We're Grasswatch Games, a partnership of two queer disabled folk.
We're making our debut with Sundown, a low tech science-fantasy set in a transhumanist frontier. Think cyberpunk goes wild west. It's an episodic game that focuses on otherism, class, and colonialism.
Sundown is a dyslexia-friendly, campaign-length rules-light tabletop roleplaying game for 2-6 players, one of whom is the lorekeeper, with a suggested session length of 3-4 hours.
Sundown tells political stories of a small and intimate scope. You play multiple campaigns and characters in the same world, your next one inheriting the world from your last. Your actions, though small, will ripple across history.
You play a drifter: a queer, punk outcast taking work wherever you can from folk that hate you.
Fiends, the monsters of this world, linger at the edges of civilization. There’s always someone who wants some fiend dead.
Autocrats and Lords point their fingers at each other while Syndicates and Revolutions rot their thrones beneath them. Drifters who don’t slay fiends oft find themselves slaying folk instead.
But maybe you prefer to keep your hands clean. You’re a spy, stealing secrets from one corporatist for another, or you’re a thief, liberating the hoarded wealth of lords and bankers.
Maybe you’re lucky. One of the few of ‘legitimate’ employ. You work for the Merchant Protections Guild, a diplomat and ambassador to the townships of Sundown, struggling to keep the highroad from crumbling… and Sundown’s delicate peace with it.
Sundown brings body mods into the frontier with some things called changes.
Sundown is littered with things that change your body - slip into some tailtar and you'll grow a tail. Snack on some indigoji, and you'll turn blue. The science of changing takes these things from the wild and combines them in new ways to create totally different changes. The experiments are mostly consensual.
To get your changes, though, you'll need the coin, the reagents, a scientist that likes you, and a month of spare time. Be cautious. Most folk in Sundown don't take kindly to changelings. The march of science pushes us further and further from tradition, and the demagogues of yesteryear struggle to keep power.
Take the long sail to Sundown and fight for the right to mold your body as you choose.
Sundown uses a simple roll to resolve every situation, from slaying a fiend to giving a speech. You roll a single 6-sided die and try to overcome a difficulty between 1 and 9.
To make your drifter, you answer six questions about their life. You’ll refine each answer into a short, snappy statement about their personality or skills. These are called Traits.
When you roll against a challenge, the lorekeeper sets a difficulty, and you count the traits that could give you an edge. Each adds 1 to your roll. Sometimes you’ll be in an advantageous position or have the perfect tools for the job. This can give you an edge, too. If you meet or exceed the difficulty, you succeed!
But if you fail, you take Stress. Stress is kind of like Sundown’s hit points. There are three kinds: Anxiety, Exhaustion, and Injury. Stress is hard to get rid of, too. Healing items have severe overdose penalties, and you can only heal naturally with your precious downtime.
If we reach $7,500, we can print enough books to upgrade the hardcovers from casebound to a foil stamped faux leather binding. It'll be much nicer to touch, hold, and use, and you'll get to show off your fancy book to all your friends.
If we reach $10,000, we can produce a Sundown audio book with twitch streamer and voice actor Astreigha's melodious voice. Everyone who gets a PDF will get this audio book, too!
Currently, we do our layout in house. We're pretty good, but we're new to this, and we can do better. With $15,000, we can hire a layout artist and graphic designer and commission even more art to bring Sundown that next level up to Gorgeous.
When an Aehalan weapons master dies, his former apprentice is sent out into the dangerous world of Sundown, deeper than they've ever been, to discover the truth of their Master's death. Was it the brutality of man, the jaws of a beast, or something much worse.
'My Name is Vengeance' will be a novella set in Sundown, written by Sel, a Tsalagi author and language revival activist. It will be produced as a PDF, and everyone who gets a Sundown PDF will receive a copy.
Currently, we're looking at digital printing simply because we don't know how many folks out there want to join us in Sundown. For low quantities, digital printing is ideal, but if we hit $25,000, we'll have enough orders to get offset printing for our books. This will be a significant bump up in print quality!
Sundown’s ‘Heat Cheats’ give you evocative but short notes to seed your creativity as you create your own adventures. With $30,000 though, we can bring on a fellow game designer to craft a full module complete with multiple heats, new wonders, and new changes for you to explore and experiment with.
If we fund even higher, keep an eye on our stretch goals. See what we dream up, or tell us what you’d like to see.
BackerKit & Shipping
We will be using BackerKit as our pledge manager for this campaign. If you'd like to increase your pledge or add things to your pledge, like extra dice, you'll be able to do that through BackerKit. If we fund, you'll even be able to pre-order well after May 10th, up until we send Sundown off to the printers!
You won't be prompted to pay shipping or tax up front when you back. We collect your information, like the address we'll ship to, after the end of our campaign in a survey. We will use our survey to collect the cost of shipping and taxes on all your backer rewards.
Below with each physical tier are estimates for shipping to the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and the rest of the world. We can't promise this is exactly what you'll pay, but this is our best guess, erring on the high side so you hopefully won't pay more than you expected.
Play It Forward!
Once we get our BackerKit rolling - it could take a day or two - there will be an add-on option in our pledge manager to pay for an additional PDF. Give it to your friend, or leave it with us and we'll make sure it goes to a fan in need.
This tier will get you your name in the book and backer-exclusive updates to help you stay up to date on Sundown’s Kickstarter campaign.

We're proud of Sundown, and it makes us giddy when our industry peers say nice things about it. Here's a few examples of that!
“Sundown asks an awesome question: What if Cyberpunk but Cowboy-Western But Bloodbourne But Gender-fluid But Wild But Nuanced?
This is a game that will excite and inspire your table. The world is bizarre, creepy, and very VERY cool.
Sundown feels like a fully realized world, but it's also waiting for you to jump in and make it your own. It's beautifully crafted and easy to pick up and play. The game has fantastic bones to it, and the character creation process is one of the most fun things I've experienced!”
-Jamila R. Nedjadi of Sword Queen Games
"The world of Sundown satiates the hungriest of players looking for a wild west/sci-fi collaborative storytelling space. It inspects cyberpunk through a lens that focuses on the characters. It's so easy to get lost in this beautiful immersive world!"
"Sundown is a deceptively simple game, written with brevity and clarity. It centers an experience of small, personal struggles as outsiders in a world that changes you, and fast. It takes the tone and scope seriously and puts safety tools in your hands up front to help with that. The setting is fractured and beautiful and leaves so much room for stories and exploration, and it lends itself to the picaresque style of play I so enjoy."
-Michael T Lombardi
"Sundown is an RPG That places culture, class and history at the forefront of its setting, exploring these ideas in a vibrant and exciting new world full of unique twists on old concepts and evocative mysteries. Combine this with a simple, robust system and some snappy clever writing and you have one of the most exciting little games out there."
-Liam Ginty of Sandy Pug Games
"Sundown has a compelling, unique setting with easy to learn rules that express the setting and your characters. I love the descriptive Traits & Aspects system and how it defines characters. The chapter on consent at the table is a vital element for most modern RPGs."
-Adrian Thoen, creator of Impulse Drive
"Sundown’s an honest to goodness diverse science-fiction weird-west setting. The system is simple enough to run with little prep, but is set up for long term play. The wealth, reputation, and resource mechanics are not too crunchy but also expansive enough to make character advancement rewarding and meaningful. It’s the perfect set up to play a number of games in different, fascinating locales, to develop a meaningful legacy of play. I’m so glad I picked up the beta, I’m looking forward to the full version."
-Chris Challice, author of Seith and Sword, Space Pirate Alice Black: Blood Tribute, and Vanagard
"Sundown is a new exploration on identity and our place in the world that takes elements of cyberpunk and puts them in a new environment. It approaches changing your body frankly, which appeals to me as a trans nonbinary person, and makes something fantastical instead something real, something imperfect in the fiction but still impressive. All of this while including some fascinating approaches to healing, and touching on how politics affect people. I certainly haven't seen anything like it!"

Hi, I'm L A Wilga! I've been writing games as a hobby for 13 years, and I've decided to throw my game design hat into the ring with Sundown. Sundown is my first full book, and I'm already designing more.
Follow me on twitter @lawilga!
Hi, I'm James, or more often Nova! I helped found Grasswatch Games by accident when just trying to help L A with some monsters for their book. I somehow wound up as the layout artist, editor, and general paperwork nerd for Grasswatch Games, and it was the best decision I've ever made.

Howdy I'm Orion! I've been a long time fan of game art and design especially for tabletop since I was a youth so getting the opportunity to work on Sundown is a dream come true! I love getting to use my creativity as a motion graphic designer and multi-skilled visual artist hailing from Texas with my two kitties and plant babies.

This video is about the kickstarter for Sundown, and goes briefly over some information about the game and backer rewards. It is 1 minute and 52 seconds long.
Video of L A Wilga and James sitting side by side facing the camera with a white background behind them. Both of them will speak, marked by "L A" when L A begins speaking, and "James" when James begins speaking.
Hi, I’m L A Wilga. I’m the author of Sundown and the director of Grasswatch Games.
And I’m James, the primary editor of Sundown and the assistant director of Grasswatch Games.
[The on-screen video focus shifts to a map of Sundown, zoomed in over Farmsmeet Woodsedge, and Smallmouth.]
Sundown is a low tech science-fantasy set in a transhumanist frontier. Think cyberpunk goes West Marches. [The view of the map changes to show Seawell and Grasswatch.]
You play a drifter: a queer outcast taking work wherever you can from folk that hate you. [Two people sitting on the floor, filling out character sheets.]
To make your drifter, you answer six questions about their life. [Camera shifts to show a close of up of two sets of hands filling out character sheets on the floor]
At the end, you’ll have six traits that define you. Sundown runs on a single d6. [View cuts between the same group of people, the group gesturing and chatting as they continue writing on their character sheets.]
When you roll, you take a look at your traits and count the ones that could give you an edge. This kind of open-ended system gives us a lot of room to spin outrageous stories.
[View shifts to a still image of a different group of players, posing for the camera in front of a small table with character sheets, dice, and a consent table on it.]
Like that time my group was competing in a fishing tournament, and one of my players decided to fish with bombs.
[Another still image of the second group of players, with different poses and a closer focus on the table, with more dice and pencils in view.]
It worked, but they had to convince the witnesses that the explosions were totally a lake monster trying to get them.
[A third still image of the second group, laughing, at the same table.]
That went well until they tried to kill each other over a dollar.
[View shifts to the first group of players, who are gesturing to each other while playing Sundown.]
We also had a drifter in another game who could hear plants. His group’s job was to track a stolen giant pumpkin, and he could hear it dying.
[View cuts to a different angle on the first group of players, who chat to each other, smiling.]
Poor guy couldn’t handle it when he found the pumpkin pie, and tried to kill everyone.
[View cuts to a still photo of an orange tabby cat, standing on a table with character sheets, dice, and pencils]
If you’d like to weave your own ridiculous tales, consider backing us!
We have PDFs and softcover prints, and kickstarter exclusives like signed hardcovers, custom Sundown dice, and personalized dice boxes.
[The view goes quickly to a close up character sheet, a softcover copy of Sundown that reads Sundown, Grasswatch Games; yellow dice with black sunrings engraved on the 6 face, and a wooden dice box, stained grey, with a brass latch and a sunring engraved on the top, with the name Lotus in the center.]
$5,000 is the amount we need to afford art for Sundown and ship backer rewards,
[A still image of art of a Frogbeast in the floodgrass with a cat on its head is shown briefly, before switching to a full view of the map of Sundown.]
If we reach 10,000, we can produce a Sundown audio book with twitch streamer and voice actor Astreigha doing the voiceover! [Video pans out over a still photo of Astreigha]
If we reach 20,000, Sel, a Tsalagi author and language revival activist, will write a novella set in Sundown. [Video pans out over a book cover. The cover has art of a figure in a red cloak, extending its hands. The cover reads My Name Is Vengeance, Sel Bell]
And if we fund even higher, keep an eye on our stretch goals. See what we dream up, or tell us what you’d like to see. [Video pans over a still image of a character sheet, and a still image of a table with pencils, dice, character sheets, and a consent table in the center of the table]
[Video of L A and James appears again, sitting side by side while facing the camera.]

Risks and challenges
We are a new company, and this is our first product. This is our first time contracting a fulfiller, using a printing service, producing exclusive items like dice, and using BackerKit. These are all things we’re figuring out for the first time.
There’s always the risk that we will have to change printers, suppliers, fulfillers, or pledge managers.
This is a two person outfit. If something happens to one of us, such as illness, injury, or even death, it will cause delays.
Our suppliers and fulfillers have all done this before. They know what they are doing even if we don’t, and our project is almost complete. Sundown just needs art before it’s ready to print.
We have a wide safety net of peers who have run tabletop rpg kickstarter campaigns before, and we have a small but devoted fanbase eager to see us succeed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
