Twelve thousand homicides every year is a staggering number but the number does not resonate in the mind's eye. An image of twelve thousand chalk body outlines fifty feet wide and eight blocks long will create an image that will give the entire country a base from which to understand the devastation of gun violence on America today. This is the project that the city of Philadelphia has approved. It is two days of reflection and action creating an image that will be broadcast to the nation and the world. This public art project will be a huge media event. The media presence on the ground and in the air will broadcast to the nation the process of the community creating the drawing and the completed drawing. A website providing a scrolling image of the drawing and images of the community in action will be built so that the drawing lives on after the event.
This is a community art project. The project must be funded by the community. The city of Philadelphia has approved this project because there is no cost to the city. What we need: two thousand sticks of sidewalk chalk, a website with a scrolling image of the entire drawing, photographers on the ground in a bucket truck and in a helicopter and city permits. Twelve thousand homicides is a large number but twelve thousand bodies stretched eight blocks long and fifty feet wide is an undeniable and tragic reality. Art has the ability to make the unimaginable real. Join us. Let's draw for the nation an image that shows the reality of gun violence on America today.
