Your Personal Place in Space
Have you ever wondered what our solar system looked like at the time of your birth? With this project you can get your own personal Solar System as an Art Print set to a particular date such as a birthdate, wedding or any other date meaningful to you.
Your STC Art Print will be the most precise and accurate depiction of the Solar System commemorating the personal date of your choosing.
We rely on the same data that is used by NASA to predict eclipses or to compute spacecraft trajectories. And our Orrery is so accurate, it has been featured by OpenNASA!
This is not only a piece of art & science, it's also an award winning piece! The original print won the 2016 Golden A' Design Award.
So, What's New?
Well, colors! We used the JPL/Caltech generated planetary maps to set the colors just right. And having colors means we can create legends, but this is optional if you rather have the solar system only. We also added the Moon into the design as it is the second most important object in the sky after the Sun. Finding the Moon's position adds a layer of difficulty as it requires very complex computations in order to ensure accuracy.
As for the prints themselves, along with the the original Matte thick archival and acid-free paper (10.3 mil - 192 gsm) , we now offer a Luster Paper option which is slightly glossy and has highly saturated colors (10 mil - 240 gsm). It's also fingerprint resistant. Read more about the paper differences.
Our main printer is in the USA and will ship from them. We do have a EU printer we will use for our EU backers, but they only can print in Matte paper for now. We hope they'll be able to offer a Luster option soon, so our EU backers won't have to pay a potential Customs fee. But for now, all our Luster Prints will be fulfilled in and shipped from the USA.
One more thing, there is now a super small size: 8 x 10 in / 20 x 25.5 cm.
We believe our designs are the best on the market because we have combined scientific data with an artistic dimension to make beautiful yet accurate renderings. We use the latest NASA data and algorithms to compute precisely the positions of the planets and dwarf planets, as well as their orbital paths. We have tested our output extensively against results available on JPL's systems because we strive for the best quality and accuracy.
We then process the numbers in a 3d projection to generate a depiction of the Solar System that is unique to the date you requested. No two different dates produce the same design, that's why SpaceTime Coordinates products are so distinctive and personal. We generate the graphics uniquely and carefully for each order we receive to make sure that your STC print represents *your* personal place in space.
The Contextualisation of a Specific Human Life in the Bigger Picture of the Universe
With this project we can relate to the Solar System itself and find our own place in the universe. We might all just be space dust in the big picture, but we should grasp our own individual humanity and celebrate our ephemeral time on earth.
The four dimensions (x, y, z, and t) are used to represent a particular location in time and space, known as the 4th dimension. The orbital paths are illustrated by gradient lines, illustrating the counterclockwise direction of all the planets. The distances between the planets are schematised in order to make all the orbits and objects visible at such scale.
Projects of Earth / Voyager 40th Anniversary
We are proud to be part of the Projects of Earth initiative as we've decided to celebrate Voyager 40th Anniversary by launching our campaign on this very special day, because our project celebrates science, history, design and human achievements.
Just as life on the Earth is ever changing, so is our place in the Solar System, and this is what we want to showcase.
It took thousands of years for humans to understand and be able to describe the movements of the planets and other celestial bodies. Observing our sky and the planets in it, has deeply influenced Mankind in many ways. It gave us mathematics, made it possible for us to orient ourselves when exploring unknown territories, enabled us to keep track of time. Its’ influence on religion, language and countless other fields cannot be overstated.
How we compute the positions of the planets today is a testament to all the scientists, philosophers, mathematicians, inventors, who came before us. In short, the study of our Solar system is one of the differentiating factors between Mankind and the Animal Kingdom.
There is something reassuring in the movement of the celestial bodies and in the predictability of their trajectories. The celestial clock keeps on ticking with regularity, no matter what happens in our lives. It was there before us and will be there long after we are gone. Still, there is a special spot in the space-time configuration that is unique to each and everyone one of us.
There are countless events in our lives, or in history that are worth remembering and celebrating. On any given date, the Solar System was organized in a singularly unique way – differently than any other day in history. Our mission is to provide you with the actual snapshot of the Solar System that corresponds to your most special day.

Risks and challenges
The estimated shipping is only that: an estimation, as each print is custom made, it is difficult to have a precise shipping date estimate.
Please be aware that the shipping estimate may change due to high demand. But we promise to keep you in the loop during the entire fulfilment process.
About potential Customs fee when receiving your reward, we have a printer in USA and EU for our Matte prints, so if you're based in the EU you won't pay any customs. But for our Luster prints, at the moment only our US printer can handle them, so if you are outside the USA, customs might apply and there is nothing we can do to prevent that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
