HELP KEEP A MUSICAL HERITAGE ALIVE
For almost forty years, Grant Avenue Studio has been a Canadian institution: recording great artists like U2, Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Los Lobos, Raffi, Prairie Oyster, Johnny Cash, Ani DiFranco, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, The Tea Party, Collective Soul, Chantal Chamberland, Daniel Lanois, Cowboy Junkies, Holly Cole, Pere Ubu and countless others.
We have also worked on projects with great composers like John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Brian Eno, Jon Hassel and Harold Budd. Grant Avenue Studio was the birthplace of ambient music in the early 1980’s.
Through the years, Grant Avenue has always been able to sustain itself. We have done so, by establishing a reputation for quality and a friendly, homey environment. The 'music-making' part of Grant Avenue Studio has never changed. With the adaption to modern recording media, we have never lost our connection to the past.
The studio is still the first choice for composers and artists seeking an oasis from the sterile, digital world of processed music. Our equipment and our instruments are all in excellent working order, but our lovely Edwardian building is over 100 years old. It needs some essential TLC!
Countless Canadian recording studios have been forced to close their doors over the last few years due to changes in the music industry. With the rising cost of overhead and expenses, making music the “old fashioned way” is more than ever a labour of love. We also chose to work with artists we love – rising stars from the indie folk rock, ambient and world music scenes and especially the artists of our vast local music scene. We are also very proud of our track record with Canadian aboriginal musicians.
Our studio rate has remained the same for twenty years now. We do not want to raise our prices!
If we raised our prices, our core group of artists (local composers, singer-songwriters and independent artists) would not be able to afford our studio time. We want to continue to serve the local musicians and artists of this city. While we host friends from around the world, Hamilton is still our talented musical center.
We also have considered the idea of relocation in the past, however, we want to stay on Grant Avenue. So many artists come to Grant Avenue Studio because of the history and heritage contained within it's walls.
Upgrades and renovations are now essential. Without rebuilding the infrastructure of the building, we will not be able to keep our doors open. Without your help, a Canadian institution will come to an end and with it, a chapter in local and national history.
To help us give our wonderful old home a much needed overhaul, we have enlisted the help of our cherished friends; Studio co-founder Daniel Lanois, Canadian legend Gordon Lightfoot, and the producers of the Canadian smash hit documentary “I Dream of Wires”.
The amount of work needed on the building exceeds $100,000.00 however, because kickstarter is "all-or-nothing" funding, we have set our goal at $20,000 which would help really get this project started with a new heating / cooling solution. That issue is in our top priorities.
With your pledges, we can hit our modest target, and we are faithful that will far surpass it! Help us to get a start on our renovation project, and keep the music flowing!
For this campaign, we have the wonderful support of two very important people in the history of Grant Avenue Studio.
Both GORDON LIGHTFOOT and DANIEL LANOIS are key figures in our past and our present. They have been integral in offering some wonderful incentives for folks who pledge toward our cause.
Additionally, the fine folks at the GREENBELT HARVEST PICNIC (coming up on August 29th, 2015) have provided 4 VIP passes for the first four people who pledge for the Gordon Lightfoot evening event.
Please take some time to read through our rewards and incentives.

Risks and challenges
We have finished receiving quotes from the companies that we will use for the issues with our building. They are all local Hamilton companies. The work is estimated at over $100,000.00 however, we have set our goal at $20,000 which would really get us a good start. We hope to raise enough money to complete all that needs to be done, however, we have a list of priorities that we hope to cover. Renovations / repairs will not be complete before any of the events take place. $20,000 would help us with our heating / cooling solution as well as ensure we can fulfill our rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
