Granbyware is our new range of beautiful everyday dinnerware, made from 100% recycled materials

We take crushed glass, old tiles, factory sludge and other waste destined for landfill and we turn it into something amazing - the worlds first 100% recycled ceramic tableware.

We've been endlessly testing materials, developing and refining recipes and we're finally ready to go - but we need your help to put them into production and transform the way we make ceramics!

The Range

We've got everything you need to lay your table. The forms are simple, strong and durable - based on hundreds of hand-thrown prototypes we’ve made, tested and refined.

Each piece is made by us, here in Liverpool. Beautifully crafted, made to be enjoyed everyday. They're all 100% food, dishwasher and microwave safe.

Big plate (27cm)– for those delicious home cooked meals

Small plate (22cm) – for that toasted bagel or a slice of cake

Big bowl (21cm)– pasta, soup, salad this bowl holds it all

Small bowl (16cm)– for snacks or cereal

Mug (9cm x 8cm)– You’ll be sipping tea or coffee like a champ

Available individually, in 3 and 5 pieces sets and in custom combos

Choose your products from the Rewards menu on the right. You can either choose single products, sets or for those who want a bit more customisation – you can also make your own custom set using our A la carte option - hit back this project at the top of the page and pick A la carte and add up the total.

 The Materials

To make this project happen we've voyaged into the deep and murky waters of ceramic chemistry and waste management – analysing the core chemical components of our usual clay and glaze materials, and where we could find substitutes from industrial and consumer waste.

We’re surrounded by all manner of industries here in the North West and only an hour or so from Stoke on Trent - the centre of the UK's ceramics industry.

We've worked closely with specialist waste management companies to identify a range of waste streams that could be harnessed for producing ceramics.

We've considered all manner of sludges, silts, dusts and debris - everything from incinerated sewage waste ash to recycled car battery compounds. We’ve been crushing glass, extracting rust, sieving grit and exploring the extraordinary unseen processes that go on way back behind the scenes in the wonderful world of waste management.

Its a serious matter - in the UK, millions of tonnes of ceramic, glass and stone waste goes to landfill each year.  Each year more is recycled - but the reality is that this is really downcycled – where beautiful but broken tiles end up in backfill beneath a road, not a new tile.

At the same time, we dig up millions of tonnes of raw materials and these too have a big impact. The mining of china clay alone produces 9 tonnes of waste for every 1 tonne of clay that’s extracted.

We’re pretty obsessed with materials, and one of the most magical things that we get to do as makers is transform something worthless into something beautiful and useful.

Thats why we set out to develop our recipe entirely from waste and nothing else - not a single gram of new material, no binders, no additives, strictly waste. Sourced as locally as possible, transformed through our process into a product as beautiful, durable and long-lasting as anything else out there.

The Recipe

After countless tests and trials, we’ve developed a process that allows us to make beautiful, durable ceramic dinnerware from a handful of core waste streams.

Industrial clay waste – Before any water is returned to the mains from a factory producing tableware, toilets or any other ceramic products, it needs to be clean – so all the silty, sludgy, muddy residues are filtered out as waste. These super fine wastewater particles are what binds our clay body together.

Recycled Glass – crushed into a fine powder to form the base of our glaze.

Quarry waste – Dust from slate, granite and marble quarrying. They add varying amounts of calcium, sodium, iron and potassium oxide, which in the right quantities control the melt of our glaze.

Recycled refractory bricks – Broken bricks from demolished kilns and furnaces, ground up into a powder. These give us alumina, which helps stiffen and strengthen the glaze, and Magnesia, which helps the glaze melt and gives a beautiful silky matte surface.

Fired ceramic waste – Broken plates, tiles, bricks, bowls, crushed into fine powders. We use them to reduce shrinkage & glaze defects but also to add a splash of colour.

One of our biggest challenges has been accommodating the varied nature of waste. We've tackled this by having each batch chemically tested using an XRF analysis that shows its mineral composition - then our recipes are then tweaked accordingly for that batch. A dash more of tile, a hint of glass and a sprinkle of quarry waste and we’re pretty much sorted.

Working in this way means we’re adding another stage to the process, as we have to test everything every time. Other manufactures wouldn’t want to work in this way but for us it means we can make something reliable from 100% waste sources. It also means in order for it to be viable we have to work in big batches – and that’s why we’re here on Kickstarter.

Colours + Finish

On one hand, this project is about we can rethink our process to reduce waste and our industry’s environmental impact, but on the other – its about completely transforming how we see these waste materials and exploring what kind of beautiful and surprising surfaces, textures and finishes they can produce.

The typical ceramics supply chain is all about refining materials within an inch of their life, removing any impurities and making something smooth and uniform, which is then decorated in a controlled way. Not us though! This supply chain is the opposite.

We’ve got all sorts of speckles and freckles from the impurities. For example our blue isn’t one flat colour – it’s made from tiny specks of crushed blue tiles of varying shade and colour. Oh it’s deep and complex.

The insides of the pieces have this lovely deep glaze and the exteriors are left raw and unglazed to show off the texture and grain of our recycled clay body. We worked really hard to develop a clay composition that vitrifies when its fired, with water absorption of less than 0.5% so that the outsides can be unglazed and are still completely dishwasher safe.

We've started with 4 great glaze colours - and we're continuing to develop more. We'd love to hear from you about what colours you'd like and we'll see if we can develop them.

100% waste glaze recipes in the pipeline

The more support we get through this campaign, the further we can go developing beautiful new colours & finishes.

You can mix and match your colours for the ultimate dinner set. Don’t worry you don’t have to pick right now. We’ll be collecting responses in the survey so you’ve got plenty of time.

 Scaling up

So, why are we on Kickstarter? Well the process is only really viable at scale. We’ve been carefully mixing up small batches of the clay at the workshop in order to produce all the trials and tests but in order to go into full production and make a consistent product we need to source tonnes and tonnes tonnes of material at a time and get them mixed up off site.

It’s all to do with scaling up and having a real impact. We have multiple waste streams we’re accessing and these all need to be used on mass and mixed consistently to be useable.

Like all industries - ceramics is moving towards incorporating more waste materials and as makers it’s our duty to stay conscious and know where our materials come from. We’ve sourced every material directly, developed and analyzed it’s properties. In order to put Granbyware into production so it has a real impact we need to be producing large batches and this is only possible with your help.

Who We Are

So who are we again? We’re Granby Workshop and we make tiles and tableware in Liverpool.

We make playful, everyday objects designed to be enjoyed, combining experimental craft attitude with manufacturing techniques to develop new materials and products. Our very first products were made using rubble from the houses being renovated in our neighbourhood. Initially making fittings and fixtures that would go back into these homes to be enjoyed by residents.

Our first Kickstarter campaign launched in 2017 – Splatware. It was fully funded and allowed up to to develop our first tableware pieces. Since then we’ve grown the team and are now at a crucial point were we need to further expand the business.

Timeline

We’ve learnt a lot from our previous Kickstarter campaign and one of the big things was setting a realistic timeline. The quality of each piece is paramount and we want to make sure we do it right. We’re also producing 5 new products so we need to account for the set up and production of each one.

10th September – 8th Oct: Kickstarter Campaign

October: Plan for production, finalise moulds

November:  Mix materials and produce production moulds

December: Begin production of mugs (slip cast), plates and bowls (ram press)

January: Production

February: Production

March: Glazing and finishing

April: Packaging and shipping

Thank You

Finally - a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us on the journey so far - especially to Andy Biggs, Dave Salt, Alan Ault, Dave Amison & Mark Cumberlidge who worked so generously with us to develop our recipes,  to everyone in the Granby Four Streets Community Land Trust and Assemble and all those who backed our previous Kickstarter campaign and the ongoing work we do!

Risks and challenges

We’ve learnt a lot from our previous Kickstarter campaign. Ah ceramics it always has a risk to it. We’ve had warping of plates, machines breaking down mid production run and at one point our glaze and clay body decided not to be friends. These things happen and have happened to us but that’s all part of producing something new and different.

So what are we doing to make sure they don’t happen again? Well firstly we’ve grown as a team – I mean physically we’ve doubled in size which means we can work more efficiently plus it’s always good to have more creative minds in the mix. We have a second ram press so if one decides to break – fingers crossed it won’t we have a back up option no more production stalling. Not only that but we’ve learnt the quirks of how a ram press works – what type of mould it likes, how much air needs to be circulated and when and how to adjust it. We’re also producing using multiple methods which means we can make products in parallel rather than one at a time.

The clay body itself has been extensively tested, we’ve gone all out and triple checked that it’s way up to standard and mimics the properties of a traditional clay. Each piece of the range has gone through a laboratory test to make sure it’s durable enough to be used every day and is food and dishwasher safe. We want to make sure that we do it right and are producing a product you’ll have for a long time.

We know that we can make Granbyware we’ve produced a full range of prototypes that have been trialed and tested the challenge will be scaling up production to meet a larger demand. We also need to leave wiggle room for tweaks. We’d rather surprise and delight you with an early delivery than leave you waiting! If the campaign is super successful (fingers crossed) it may mean you have to wait a little bit longer for your products as each item is individually made. We’ll keep you updated if this does happen but worry not as you will get the best product possible.
