À propos du projet
Who are we? What are we all about?
Got a Girl Crush is a blog and a magazine about women, by women for everyone. We feature the badass accomplishments of women in hopes to inspire others to do the same.
We disrupt the broken narrative of most women's publications and tell stories of all ages, races, and backgrounds of women all over the world. We believe that print is not dead and that there is value to having a tangible medium to read, digest, and share--rather than sharing a link online that is easily forgotten tomorrow.
Living somewhere between a magazine and coffee table book, rather than something disposable, Got a Girl Crush is something to keep and re-visit.
We’ve been a blog since 2009, self-published 5 magazines and have interviewed hundreds of women from all over the world. In addition to the blog and magazine, we want to connect beyond the page and screen by hosting events and pop-ups to bring our audience together and build community.
Why are we raising money through Kickstarter?
At its current stage, the magazine is an annual independent publication featuring beautiful intriguing work by artists and interviews with women. We are an army of two friends who devote all our free time to continuing to give a platform to women to share their stories and accomplishments. We met working as photo retouchers and have both worked in the industry for nearly a decade. After having constant moral issues with contributing to unrealistic body image/standards for women in media, we’ve decided to leave behind what we don’t believe in and invest in the future of women in media--and we need your help!
Our fifth issue was the fastest-selling issue to-date, and with every issue our readership grows. Currently we have no advertising and are self-sustaining by sales of the magazine and other ephemera that we sell.
Why we need funding:
- We want to compensate those making the magazine what it is for all their hard work! We are now paying all of our contributors (both online and in print)--whereas before everyone donated 100% of their times and talents to the cause.
- In addition to the magazine, we are constantly creating new content on our website, putting on events and want to help #ladiesgetpaid! We want to stop perpetuating the notion that indie publications can't compensate. We want to create high quality content with more frequency. We want to hire more artists, more writers, but to do that we need a bigger production budget.
- We are asking our readers to invest in the future of the magazine before we consider partnering or being sponsored by large entities we believe in, in order to maintain our voice.
- We need funding to scale the size of the magazine. This involves larger runs (our last issue was only 1,000 copies and now we've moved up to 2,000), considering a bi-annual format, paying distributors, and hiring someone that is skilled at marketing to a wider audience because we truly stand behind that although this is a woman-owned, run, designed, published, distributed magazine--it is for everyone.

Risques et défis
We were able to pay all contributors, artists, and transcribers this issue! This was a really huge step and was something that was really important to us to be able to finally achieve on our own (without any advertising or sponsorship) -- because we believe women deserved to be compensated for their time and talent! We also ordered our largest run to-date of 2,000 copies. Subsequently that was all the money in our coffers and we are turning the community that has supported us along the way to help us grow before we consider working with advertisers or sponsors.P
