Within: A magazine about leadership for women in design/tech
Design and technology are shaping our lives and our world at an accelerating rate.
Women are grossly underrepresented in tech leadership and more than twice as likely to quit than men. Even when women are in leadership, the message we receive is: fit in. Be loud, authoritative, confrontational. (But not too anything.)
Our community is committed to designing new models for leadership inspired by the ways women naturally lead.
Within will be a bi-annual magazine about our experiences—in all of their complexity—as womxn in leadership. Like our in-person events, the content will be a mix of reflecting on our experiences, inspiring creativity in the ways we lead, learning from each other, and imagining a world run by women. The community and conversation around this content will not only open our minds to new models of leadership, but also embolden women to lead from a more authentic place.
Each issue will explore a tension we experience as leaders, such as rational/intuitive, authority/influence, or structure/freedom. Our inaugural issue will begin with the broadest theme of feminine-masculine.
In no way do we think we have the answer to leadership, or that there is an “answer.” However, our core community is made up of designers and technologists who are by nature collaborative problem solvers. Building from this community, we aim to call our assumptions into question, look at leadership from many angles, and inspire new ways forward.
Within represents all women/womxn and non-binary people. We do not believe masculine leadership is bad, and feminine leadership is good. We do believe that in order to thrive, society needs the full spectrum of what humans have to offer regardless of gender, race, class, sexuality, religion, or nation.
Good question. We decided on Kickstarter for a few reasons. We’re not only producing our first magazine, we are getting ramped up as a (hopefully ongoing) project. When we launched our first retreat, we received more interest than we can support at in-person events. That’s how the idea of a magazine was born, and we hope to bring everyone who is interested into this community and conversation.
Producing a magazine is surprisingly expensive, even if you don’t pay contributors. We want to pay all the amazing women (and possibly men) who share their creativity and experiences with our community! So, yes we need your financial support. We also need your participation in our community. This combination will give us evidence that you share our desire to explore new models of leadership inspired by the ways women naturally lead.
A massive thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of our campaign. We hope this early momentum is a sign Within has life beyond our first issue. The print magazine business is a hard one, but we believe in the power of committing words to paper. We also believe in the power of design and storytelling, and would love to go the extra mile with all of you.
We created some stretch goals to breathe even more life into Within:
Mia Blume, Founder + Creative Director
Mia is a renaissance woman who moves fluidly between designing and coaching. She brings these worlds together to craft experiences that inspire and support women in leading from an authentic, empathetic and intuitive place. A former design leader at Pinterest, Square, and IDEO, Mia has seen it all.
Ashlea Sommer, Executive Editor
Ashlea plays at the intersection of language and movement. A design director, leadership coach, and yoga instructor, she sees stories as keys for unlocking who we are and who we can become, as individuals and a collective of women. Ashlea grew up at IDEO, and has worked with clients on all points of the creative leadership spectrum.
Saphierrina Sutherland, Lead Designer
Saphierrina (saph-ah-ri-na) is passionate about designing purpose-driven brands across industries and mediums. She is a wizard at making the simple beautiful, and turning everyday objects into covetable experiences. She once brought her magic to Square, and now brings it to Eero.
Natasha Lo, Chief Wrangler
Natasha makes things happen before anyone else realizes what needs to happen. She’s a magician of sorts, working happily behind the scenes so that all of Within’s dreams go off without a hitch. In her previous life, she made many things at Airbnb happen.
Within Community (You!)
We won’t name you all here but our community is strong (and growing!) and we can’t imagine doing this without you. Writers, researchers, illustrators, photographers, emerging leaders, veterans...

Risks and challenges
This is not our first creative adventure together, but it is our first magazine. As is always true in life, we don’t know what we don’t know. We do know that we are a determined bunch who believes wholeheartedly in our mission. Some risks and challenges we foresee might be that we don’t get the volume or quality of submissions we are hoping for (unlikely, right ladies?), or that we run into production issues (also unlikely...we produced a just-in-time mini-magazine for our inaugural retreat). Beyond that we are feeling good.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
