With GPCats you can track the location of your loved one no matter how far it roams. GPCats is the world's first affordable cats-only tracking collar designed by a veterinarian to help reduce the insanely high number of cats that get lost every day.
Update: Please check the new rewards that we have just added for our backers! For just a slightly higher pledge, we threw in a t-shirt, a cool mug and a stainless steel cat food bowl in the shape of a fish, which cat won't love that?
What is GPCats?
GPCats is a lightweight collar that instantly allows you to see where your cat is, on your mobile phone or using a web browser. It contains navigation and communication technology and it can be easily fitted to a cat's neck. It works out of the box with no activation or subscription necessary.
This small device has been designed by a veterinarian to attach gently around the cat's neck. Its safety clip releases the collar if the cat gets stuck (and because it's a tracking collar, you'll know the place where it's been dropped!).
It is comfortable even for small cats, and the battery lasts for 5 days or more in energy saving mode. It comes with a charging cable (and can be charged with a standard Micro USB cable), and the integrated SIM chip tracking service is free of charge for all Kickstarter backers!
Every day thousands of pets disappear worldwide, and an awful lot of them are never retrieved. To many people cats are like family members and losing them is a great tragedy.
Veterinarian Dr Michael Streicher, one of the creators behind GPCats, has to deal with people who look for their cats every day. He thought of a way to make the lives of cats safer and give their owners some peace of mind.
Michael was joined by some other people, all experienced in their fields, and together we began to design a new product to help cat owners find their cats when they go missing.
Checking the current options on the market, it became clear that there is no device around that we feel suitable for conveniently tracking cats. They were either difficult to use, or not really suitable for smaller cats, or very expensive. We planned to create a device that would be different. After more than one year of planning and design, we created GPCats.
How does GPCats work?
GPCats operates using a rechargeable battery. It uses the signal of GPS satellites to determine the cat's position and then connects with the mobile phone network to transmit the position to a server.
Using your phone, tablet, or PC, you can then see your cat's last known position on a map. The software offers different modes changing the update frequency of the position. The lower the frequency, the longer the battery will last. Considering that GPCats is meant to be a device for emergencies, remember that even a position a few hours old will give you a pretty good idea of where to look for your cat, and switching the device to a live update mode will help you track it down.
What's the difference to having your cat "chipped"?
If you got your cat chipped (it has got an identification code implanted) and it gets lost, a veterinarian will be able to scan the chip on the cat to find your address in a database. But if nobody finds your cat, nobody can read its chip. And not even all animal shelters will scan a cat brought to them! But if you have a device like GPCats, you can always check where your cat is and don't need to hope for someone to find it and bring it to an institution.
The GPCats App
We are aware that the app needs to be easy to use - and to just do what you want it to: Show you the position of your cat. When first started, all you need to do is to enter the code that is printed on the collar. You will now see the last position that the collar sent to the server. You can now communicate with the collar through the app. Some of the most important features of the app:
- Display battery life (transmitted by the collar)
- Different modes for immediate ("live") tracking as well as a "stamina" mode that transmits the position in longer intervals to extend battery life
- Link two collars to one account (so you can exchange them and charge one while the cat is away with the other)
- Display the position of several cats (in case you have more than one cat or want to share your cat's position with another cat owner)
- Set a password to protect the collar
- Turn off the device (it is turned on by plugging it into the charger.)
- The app works on iOS, Android and with your browser on PC/Mac/Linux.
Talking with animal shelters, we learned that many of them would benefit from owning GPCats collars. Many allow their cats to leave the premises and roam free, so they would benefit from GPCats, however many of these shelters are on a tight budget. So we came up with the following concept. For every 10 collars that are requested through Kickstarter, we will donate a collar to an animal shelter! We want to support those in need. So please spread the word so that GPCats becomes a success and there are a lot of collars that we can give to animal shelters worldwide.
At the end of the campaign you will help us decide which animal shelters get a new GPCats collar. You support and contribution can go a long way!
We've been working on GPCats for over a year, starting with a prototype the size of an A4 page and then creating an 8x8 cm test board to work with the near-final components, and finally arriving at a tiny 27x27 mm board that contains, well, everything apart from the battery.
We've done a lot of field tests and we're still optimizing the hardware components, the case and collar and the app. With your help, we will now be able to take the final step and produce the first actual batch of collars.
We're a small international team with many years of experience in our respective fields of business. These people form the core of our venture.
- Shawn's job is to make sure that the product gets finished and reaches a global market so everyone can get this product and never lose their cats.
- Michael has dedicated his life to curing cats. He knows what they need and how to best help them. His ideas form the core of the GPCats project.
- With Jan's experience in software design, production and marketing, he can offer valuable advice in the steps necessary for creating a professional product.
- We are supported by two hardware designers and a case manufacturer in Germany, and we have secured an extremely competitive international mobile service provider to keep data costs low.
We want you to take a part in our campaign. Right now we are planning to release the first edition with a black color. But with your feedback we want to find out if there is a different color that you prefer. Finally we will settle on the color that we got most positive feedback for, so please tell us what you think. Here are our suggestions: Black, White, Grey, Pink, and Ruby.
If we exceed our funding goal because you guys gave us your pledge (and want to own the GPCats collar!), we will increase the package that we're offering. So help us make this even bigger and see how we will extend GPCats!
Please stay tuned for more rewards as we react to your achievements!
We're adding more and more territories to our service. Many countries even have several mobile service providers available for us to guarantee a better service and wider coverage. Right now GPCats works in the following territories: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jersey, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States.

What we're doing with the funding
We have already invested a lot of time and resources into GPCats. Our team has created the design, the technology, the case and the apps to use it, and we're continuously working with our cats and their owners to further improve comfort, accuracy and longevity of the collar.
The money from Kickstarter will help us to get the first batch of units shipped, and if you have pledged for a reward including a collar, you will be the first to receive them.
Creating an actual production line to bring the product to market is not easy, but with your help we will be able to do it. And if you help us exceed our funding goal, there is more that you can get, see the Stretch Goals!
We're no big fans of followup costs. Because GPCats uses the cell phone network to transmit data, there are monthly fees that phone providers want from us. But here is a very special reward for you backers: We'll cover any service fees so you don't need to pay anything extra, ever. (This only applies to backers through Kickstarter, so you need to pledge for a collar reward before the campaign ends!)
You just need to pledge for a device through one of the backer reward options. And your lifetime service is included.

Wir freuen uns, wenn Sie es möglich machen, dass GPCats schon bald das Licht der Welt erblickt... und Sie zu den ersten gehören, die es besitzen!
Risks and challenges
Creating a product from start to finish is always a big challenge. We have created hardware prototypes, we've written the software, we've done field tests. But delivering a finished product for the customer is always another matter. We are happy to tell you that we have been working in the field of product development since 1997 already. Team members have produced and shipped more than 20 software products, being responsible for project management, customer relations, schedules and financial plans. Not a single peoject they have been working on so far has failed delivery.
GPCats is being developed in Germany. Design for hard & software is done there. Engineering as well, with advice coming from experienced experts in the fields of hardware and case design. Production will then take place im China. We are already working with Chinese manufacturers and resellers.
If you want us to address additional risks, please don't hesitate to ask for your reassurance.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
