This project is to record the short, small-scale "trailer" version of my opera "Flora and the Prince", which premiered at Carnegie Hall, New York, in October 2012. This demo recording will be used to attract funding for the development and production of the full length version, and we need your help.
"Flora and the Prince" re-creates the story of the famous "Skye Boat Song", how Flora MacDonald helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape the British Redcoats after his defeat at Culloden in 1746, her subsequent flight to "the Colonies", and her life in the Carolinas which culminated in her participation in the American War of Independence.
In this recording the role of Flora will be performed by the soaring American soprano Laura Pedersen, who movingly created the role for the New York premiere. Flora's daughter Annie will be South African mezzo Julie Martin-Carter, and Flora's husband Allan will be sung by Icelandic baritone Astmar Olafsson.
The musicians will be the internationally renowned Edinburgh String Quartet, with double bassist Adrian Bornet of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and Scotland-based pianist Anna Orviss. I am simultaneously proud, delighted and humbled that these fine performers had no hesitation in agreeing to be part of this project.
All the money raised by this project will be paid directly to the performers and to the recording studio. Any amount raised over the target sum will be used to assist in the promotion of the recording to grant-giving bodies and potential patrons as we seek to fund the creation of the full-length opera.
There is already strong interest in mounting productions of the full-length "Flora and the Prince" in a number of places in Scotland, Europe, in New York and also further afield in the US, and in Central America.
This recording is the vital first step towards our goal of creating the full-lenth opera, and that can only happen with your generous assistance.
Risks and challenges
This is a free-standing project.
However, the projected end product is essentially a high-powered demo recording, copies of which will only be made available to relevant music industry funding bodies and to sponsors.
This means that once the funding target has been achieved the only potential risks would be the sudden non-availablity during the projected production period of any of the singers, the musicians, or the studio. Should that happen the recording date can be changed - either delayed or brought forward - to accommodate any sudden scheduling problems.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
