout all stages of life and to provide a unique and creative way to do resistance exercise that can be practiced for a lifetime.

Risks and challenges
Quality control is priority to us. As so, we have taken care that each step in the process, from prototyping to production of the Gravity Ball is done with attention to detail and with the highest possible quality.
We have been careful in selecting the consultants and partners that we are working with to minimize setbacks, and so that we can deliver your Gravity Ball to you in a timely fashion. If any setbacks or delays do occur, we promise to keep you updated frequently as we work to resolve any problems that may arise in the process.
As we transition to full-scale production after the close of our Kickstarter campaign, we are confident that we can fulfill our promises to our backers and have the Gravity Ball in their hands this spring.
