A desk that is also a bed! It is perfect for rooms that are not big enough for both a bed and a desk. Read more

About this project
Beds are one of the most used pieces of furniture in the home. Everyone needs a bed. Unfortunately, when they are not in use they take up an inordinate amount of floor space.
Desks are also very useful pieces of furniture, but beds predictably take priority. Without a dedicated work space, the prospect of hauling materials to the kitchen table everyday makes working at home far less appealing. Whether you are a student, an artist, or a telecommuter, having a permanent desk is hugely beneficial.
This is where the UrbanDesk comes in! Set your desk up as you normally would, and leave it set up. This is not a sliver of a desk that barely holds a laptop and book. The UrbanDesk is designed for serious use every day.
I originally set out for this project to be a one off that I would use while living in my current apartment. After a few months of use and admiration from friends and family, I felt the UrbanDesk could serve a greater need. Currently, I do not have the ability to fund any further development and refinement of this product so I decided to turn to Kickstarter.
What exactly is the UrbanDesk?
The UrbanDesk is a bed frame with an attached desk. The bed pivots against the wall and in doing so raises the desk surface up from the floor.
How big is the UrbanDesk?
The bed frame supports an American Full (sometimes called a Double) mattress.
The desk surface is 59" W x 29.5" D
When in "Bed Mode" the dimensions are approximately:
24.5" H x 78.5" W x 57.5" D
In "Desk Mode" the dimensions are approximately:
78" H x 78.5" W x 42" D
The UrbanDesk will include printed instructions similar to most flat-pack furniture. Video instruction will also be available online.
Assembly will consist of bolting the separate pieces together. The UrbanDesk can be assembled within its own footprint and will be easily finished in one afternoon.
The mattress will be attached to the bed frame with nylon webbing which is included.
Due to popular demand, I have added a reward of the DIY plans to build the wood version of the UrbanDesk which is featured in the video.
This reward will include printed and pdf format construction plans and drilling templates.
These kits are designed for constructing the wood version of the UrbanDesk and take the headaches out of ordering all the different parts and working with the steel components. The following items will be included in the kits:
- Construction Plans
- Gas Springs
- Steel components of lifting mechanism
- Locking and release mechanism
- Nuts and bolts to hold everything together
What will change from the prototype to the production model?
The production model will be functionally identical to the prototype that I have been using every day since July. All of the structural wood pieces will be replaced with steel, and there will be a locking mechanism.
- October - Launch Kickstarter campaign.
- October through mid November - Finalize design and prepare for production by finding warehouse space and coordinating production partners.
- Mid November through January - Use Kickstarter funds to build and test pre-production steel model.
- January - Begin production.
- February - Write and test assembly instructions.
- April - Deliver first 5 UrbanDesks.
- May - Begin shipping production UrbanDesks.
The UrbanDesk will be produced in the United States. Because of its size and weight, international shipping will be expensive. If you would like to receive an UrbanDesk as a reward and do not live in the United States, please contact me before backing this project and I will let you know how much to add for shipping.
Risks and challenges
There are a few common Kickstarter risks which I have read about and I have set out to avoid them in the following ways:
I have decided not to offer any rewards besides UrbanDesks and thank you cards. While it would be nice to offer T-Shirts or mugs to backers, it is clear that these rewards take up a lot of time and money that would otherwise be used on the main project.
If this project is funded, it will be my full time occupation until the final UrbanDesk is shipped and delivered. This is NOT a side project.
I am committed to producing the UrbanDesk in the most affordable manner possible, but I am very conscious of the fact that I do not know exactly what the final build cost will be. My current prototype came in very close to my original cost estimate and I am confident the final product will as well. I have set my target funding goal to a level which will allow me to focus on this project with all of the necessary resources, and I confidently believe that I will be able to provide UrbanDesks at each of the reward levels within the prescribed time frame.
I am committed to keeping everyone up to date on the progress of this project and I will be posting regular updates throughout the course of production.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
