About this project
The First Year and a Half of My Musical Life Brought Many Milestones
My debut album, Grace Pettis, was made at Blue Rock Studio in Wimberley, TX and produced by Billy Crockett. That record earned some glowing reviews from Maverick Magazine (4 stars) and others. Entering songs from the record helped me win the 2009 NPR Mountain Stage NewSong songwriting contest. One of my songs, "Nine to Five Girl," also won "Best Song" in that contest. I also won the 2010 Wildflower songwriting contest, and its grand prize, a handmade Gallagher guitar, which I now play in every show.
Two of the songs from my first record have been covered by other artists, even though I don't yet have a publisher pitching them. Sara Hickman, the 2010 State Musician of Texas, covered "Love is There" on her 2010 CD, "Absence of Blame." Welsh singer-songwriter and winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, David Llewellyn, has recently covered "Dancing" on his newest release, which will be available soon.
"Love is There" became a theme in promotional materials for the 2010 StoryvilleLIVE Tour, a partnership between Storyville Coffee and the International Justice Mission. Their profits went directly to free slaves around the world.
I'm very proud of the first record and the encouragement that came from it.
Because of my first record, I am now a full-time touring artist. I am able to sell CDs at my shows, and that helps me pay for gas, to keep me on the road. But in the two years since Billy and I made the first record, I've written a lot of new songs. These new songs, which will be on my sophomore album, have already been winning contests—the 2011 Kerrville New Folk contest, and the 2011 Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist Showcase—and getting attention in general.
I believe the reason my first collection of songs was critically acclaimed was that the quality of the record far surpassed its budget. This was due to the generosity and sacrifice of many musicians, artists, the studio, Billy, and others. They gave of themselves to get me started. I've been blessed with a community of talented, hardworking creative professionals who all make their living in their respective fields. With a year of touring under my belt, I am now a more seasoned professional, too. It's appropriate for me to compensate the other artists with whom I work.
I Have Big Dreams For My Second Album
Everyone involved believes that this will help launch me to a new level. More than accolades, it will help me in my goal of building a team with management, publishing, and possibly a label. At the very least, the project will help me continue to write and perform, and to make a living doing it. I have the songs, the studio, the producer, and some of the finest musicians committed to be part of this project. The stars have aligned for me in so many ways. I’m asking you to be a part of the constellation.
To make a project that will move me forward in my goals, a project that has integrity and endurance, I will need to raise $21,600. To be clear, $21,600 is how much I need just to make my album (and includes Kickstarter's percentage).
This is a bare-bones figure, with no cushion for anything other than paying the bills. Even though it’s a large number- $21,600 is actually an incredibly conservative budget for the kind of record I’m making. I’ll be getting much more than my money’s worth, and so will everyone who gets the finished product.
I really need more than that - around $40,000 - if I want to have a budget for promotion. So, I’m relying on your generosity. The $21,600 goal doesn't allow for any kind of promotion.
As you know, there’s a risk with Kickstarter: I only have 41 days to raise the money. At the end of that time, if I don't reach my goal, I won't get a single cent, and I’ll have to delay the recording of my second record.
My record will only be made if this community of people that supports me decides to help.
I’ll be keeping you guys updated on our progress with blog entries and video, and a page on my website with all the latest news. You can also check in on facebook and twitter, or by subscribing to my monthly email blasts (signup form is on my website: www.gracepettis.com).
Thank you, in advance for making this happen- I couldn’t do it without you.
